Nvidia Launches GTX 980 And GTX 970 "Maxwell" Graphics Cards ($549 & $329)

mxwhDsd.png

I think I'm at +170/+500. MSI cards

I'm amazed at how well Crysis 3 runs in 4K. I maxed out the settings w/SMAA and got about 45fps average, and then put TXAA x 4 on for a joke(given that it usually halves your fps), and was surprised that it was actually very playable at about 30fps.

Anywhere I can find the EVGA 980 (SC)? Right now my Amazon order looks to be in limbo, no date estimate. I've also got a notification setup on Newegg, but that doesn't look much better. I'm in no rush, but this uncertainty bugs me.

Just tried it. Didn't do a think for me. Still scoring around 17K GPU. :(

Nice!

That's what I was expecting. 25-30K GPU. From what I've read elsewhere, it might be a problem only for people with GSync monitors( even if you have it disabled). Someone on Steam said their score jumped 6K when they switched to a non- GSync monitor.
Use GPU-Z what does it say your PCIE is? I occasionally get pretty low scores, but it averages out at like 24000 for me.

Has EVGA released the GTX 970 FTW (04G-P4-2978-KR), or plan on a GTX 980 FTW? Reviews of the 970 FTW are good, but I can't find it anywhere. Also, what's up with the big price hike ($620) on the GTX 980 SC Reference? At this point I might just wait for the 6-8gb version or the Maxwell Ti/Titan.

So anyone worried about these cards getting hammered in Ryse by AMD cards?

Dead Rising 3 also performed relatively better on AMD at launch as it didn't have any crash issues unlike Nvidia cards. So straight up next gen console ports performing better on AMD cards due to console's having AMD hardware? IDK.

AMD cards always have games here and there that they work well with for whatever reason.

If it was the norm rather than an exception, I might feel otherwise, but in that case, I probably wouldn't have gone Nvidia in the first place.

With Ryse Crytek made the game to take advantage of compute power, an area where GCN cards cream what Nvidia have to offer. Most games don't do that so it can to and fro as Sean says, but with Ryse Nvidia weren't going to stand much of a chance.

To any others that got one of the following EVGA GTX 970 with ACX2.0 cooler, a new firmware was released to enable 0rpm fans when the card is idling between 29C -33C.

EVGA GTX 970 ACX 2.0 Firmware Update v1.1

New firmware updates are available for select EVGA GeForce GTX 970 graphics cards, this update introduces a new feature for ACX 2.0 cards: 0% fan mode when idle. This feature allows the fan to stop spinning when the card is below 60-67C, drastically reducing acoustic level when the system is idle. Please note the 0% fan feature is ONLY for ACX 2.0 versions, as the fan motor in ACX 1.0 is not able to support 0% mode. For ACX 1.0 versions, the update (when available) will fine tune the fan performance and provide better acoustics overall.

This update will be applied to new cards going forward, so in the near future this update will not be necessary to apply as most if not all cards will have it already.

I know this probably has already been posted since it's a week old but some people might have just bough one of those cards and not know about it.

Got the ASUS Strix 970 after having had the Club3d 290 Clubace for a few weeks. This is the card I should have got the first place. The silence. The power. So good. The 290 is a beast but the 970 is so much better suited to my needs.

After seriously researching an upgrade to my HD 6850 I made a shocking discovery. Not only is the 970 only 4 times as strong as my card, a release price face off only gives this a 2 - 2.5 price efficiency increase. If I face it off against a current new HD 7850 it's down to 1 - 1.5 . The only thing you gain is more texture memory and bandwidth, good for AA and downsampling.

4 years after the 6850, this is a really really sad state of afairs. The 6850s current itteration should be 4 times as powerful, not a card on a completely different price point. If this keeps up the next console gen will be super disappointing in resolution and frame rate. At this pace, 4k is far far away.

... not to mention at 120fps :-/

Huge improvement with downsampled 4K and 2xAA for WTNO over 1080p. Now to see what holds 60...

EDIT:
Here is 1080p with 8x.

EDIT2:

Some more gameplay shots at 4K, 2xAA. So far some drops but holding strong.

