Pachter Predicts: Xbox One outsold PS4 in September (dance, you puppets)

Yeah. I mean having monthly OS updates is nice and everything, but it's not like interacting with the Xbone is straight out of Minority Report whereas you need a hand crank, pulleys and levers to navigate through the PS4's user interface. They both do what they need to do.

And honestly, if the crux of your argument is "b-b-but it has a better OS!" you've already lost me. I don't care. I just need the machine to run the games I put in the disc drive or install on it. Everything else is fluff.

My favourite PS4 OS feature has been there since the start and is almost entirely invisible. The lightning fast installs. In terms of popping a game in and just playing its great. Instant deletions as well which is so much better than the PS3 experience, probably because of its FreeBSD underpinnings.

To be honest, i don't know why its always raised as an issue when clearly it's not.

Yes Xbox One has Sunset Overdrive and The Master Chief Collection (which is extremely good value for money) on the horizon. Xbox One definately has an advantage with these two over the PS4.

Definitely; Sunset Overdrive is the biggest Xbox One release for some time. 2015 is looking beastly for the PS4 with Tearaway Unfolded, Aliennation, Axiom Verge, The Tomorrow Children, Until Dawn, Bloodborne, The Order, Persona 5, Wild, etc...great year ahead for gamers!!

That depends on your tastes. While it's also on PS3, LBP3 is looking awesome.

True; I'm actually a big LBP fan so it is considered a very big title for me :D

That first bold for me means little as my TV has USB playback.I just select whichever one of the 4 USB drives I've got attached (3 on a USB bridge & a 1TB) from my TV, which also means I don't have to have additional hardware running while I do so.

The second bit...well, that's pretty subjective. I've got about 15 titles in total, and I don't find it unwieldy since it organises them in last accessed order, and it takes all of about 3 seconds to scroll from one end to the other if I *really* need to look up War Thunder, and if I put the disc for a game in (say TR:DE) it jumps to the front.

I can see why some people might think the barebones isn't good, but I don't especially like lots of bells & whistles in an OS.
Maybe its just me but i really don't understand all this fapping over an OS. This is a video games console. I just want to play games. Any OS issues or anything to do with an OS i will worry about on my PC since.
Someone earlier in the thread made a good point. The PS2 while having a barebones OS didn't struggle to appeal to gamers.
I don't buy a console to stare at an OS all day so i really don't understand why all the negativity towards PS4's OS.

So many good games coming to both consoles in 2015. I'm not a Halo fan but after i played Halo 3 last generation, i really could see why the series is so loved. Halo 5 im looking forward to see what that brings as well as Gears of War, my first multiplayer game on 360 and loved it.
Then there is Uncharted 4. Played 1 and 2 last generation on PS3, loved that too. 2015 is going to wreck bank accounts lol.

Thanks for this. The "no games" argument or Xbox One has far more games argument was very inaccurate. Xbox One does have the one big exclusive in the form of Sunset Overdrive. That is the one area where I feel PS4 has no equal for the fall lineup. Q1 2015 lineup is sweet though!
Sunset Overdrive is an exclusive but I seriously doubt it will be a system seller. I do hope it ends up being a great game and does very well though since I am a huge fan of Insomniac

To your first point, I agree somewhat since my HDTVs also handle thumb drives, but I've found that my Panasonic Plasma (2013) and Vizio LCD (2014) dont play back as many formats as either the PS3 or the Xbones. Of note: the next Xbone media update is reportedly going to enable .mkv playback along with subtitle support. No other set top device or TV I know of will do this format yet.

As for the OS, yeah I hear you. Its very subjective. At launch I preferred PS4's simplicity. But over time I've grown to appreciate the way Xbone organizes things, particularly my games. I don't have a big PS4 collection yet so its still tolerable, but its definitely not well thought out for the long term. I'll likely end up with 50+ games at some point after I upgrade the hard drive to 1TB or larger. Horizontal scrolling without the ability to organize alphabetically, put games into folders by letter or genre, and/or fill the entire screen with game tiles is going to get old fast.

I agree. I recently had to care for my grandad because he had heart surgery, and decided to take my PS3 instead of PS4 because I wanted to use the time to clear some backlog. I'd completely forgotten about installs. Was sat there in agony waiting for my games to load. By the time they'd finished installing I'd lost interest in actually playing the games.

I then promised myself to never take instant game playing for granted ever again.

Frankly, I find the Sunset Overdrive sales hype laughable. I just don't get it.

As far as sales this holiday are concerned, I doubt Xbox Ones will be purchased for their exclusive fall lineup. The big games are still 3rd party and on both consoles (run better on PS4). If any console will be purchased for exclusive games during those months, it will be the Wii U (Bayonetta 2 & Smash). Wii U is the critical darling this year and should see a sales uptick, but the PS4 will still rule going into 2015. Bloodborne people.

I agree with this.
While Sunset Overdrive looks like fun, I don't see it as a system seller at all. I have interest in it as an Xbox One owner, but if I was only left with my PS4, the game itself wouldn't get me into frantic mode to purchase an XB1 for it. It doesn't strike me as a game I can't live without. While I'm sure it will be fun, I have this random feeling that it's going to be very short for some reason. Not based on anything but my gut though.

