Nvidia Launches GTX 980 And GTX 970 "Maxwell" Graphics Cards ($549 & $329)

The only available card right now is the EVGA 970 ACX. I know I should stay away from it but for the other ones I'll have to wait 2 weeks...
what should I do GAF???

YES, My second 980 is here! I can finally run Minesweeper in 4K.

I see that you have an Rog Swift. How's the experience with just one 970 with G-Sync? I'm incredibly sensitive to variable framerate and my plan is to buy the 8GB version once it comes out, then maybe buy a used one later down the line for Sli.

A single 980 is great with the ROG Swift and probably enough for most to be honest. It plays everything max at 2560x1440 perfectly smooth. Games such as Assassin's Creed 4, Watch Dogs, and Dead Rising 3 are a HUGE improvement with GSync. They go from erratic stuttery/tearing messes to smooth as silk. It is really hard for me to go back once I've experienced it.

The second 980 will let me crank up AA and down sample most games.

I'm sorry I wrote 970 instead of 980. Sounds too good to be true, I'll move next Tuesday to England and I hope I can get my hands on a 980 and Rog Swift as soon as possible. I hope they'll be in stock although I haven't heard any people in the UK complain about stock shortages like in the US. I really don't know if I should wait for the 8GB version though, if the 970 is around 350 pounds I'll definitely grab one. What price are they expected to retail at?

If you're still looking for 970s and 980s just follow these links for stock tracking.

Does anybody know if any mainstream stores like Best Buy, Office Depot or even fucking Walmart carry high end cards like these?
Best Buy and Futureshop (same parent corp.) in Canada are carrying the vanilla Zotac 970 for the best price.. when it's in stock that is.

I'm considering canceling my pre-order for 2xGigabyte G1 970s (still not restocked) for the regular Gigabyte 970s. Thoughts?

Don't do it. If you ordered from Amazon, they are getting G1 970s and 980s this week.

Practicing some patience now will lead you to be much happier in the long run.

I just talked to Amazon and they said that they won't have them in stock until at least a month from now... (November 10). I also received an update on my 970, this is in the US. I was thinking of getting a sub $100 gpu to hold me over until my card ships. It's going to be a looong month.

Edit: actually this is for zotac... I think amazon should get gigabyte cards soon enough.

Scared me for a bit :D

I just got a delivery status mail for my G1 for next week.

Am I wrong in thinking that gpu oc's reset after a reboot? Do I need to keep a program like MSI afterburner on startup in order to keep the changes?

Yes. Unless you have a program like Afterburner running or permanently flash the overclock to the GPU BIOS, it will reset upon reboot.

I have my Afterburner to launch at startup minimized. Remember to also check the box that says "Apply overclocking at system startup" under Profile.

Playing around with my two zotac amp omega 970s yesterday......... DSR is pretty cool. Makes Mass Effect 2 look pretty freaking good at 5120x3200 at constant 60 fps with 2x AA added on.

threw +200 on the cards, they hold steady at 1485mhz when being worked hard.....temps stay below 70.

Love it so far.

Hrmm....

EVGA SSC ACX2.0 GTX970 for $350 CAD? Seems extremely tempting, especially given the free backplate offer.

However.... Coil whine. Lazy cooling design (only the FTW2.0 has different design, or so I heard). And loud fans (which don't bother me all that much).

Hrm....

Wow, trying to find one of these is a huge challenge. I think I'll just wait for the EVGA or Gigabyte version to come back in stock on Amazon.

What's the difference between the normal 970 and G1 970?

Just installed my MSI 970 and I couldn't be happier.

Also apparently Firestrike turned out to be more than just a cool slideshow lol:

Man am I glad I snagged mine when I did. From my local Microcenter:

Same with the 980s. I just hope it's not the buttcoiners hogging these up again.

Ah. Well after playing with my ASUS STRIX 970 for a few days, I've been very happy with it. Except I just got the dreaded coil "buzz". This was definitely not a whine, it was a buzz. But it is pretty quiet with my case closed and so far has only happened on a single game - FFXIII when I'm downsampling with Durante's GeDeSaTo. It doesn't happen in all scenes, only certain areas and I can hear the pitch of the buzz change as I look around. Pretty crazy.

But overall I'm not going to sweat it. So far it's only that game, doesn't happen anywhere else and it's quiet enough that I don't think it'll bother me in normal gameplay.

You won't find an nvidia card without it anyway.

Yeah. Honestly its so subtle with my case closed that I suspect the only reason I even heard it was because the card is so silent. The fans weren't running or anything. If I open my case and put my ear in there I can definitely hear it. But only in certain conditions.

Further testing I've only found it happening on one map so far in final fantasy xiii. Hasn't happened in any other games or other sections. I'll call it a win and move on.

Yeah, it's a buzz at lower frames, turns into a whine at higher frames from my experience.

Final Fantasy XIII seemed to cause it on mine as well. Though I'm not really sure why, it wasn't exactly taxing the card that much. Seemed to be a weird outlier, other times it had been either a game using 90%+ of the card or super high framerates.

Yeah. I haven't experienced any whines yet. Just the buzz from FFXIII. Highest frames I've seen so far though are 140 or so for CS:GO

Anyone here running 980 SLI? I just installed my second card and got a nice boost in Valley, but the 3DMark score seems really low?

I was getting 15,700 GPU score with a single 980. How the hell has it only increased 1500 points with a second card?

I decided to give amazon another call and it seems like my zotac 970 won't be shipping until November... so I decided to buy an r9 270 for $70 from eBay. I was gonna wait for a but I can't go on for a month without playing my video games. Newegg had some in stock earlier this week but sold out fast. Yet I prefer Amazon for the two day shipping and return policy, so gonna stick with Amazon.

Well it's team Red for now...

Did you try the DDU uninstall method for display drivers? I think it was posted earlier and it solved that person's SLI 3DMark score issue.

It's quite an impressive victory. That would be quite a turn of events if several future games perform better for AMD after all the GTX 970 hype..

Dead Rising 3 also performed relatively better on AMD at launch as it didn't have any crash issues unlike Nvidia cards. So straight up next gen console ports performing better on AMD cards due to console's having AMD hardware? IDK.

Just tried it. Didn't do a think for me. Still scoring around 17K GPU. :(

Nice!

That's what I was expecting. 25-30K GPU. From what I've read elsewhere, it might be a problem only for people with GSync monitors( even if you have it disabled). Someone on Steam said their score jumped 6K when they switched to a non- GSync monitor.

So anyone worried about these cards getting hammered in Ryse by AMD cards?
AMD cards always have games here and there that they work well with for whatever reason.

If it was the norm rather than an exception, I might feel otherwise, but in that case, I probably wouldn't have gone Nvidia in the first place.