Pretty damn impressive. The day we can 4K the more intensive games will be something. These shots are fantastic compared to 1080p, especially in motion. I'm playing on a 60" LCD from a short distance and it looks clear like a smaller desk monitor.

Well, I'm still on a Z67 motherboard, so the cards are running at PCIE 2.0 x8, but that shouldn't affect the score this drastically.

http://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/Impact-of-PCI-E-Speed-on-Gaming-Performance-518/

I should do some game benchmarks to compare to other 980 SLI owners to figure out if it's just 3DMark or if my performance is compromised everywhere. I didn't pay another $600 for a slight performance boost.

What are some good candidates? You have any intense game benchmarks?

Anyone know how to fix an issue with Geforce Experience 2.1.3 not updating (i have 2.1.2)? It keeps failing in system check for .net 4 and wont install. Tried everything, first time using an update is failing. I have admin rights and already have .net 4.5 installed. On their forums a few people are reporting the same problem but there is no help given for the issue. I have windows 7 64bit.

I decided to give amazon another call and it seems like my zotac 970 won't be shipping until November... so I decided to buy an r9 270 for $70 from eBay. I was gonna wait for a but I can't go on for a month without playing my video games. Newegg had some in stock earlier this week but sold out fast. Yet I prefer Amazon for the two day shipping and return policy, so gonna stick with Amazon.

Well it's team Red for now...
Wow, November? I placed my order for the Gigabyte 970 yesterday...Maybe I should be on the lookout for 970s that come in stock elsewhere.

I've noticed that one of my 980s is significantly less powerful than the other, which is probably the case with you. Disable SLI, and connect your monitor to the new card and re-bench it using just that card. Compare this result with the first card you received, and if it's a lot lower it's the card that is at fault.

The highest score that I've gotten in SLI with a OC has been this:

http://www.3dmark.com/fs/2942805

Now the indivisual scores of each cards are:

http://www.3dmark.com/fs/2941266
and

http://www.3dmark.com/fs/2941428

As you can see the last one is significantly lower than the other, something which I think is causing the low score in the SLI Firestrike test. So far the only thing that I have checked is the ASIC quality of the cards. The card with the highest Firestrike score has a ASIC quality of 80%, while the card with the lower Firestrike score has a ASIC quality of 66%.

I can't do any testing until tomorrow, but what I will do is disable the overclock on both the cards, benchmark each of them in both of the PCIE ports that I have them in currently to eliminate the PCie ports as being the issue. Other than that I don't know what to do. I hardly think that I will be able to RMA the bad card as it does technically work.

Unfortunately(or fortunately I suppose), that's not the case for me. I have tested both cards alone, and they are great overclockers. Both boost to over 1500mhz core and 7.6GHz memory stable. When I tested them one by one, they each achieved well over 15K GPU score in 3DMark. It's some weird SLI issue.

Like I said, I don't think it's the PCIE lanes. I also have a new SLI bridge and solid PSU.

I honestly think it's a software/driver issue. I'll know for sure when I test in some games.

man that sucks, the zotac amp omega was in stock on newegg basically from wednesday morning til yesterday afternoon. I picked up a couple and they are fantastic.

Man am I glad I snagged mine when I did. From my local Microcenter:

Same with the 980s. I just hope it's not the buttcoiners hogging these up again.

Besides the price and brand differences, is there any other differences between all of them?

After playing my games and finding out about forced nvidia settings and downsampling, I'm now seeing the limits of my pc with the GeForce 650. Im gonna hold out to get a 970 during black friday / cyber monday. =) Hopefully there will be deals then!

Different cooling systems, pre-overclocked speeds, and power requirements (some are two 6-pin, others also need a 6+2 pin). The consensus seems to be leaning towards the Gigabyte G1, but none of these cards are bad at all.

Does the gpu output in RGB 0-255 when switching to a TV by default? It looks like limited at the moment and I can't find the full option in the settings.

On Newegg you can sign up to be auto-notified when they're in stock because they sell out quickly. I see on Amazon that the regular gigabyte ships in two to three weeks. The G1 is still out of stock with no update.