There is no argument PS4 firmware was way behind on media functionality. But everyone seems to forget they are pushing a lot of new things on the gaming side.
First of, firmware 2.0 bring that remote co-op thing which is all new feature that no one did before.
PSnow service. Granted, pricing model is all over the place, but tech wise, everyone seems impress. Sony is pioneering game streaming technology here.
Project Morpheus, first console maker that hop on the VR bandwagon, a tech might or might not be the future of gaming.

Let's not forget unlike others, lots of new content for each big gaming show. There are another one at Vegas by the end of the year, who knows what new stuff they will bring?
Not to mention all the hard work they put on courting indie titles to their platform.

Sure, monthly OS update is impressive, but lets give Sony some credit for all the work they have done in 2014.

I agree completely. SSOD isn't enough. The Halo: MCC will sell some units. But that's about it & I don't see that being enough to put it over the PS4. The biggest games this holiday are 3rd party for sure, and I'd bet most people will buy a PS4 who haven't already.

GTA V is a remaster of a multiplat game that came out a year ago and sold so well that few owners of last gen consoles that buy at least one game a year don't have it, and most of those who do have it won't likely drop another $60 on a game they bought for the same amount last year, especially in a time of the year when there are other, newer games coming out almost every week.

Halo is a remaster of four games that are staying exclusive to a single platform brand that (for the most part) are old enough to garner huge amounts of nostalgia for those who played them and as a result huge amounts of internet hype, so much so that people who have only played one or two Halos are interested in picking this up to play the other games they haven't played.

Add to the fact that GTA V doesn't seem like it will be marketed for shit while MS will likely advertise MCC as much as they can, and you can easily see that MCC will sell well whereas GTA V will do well, but not really groundbreaking levels. Keep in mind that Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition launched in an otherwise empty month and only did 85k. I expect GTA V to do 100k-ish, but I don't think it'll push consoles really any hard or anything and it definitely won't be near the top for that month. MCC, on the other hand, IMHO has the potential to do 200k-ish+.

GTA5 on next-gen consoles will have new content and graphics.

Also, here's a picture of GTA sales on various platforms (A bit outdated, since GTA4 has sold like 25 million copies.) :

GTA: San Andreas, in particular, is relevant, since it was first released on PS2, then Xbox. Despite the fact that it came out for the Xbox just 5 months before the release of Xbox 360, so, if the chart is correct, it still sold 2 million.

You know what prediction would have been great to get a real reaction from the gaming community?

"By September, 2014, console gaming will become obsolete. PC gaming will overturn the market."

That graph seems wrong. Didn't GTAV sell 32.5 mill copies already?

EDIT: I'm dumb, don't mind me.

It's called Quality of Life- I can sit down, fire up the xbox, fire up a game, decide to watch some tv, play a movie, re-launch the game, etc etc.. It's a matter of moments for certain, but it does add up and i truthfully find it important to me. Your issue about a gaming device for gaming is perfectly fine, there's nothing wrong with that. I would say on the whole there is an expectation for more more media-centric applications from entertainment areas these days than say the PS2 days, but *shrug*.. It's all about what's important to you as a consumer

.

Driving to work today i heard a RADIO commercial for the game , and it was such a corny commercial that it would have turned me off from the game. It was like they wanted to sell it to my daughter or my mom, but then it ended with "oh yea, its rated M for mature, obviously "

It was lame.

This includes China right? Then it would make sense I just realized that. Only because PS4 hasn't launched yet.

Nope, this is only regarding NA sales. (Although including China really would make this prediction make sense)

Pachter isn't paid to make predictions on gaming consoles. This was just something he mentioned on the side for a subscription on a whim. He just didn't do enough research.

I have an input button for that.

I don't know much about this guy, all I see is headlines every now and then with his 'predictions' and given how wrong they are most of the time, I've decided I don't like the guy and won't give him the time of day to give a shit about his 'predictions.'

That's an, um, interesting source you have there.

Shhhh...too much logic and sense. lol

but seriously, I agree that the OS is behind as far as media functionality, but everything else works just fine for me. I have small frustrations that I have voiced here, but I appreciate the speed of the OS and simplicity. Last night my friends streamed their Madden game, I checked the "Whats new" section and hopped in seamlessly to watch.

Most of us can get caught up in the lack of firmware updates from Sony...I know I have. BUT..

You made great points with their attempts to push tech on the gaming side with VR, Co-op, and streaming.

Sometimes we have to take a step back and look at the positive things Sony are doing. Glass half full perspective.

This is an unwinnable battle. Some people truly don't care about the media centric features in the XB1. I, personally think they are great, but there are others who just want to play Madden/2K/COD, party chat, and watch netflix. They log on to play some games with their buddies and then switch to Netflix to watch tv shows with their significant other.

Maybe those people don't know what they're missing because they don't have it? That's left up to MS to convince those people to take a chance and since their intial stumbles, they are making a great attempt.

they are way behind on media functionality, if we want to be really honest they're behind on a lot of things, their OS is not changing to suit the needs of it's customers and it's showing.

