Sony shuts down Bluepoint Studios

Well we are 6/7 years into ps5 lifespam ... can you show a better playstation remake than Demos Souls this whole gen ?

People are talking like Demon souls quality remakes are popping out like crazy and is very easily done.

"Well sony can divert to china or use ai or whatever" well sure... where's the proof ? Where's the remake that shows they dont need Bluepoint anymore because anyone can do it ?

Yeah.. im not buying it ... for me they just didnt care about bluepoint because their gaas strategy dosent accommodates this type of business anymore, its not were the money is, so pull the plug and fuck quality single player remakes.

Sure God of War if done correctly by Santa Monica will probably be good, but thats it, you can forget about bloodborne and other legacy games not already attached to current studios being done.

Theres no alternative universe were you shitcan bluepoint while at the same time thinking "well who can do this awsome bloodborne remake?"
Doesn't matter how good they are if the other studios are not willing to let them remake their old games .

I hope the team starts again under a different name. Bluepoint is too valuable to this industry to be discharded like this.

Sony continues to be....just so fucking awful.

  • Lead story: Sony is reportedly shutting down Bluepoint Games (about 70 jobs impacted), with the studio said to be closing in March after a "recent business review."
  • Why people are furious: Bluepoint's track record (e.g., Shadow of the Colossus remake, Demon's Souls remake) makes this feel like burning elite talent instead of redeploying it.
  • Core rant energy (DF-style):
    • "This is one of the worst decisions Sony's made in years."
    • "If Bluepoint isn't safe, who is?"
    • The blame gets aimed squarely at upper management strategy and the GaaS obsession.
  • The ugly chain of events as framed in the discussion:
    • Bluepoint was put on (or chose to pursue) a live-service God of War–related project.
    • Sony's live-service pullback/cancellations left Bluepoint without a shipped title under PlayStation Studios, then the studio reportedly spent time pitching new projects.
  • "This didn't have to happen" bucket (missed layups):
    • Print-money work: high-end remakes/remasters/legacy collections/modernization passes.
    • PC ports / PS5 upgrades for older catalog titles (the "Sony back catalog is insane, why is it still trapped?" argument).
    • Support + tech integration: Bluepoint's tooling/engine expertise could've boosted other internal teams instead of being deleted.
  • Bigger fear: this reads like a symptom of an industry-wide pattern:
    • "No one's safe" vibes for other first-party teams that haven't shipped this gen.
    • The conversation pivots to the broader rot: chasing the next forever-game ("beat Roblox/Fortnite") and treating anything less as failure.
  • Counterpoint raised in the discussion:
    • Bluepoint likely wanted to break out of being "the remake studio," and the live-service pitch may have been part of that.
    • Even if that gamble failed, closure shouldn't be the default punishment for one wrong strategic bet—especially for a ~70-person team.
  • The quote that makes it sting more: Sony's spokesperson statement is basically "they're amazing… anyway we're closing them."
  • NeoGAF debate prompt (copy/paste ready):
    • If Bluepoint is gone, who fills the "premium remake/remaster" role at Sony now?
    • Was this inevitable once they pivoted to live service, or pure mismanagement?
    • What's the smarter play in 2026: fewer mega-budget bets, or a return to mid-tier, faster-turnaround prestige projects that keep talent intact?

A YouTuber and industry analysis bellularnews made a great video explaining why Sony shutdown Bluepoint and explained that Sony statement about shutting down the studio is nothing but bullshit

Sony shut them down because they no longer fit playstation plans , and not only that but they could have sold them easily to another publisher but decided not to do so , so one can have access to their talent and technology and compete with playstation.

Super late to the party, but obviously this really blows. I was a big fan of Bluepoint and thought their remakes and remasters were excellent. I just played through the PS4 port of Flower, one of the earlier works of thatgamecompany, and was not surprised to see Bluepoint handled that port. Goes to show you how far back they've been working together. I just think Bluepoint was done dirty.

But anyway, I also wonder if Sony could have possibly seen them as redundant or replaceable with Nixxes, and didn't see the need to keep them both. I know Nixxes have largely been doing PC ports, but I believe they also primarily handled the PS5 version of Horizon 1 Remastered, which from what I hear was a very good looking remaster. Maybe Nixxes starts doing what Bluepoint did and starts doing more projects on the console side of things in Bluepoint's absence.

Bluepoint Games' doors are closed. Five years after Sony stepped through them to welcome the developer's staff into the warm embrace of the PlayStation Studios family, they have been locked for good. Without releasing a single game, another acquisition has been swallowed by the void that modern PlayStation is increasingly transforming into.

Obviously we're not getting it now but always kinda wondered if they would have considered doing the cut snow world from Demons Souls as DLC for the Remake.

Even ND felt some heat when they had to prepare internal demo for Sony few months ago. And Intergalactic has surprisingly
(for ND) high chance of becoming a flop. Looking at initial reaction it's close to Highguard and DAV territory...

And comapre that to Yotei or Wolverine:

When even mighty ND is not fully safe, what about anyone else? Housemarque is making super niche game again, I doubt it will sell well.
Naughty dog is totally safe, my dude.

If Intergalactic flops, they will at least lose their high status among Sony studios.

Nah. They still probably boast their smelling farts over LoU. I bet they feel like they are above anyone in there, hence why they had to rush to make a bloody internal demo.

Now that can happen. But I don't think Intergalactic will flop in any way. May not be the generation defining game they want in sales but it will do well. It might scratch their reputation tho.

The main thing Intergalactic has going for it is the rushed timeline. They won't get to milk it for 8 years and there will be a decent shot at recouping at least. Naughty Dog inertia alone will probably get them to par. Unless it's just atrocious somehow. I still think that original trailer was made before they even had a fleshed out idea for what the gameplay would be. If they're smart, they'll just make it a simple, but very good linear action game to get the easy W. It's already on shakey ground, trying to get cute could fuck them up. Druck would have to set aside the ego and idea of "it's bigger than games".

Bluepoint would be best served trying to do the Nightdive thing if they wanted to carry on somehow. Anytime they tried to bring their own flavor it was a disaster, but they're very technically competent. Could have a nice cottage industry remaking old classics. Singularity; who says no? Wolfenstein 2009 type stuff.

EA could pick them up and get them cranking on Allied Assault.

Cuckman is too far into his own ass to act or think differently.... you can be sure the "cute" is coming, hard.

I'm curious about the master agreement that Bluepoint and other studios sign with Playstation to where they can suddenly get dissolved if they're shutdown.

If you came in the merge independently then have a clause inserted to return to the former if things don't work out. It would be more of exclusive rights to your studio under 1st party terms until termination ensues. Forget merging.