Yeah I saw them, but I really want the Amp Extreme because of the extra oc headroom (hopefully) and prefer to buy my cards from Amazon than Newegg. I'm glad your zotac 970's are doing great! I was a bit skeptical since up until a few weeks ago, I had never heard of zotac before. I'm glad they can be a trusted brand.

Thanks, I just put the G1 and the MSI card on auto-notify. I will still probably stalk Newegg until Amazon tells me that my card is shipped.

Zotac has been making pretty good stuff for a few years now. Ive purchased a few of their lower end cards for other builds but this is the first time I have used them in my main gaming rig. I am very pleased with the build quality.

It's always nice to see the lesser known brands getting some recognition - it makes things better for everyone.

In the PC thread there's a post linking to Overclockers.co.uk forums where people have posted good impressions of their Galax 970s.

Does anybody here own Shadow of Mordor? Thinking about picking it up, but that VRAM requirement is making me wary.

Is it possible to run Ultra textures with 4GB of memory at 2560x1440 or should we stick to High?

I'm starting to feel some regret about going 970 over 980. Apparently the improvement at 1440P are more pronounced - and that's my main monitor resolution. Still not really feeling limited at this point I guess. I did survive on a 680 for a while, just playing mostly Dota and Path of Exile.

Re: Mordor, I use High textures on my 970 but I also notch some others down as I'm usually going for 90fps or as close as possible at 2560x1440.
If it causes hitching or stutter it's probably suboptimal for me.

If you've got an EVGA card you can step up.

I have just got a GTX 970.

Has anyone else have the same problem as me setting DSR?
I tried to set it but it crashed the nvidia control panel and now it just shows 'OFF' there is no drop down that says 'ON' under DSR.I read about removing the mouse option that moves the cursor to the default option but that wasn't set on my PC.Restarting the computer didn't help either.

I'm on windows 7

EDIT:uninstalled and reinstalled graphic drivers and it's fixed.

I have a 980 and play at 2560x1440 with ultra textures and everything turned up as high as it can go (vsync off). The benchmark reports an average of 67 FPS. In-game, it varies from 45 to 75, depending on what's going on.

To be honest, the ultra textures aren't a big deal. You could play with high textures and probably not notice the difference most of the time.

I play at 4K with High textures, and everything else on Ultra, and I get like 3.2GB VRAM usage. You should be fine although I would recommend using High textures for the extra FPS.

Great, thanks for the feeback fellas. Good to know it runs well, although I might still wait for a Steam sale and better drivers to pick it up.

A 1500mhz core would do it I'd imagine.

A bit less even.

http://www.extremetech.com/computin...-gtx-980-performance-for-a-fraction-the-price

My MSI runs at stable 1460 boost speed and 2000mhz RAM which makes it almost on par with the 980. Pretty amazing for that money, if you ask me. And it's still very cool and silent! It's a "wow card". Love it.

Awesome. The 970 is definitely the best price/performance GPU to be released in a long time. I paid over $700 for a 780Ti to get similar performance less than a year ago. Not to mention the 970 comes with an additional GB of VRAM compared to the 780Ti.

I'm still glad I went with the 980 though, but that's because I want the best possible performance at 1440P without having to deal with multicard setups.

This 980 SLI has been giving me a bunch of headaches, so I might go back to a single card.

One 970. But I got distracted this weekend so didn't test how the performance was during fire fights. I will say though that if I can't achieve the IQ I got with 4K DS or other DS, I'll wait until I get a setup that can. The aliasing without DS is horrific for WTNO.

My EVGA Supernova G2 850w PSU that I bought on 9/14/14 decided to die today when I turned on my PC.

Now I play the RMA waiting game...

/sigh

Thank god my old PSU still works even though it's rigged up VERY badly at the moment.

Bad luck on that, it's a great PSU otherwise.

chances of a 980 Ti by the end of the year?

I doubt it, GM204 has got nothing else to unlock (no more SM's) so if we see anything it'll be GM210 and probably be a Quadro/Tesla with potential consumer version (ala Titan) that they may scale down further for a "980 Ti" type part.

On a side note, these were in stock for a few minutes earlier... I was ready.
