Someone sell me on Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth.
I've been on the fence for a while since I don't know if I'd enjoy it.
I remember trying to watch the anime for it like a year ago but I couldn't really get past the first episode without getting bored/losing interest.
Because:
Ahem, it's basically a mix of video game references/humor (mostly japanese but some western...some), humor relating to anime tropes (if someone is a tsundere they will be explicitly called out/mocked for it). If you can't enjoy video game references (from the general to the explicit) you won't get nearly as much enjoyment out of it, but...you probably also wouldn't be on NeoGAF either. Lots of the enemies are references to either specific games or generic "RPGs would probably have this right" style enemies.
Combat is fun, it's a bit like Quest 64's combat system where you move around in a ring on your turn and aim an AOE panel for your attacks, with a variety of normal attacks (with a build-your-own-combos system), special attacks (magic, buffs, skills, you know), EXE attacks (big super attacks that you recharge by hitting enemies a lot), and CPU mode (transform to deal more damage). Cobmat's pretty good in Rebrith and performance is pretty solid (prior games have some issues, especially the first game which is why this is a remake!)
It's not super long, maybe 20-30 hours for the first playthrough. It has good visual novel tools for reading the dialog (or skipping it), dual audio. Also very cheap character DLCs that add fully realized and voice acted characters (for battle only, it's not story relevant), tons of characters to play as.
If you wouldn't enjoy the humor/aesthetics I think it's possible to still enjoy the combat but I wouldn't personally recommend it if you don't. Here's a random snippet of some of the humor I like in it:
I'm seriously getting pissed with Neptunia. Why the hell is everything in the Lastation dungeon two shotting me and I'm already Level 7!?
Are you doing the optional dungeons and fighting most normal monsters you see? Because you should do that. Also buy life rings ASAP, they add a ton of health, at least one extra hit from almost every boss.
Also stay away from the orange enemies on the mini map if you're not, those are not normal enemies.