I would be very surprised if the team working on the OS is actually struggling to work on Morpheus too as you gave as a reason for why I should be happy about the lack of OS upgrades.
There is no excuse why we haven't gotten any improvements to media playback, the still less than stellar BD playback, extremely limited media playback, missing folder organization. In general Soony has sucked at keeping it's customers informed as to what they're working on, what we as customers can look forward to (in the near future). Instead we've gotten a number of 'stability' updates which still hasn't addressed a lot of the goofy behavior with the console.

Shadow of Mordor was my first disc I'd put into the PS4, despite having the system since launch. Just always went digital. Never knew how fast the installs were. I was blown away when it was ready so soon.

What a crock of shit. There are numerous quotes from Sony that they're listening to consumer feedback and working on various features to be implemented in future updates.
Google search if you unsure but that bolded part is just nonsense.
EDIT: The stability updates (not a fan of them but i'm sure they are being released for a reason) is a let down. People want more features but Sony is not a software company so expecting them to be on the level of Microsoft when it comes to software is foolish.
Apologies if i came across a bit strong with my initial comment. It just didnt sit well with me and i could have worded it better.

I applaud their effort on the functionality front as well. Over the past few months, that has been what has attracted me most about the X1.

I think part of the problem with selling a media center these days is that it's a flawed concept in an age where media devices are ubiquitous. Every one has smart phones, tablets, laptops and PCs. TVs and TV boxes are getting internet connections and media apps. With the ability to project your portable devices to televisions, why would you need an expensive box specifically for viewing media? We live in an age of multi-tasking devices being used by multi-tasking people. The only thing that consoles bring to the equation at all is the ability to play a certain tier of gaming.

Even though I use my consoles for Netflix, it's purely a matter of convenience as opposed to necessity. The media function can be fulfilled by three other devices currently sat in my bedroom. I dunno. Maybe my understanding of the market isn't quite there and these are actually features that do sell consoles, but experiences of products marketed this way (PS3, Xbox One) indicate that they aren't major factors in selling a console.

I don't want to sound rash, but they have little incentive to at the moment. In the eyes of the masses the PS4 is the darling console. Even with the media playback hiccups and data storage oragnization (or lack there of), it's still selling gangbusters and it does'nt look like anything is going to change the course of this train anytime soon. Of course I'm just playing devil's advocate here. You may represent a small percentage of PS4 owners out in the wild who cares this much about OS functionality where as the rest may just care about playing awesome games on the console of their choice. Just a thought.

What a crock of shit. There are numerous quotes from Sony that they're listening to consumer feedback and working on various features to be implemented in future updates.
Saying they're listening and actually following through is another thing.
Personally I don't recall the last patch by them that addressed many of the community requests. The DriveClub debacle, and how long it took for Sony to come out and say they're having problems (and no, don't give me that shit that Evo is to blame, Sony dropped the ball on the game's release as well).

People want more features but Sony is not a software company so expecting them to be on the level of Microsoft when it comes to software is foolish.
Is it really foolish? They want to be compared to Microsoft, their hardware clearly is better.. using the excuse that they're not a software company is silly. I don't expect OS patches monthly (though I'd love to have them). I do however expect some feedback from Sony saying what they're working on, what I can expect to see in the near future and when. I haven't heard anything concrete from them in a very long time. This may be a Japanese effect, but that isn't an excuse either. This is a global machine, a global company and they need to start acting as such. Sony needs a community manager that has his ears to the community and can give people the low-down on whats upcoming, and address current issues in a timely manner.

Apologies if i came across a bit strong with my initial comment. It just didnt sit well with me and i could have worded it better.
This is GAF man, we all expect nothing less :)

And this is my biggest concern. Sony gets complacent and we see the Sony of old PS2 era where they were happy to flaunt their lead rather than continue to push the console forward.
We as their customers need to hold their feet to the fire and drive them to continue to develop the machine, or at least give better feedback to their customers to what they're working on and when we can see tangible results.

All talk, little results.

I'm all for them listening and everything, but you can't deny that Sony is being extremely slow in this aspect.

I thought people here on GAF regarded the PS2 era as the golden years of gaming for Sony?

I definitely understand what you are saying. Tablets and phones have shouldered the media resposibility. I used to game with my laptop open and right next to me. That has been replaced by my phone and tablet lol.

I was just about to post this.

Whilst I have no idea whether he's right or wrong the majority on here seem to go with the latter.

I would love it, just love it (reference for UK Soccer Fans only) if XBox beat the PS4 though.

This thread would explode. Little chance though?

About as much chance as Newcastle had in 96

I thought people here on GAF regarded the PS2 era as the golden years of gaming for Sony?

I don't, it's what lead to shit like the infamous "console war over, the battle for second place is moot" E3 slide

And machines like the PS3 where I was suggested to get a second job to pay for it's high price.

I thought people here on GAF regarded the PS2 era as the golden years of gaming for Sony?
Many would argue that the ps2 area takin games even from other systems are and will go down as the best time in history to be a gamer and the ps2 was at the top of that era and with it some of the best games ever made
