Not gonna lie.... Both the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 are tempting.
Even with the massive size the Nexus 6 i'm still tempted.

Here is a nice page with some size comparisons for the 6 vs other phones:

Edit: After calibrating the website to match my Nexus 5 is size.... O_o The Nexus 5 fits inside the screen of the Nexus 6. Meaning the entire outside of the phone fits within the screen edges of the Nexus 6.

HOLY CRAP!

But I think I'm going to wait.
LOLlipop will make my 5 and 7 feel fresh. So I will wait until then.

Yeah, this once again confirms to me that the Nexus 5 (or perhaps another smaller Nexus model in the future) isn't going anywhere.

No fucking way the ginormous Nexus 6 becomes the sole Nexus phone. That seems bonkers.

Sigh, no OLED. When's the OLED revolution gunna happen? I think I'm going with the Galaxy tab s.

When they stop looking disgusting.
Never thought I'd like LCD so much, but its caveats are so much smaller and it gives a more even and uniform image, especially with solid colors. Then you have power/overheating and lifetime.

already confirmed the 5 is sticking around

also still on the nexus site https://www.google.com/intl/all/nexus/

I think he means that he expects Google to release a new Nexus 5, at the very least next year.

The current Nexus 5 hardware is still good. And I rather Google waits for the newer chips to come out before upgrading the 5.

Maybe next year HTC will take a stab at it? It would be a nice throwback to the Nexus One.

i did see somebody on reddit claiming the 5 would be refreshed in the spring. they ended up getting n6 stuff right. so who knows

Honestly, I'd take Sony over HTC on making the next Nexus 5. But yeah, maybe make a Snapdragon 810 Nexus 5 for the next one (and made by Sony).

Since the Nexus 6 is still a month out, I'm waiting to see what happens with the Droid Turbo variant that's been floating around -- the unlocked one coming to At&T and T-Mobile.

It has all the same specs as the Nexus 6, except it is 5.2 inches and a 3,900mAh, which means it will last more than a day easily.

The only issue is that it may have capacitive menu buttons. Yuck.

Yes, this is what I meant.

Assuming the Nexus line stays put for the foreseeable future (which is a pretty big assumption), I can't see Google dropping a standard-sized phone from the lineup. I definitely think we'll get new Nexus 5 (or another Nexus 5-sized phone) next year.

I've been wanting Sony to make a Nexus device since the Nexus One.

Originally Google approached Sony Ericsson to make the Nexus One. They turn Google down and they went with HTC.

If you can find that post on Reddit I would appreciate it.
It could be a very nice change of pace if Google has two Nexus announcements per year. So every six months we get a new Nexus phone. :-)

crap i was getting 2 different users confused. don't think he said anything about the 6. but keeps repeating that a 5 refresh is coming in the spring. grab your salt

Thanks!

Google is thinking the Nexus 5 doesn't need a successor yet. Next spring :)

With the new ART version, better battery management, and what looks to be a more streamlined OS, the Nexus 5 should fly.

So it should be a good budget phone for another year.

I really am pissed about the fucking memory on the Nexus 9. Seriously, stop being so damn complacent Google. Every time I see sale on a 64 Gb micro SD card for $30, I want to slap a Google employee involved in that decision. It mainly makes me upset because their asking for premium pricing now on this. The Nvidia K1 is truly impressive and give a better graphical performance than iPads (for once) and the design looks fantastic. Why couldn't they do this one thing? 16 GB for media consumption device like a tablet as nice as the Nexus 9 or iPad Air is joke.

Totally agree. High resolution magazines, games, and comics take up a ton of space. Really hate this low & fixed storage combination that Apple and Google force on us.

I've never had anything in my life overheat on me more than my S3. Not sure how much OLED factors into that but Jesus. Had to send that phone off after a while.

He just posted a confessional on Reddit where he says he just made educated guesses and doesn't really know anything. He works in marketing and was simply doing a social experiment.

Simply put, a Nexus 5 refresh does not exist, never has, and it likely won't until next Fall at the earliest.

Apple at least offer 64GB and 128GB versions. They're not cheap but they're there at least.

Apple also commands large purchase orders for components. So they get the best deals on price and components (but yet still charge an insane premium).

Google does not have the #'s to get the cheaper prices on the bigger capacity memory chips.

What some of you are asking is for Google to subsidize these components, when they just do not have the sales.

Well that sucks!

Thinking about selling my 6 plus for this. The hardware specs for the nexus 6 are way better right? 3Gb of RAM!

I do wish they had opted for a sd slot though. I'm out of space on my 128gb.

More ram doesn't mean better specs overall. The nexus 6 is no slouch but the 6/6+ tends to outperform the other 805 chip phones on the market currently . And the camera won't be nearly as good.

Google don't have to subsidise anything if they allow for expandable storage

Ah ok thanks for the information. I was under the impression the 805 was faster.

It's not like it's not fast. But if you want purely better specs then it is a bit odd to sell your 6+. If you want android that makes sense since it's the best pure android phone on the market.

Anyone think that next year some time we might see a Nexus 5 (2015) a la the N7?

Edit: The reasons being that a) it allows them to keep a smaller phone but not have it with "old" specs and b) it solves their naming convention trouble in a way that they've demonstrated willingness to do before.

More memory is not that expensive and everyone knows it so I don't want to hear that shit. I'm annoyed that Apple has kept the 16GB base around, but I'm happy that they have moved to 64GB and 128GB, which will finally put some pressure on everyone else.

Also, when the BoM comes out for this, it will show that they are definitely making a good amount of profit on each sold. It's not like I'm asking them to make this shit $299. If you're going charge a premium for a flagship tablet that's a media consumption device and you never going to a micro sd card slot that people keep bitching about, AT LEAST give decent size options. If the Xperia Z3 Tablet gets heavily discounted next year, I might be tempted to even go with that because it's probably the best looking tablet, snapdragon 801 is still a great performer, the battery life will be insane, and I can expand storage to 128GB+...

Can it be the camera software?

We've been saying its software since the N5 camera (perfectly capable on paper) tanked. If it is software, it needs to be fixed immediately. It was never taken care of with the N5 - only several botched attempts that actually lowered the overall IQ and caused this bizarre refocus syndrome.

Ah ok thanks for the information. I was under the impression the 805 was faster.

Well, 'faster' is not always so absolute.

Apple pretty much wrecks everyone else in single-core execution.

While the Nexus 6 looks to be the current king of the hill for multi-core.

Man, the N5 holds up incredibly well for a year-old phone.

Yeah, between the N5, Moto X and the forthcoming GS5 GPE all serving up ~5" stock android* options, I can kinda understand Google going phablet with the N6.

* Purists might not count Moto X as stock android, but it's pretty darn close.

Yep Gonna wait for the Nexus 5 ver.2.

right so you actually have to touch the phone to see if you have a notification. right now i can glance over and see the led blinking a particular color and know exactly what kind of notification is waiting

just more proof to me that this was never intended to be a nexus device

If I have to "touch" or move my device to get the active notification then it is already a failure. I often leave my phone unattended with it sitting on a charging stand. When I come back if an email or text has come in I can clearly see it without touching or moving or going anywhere near my phone. As for the low camera sensor rubbish, if I am already looking at the screen for the camera to work then there is a pretty good chance I am doing so to actually LOOK at the phone anyway so that seems a bit pointless.

So I wouldn't say active notifications are a killer feature. I would say it's a down grade from the LED notifications.

Wtf aw hell nah. Go research Active Notifications. Makes LED notifications look like garbage. And NO, you don't need to touch your phone or anything.

Seriously, go look at Moto Display in action.

Honestly, with how the new iPads went in the Apple event, it makes me want the 9 even more. Seriously, it really is a serious beast :).

Yeah, they're actually on the screen, but the screen is always on in a way. You can see the time and any notifications at a glance.

It's the single thing I'm ever envious of about the Moto X.

I just bought a chromebook, but the Nexus 9 is very tempting, and if I get one I'd just turn my chromebook into a Linux machine.

Yep. Here's a gif. It'll blink like this every 15 or so seconds when you receive a notification.
