PS4 System Software Preview – USB Music Player, New Home Screen Colors, More

Personally, I don't think that excuse flies any more. PSN is a paid service now, and with the history they have with the PS3 and the accumulated experience they should've gotten (both on what their paying customers would like to have, and acquired software expertise over the years), I think it's fair to have certain expectations on what the product actually offers.

MS is slaughtering them when it comes to updates, which can probably be ascribed to their software experience, but there's no reason why it should take a year to deliver one of the main features they promised before the launch.

They do because Xbox OS is based on Windows kernel which is already has all the features and they need to tweak a little to Xbox one. But, PS4 is based on completely new OS based on Open source FreeBSD which lacks all the features and it needs to be implemented from the start for PS4 unlike Windows which is already have all of the features they need in some way and just needs some touches for Xbox one in API.

I couldn't think of a less relevant feature to add in 2014 on any product or platform.

Well you haven't been hanging around the forums listening to the shitstore from everyone when it hasn't been announced in the updates. So many people have been asking for it and shitting on Sony for not putting it in there. Apparently they didn't include it so that they sold more Music Unlimited subs...... well that's what people on here would have you believe.

Plus Sony is developing the OS sooo that doesn't help either.

"Fuck you Sony, you never update anything. Microsoft updates Xbox One every month"
*Sony announces updates, gives details*
"Fuck you Sony, I wanted that other feature*
Hue.

I guess the "every month" part is important. Who knows when the next PS4 update will happen that doesn't only "improve stability". It took them a year to add MP3 support for crying out loud.

To be fair we can take awesome screen shots.

The vitrol... Is it that serious?

Yes. I've had enough of my connection being maxxed out by three/four games attempting to download updates at the same goddamn time.

Such a stupid approach to how the console handles downloads.

That USB music player thing is A: cool and B: odd. Why not stuff on the HD too?

That Add to Library button is really interesting, since it'll probably cost Sony more money for implementing that one. Very awesome that it's there now, though.

I don't really get the feature to be honest, they should just automatically tie any new Playstation Plus games to your account. (Not download, just give access for the future)

Sony pays the pub/dev based on the amount of downloads, so that won't work.

Sony still yet to have their Ferrero Rocher moment.

At the start you thought Sony is really going to give Xbox a fight in the OS feature space and they did but reading these updates it's like going back to early PS3 days and the light years ahead Original Xbox.

What, Sony give Microsoft a fight in the OS department? Man, people must have been on drugs or something.

lol USB music. Really?

Can't wait for Update 3.0

Is it not obvious that Sony saves money if not everyone who has PS+ acquires a license for every game offered? Whether or not that saved money goes into improving the games offered via PS+ or back into Sony's coffers I don't know but it's imminently obvious why it's done that way.

If in fact the savings do go towards better PS+ games then you as a consumer wouldn't want an auto-add option because your own future game selection would suffer. Personally I'm not really convinced the savings go towards better PS+ game selection though

Can into this thread with the expectation a high percentage of people would be shitting on the news regardless of what was announced... I wasn't disappointed.
Strange about the music having to be stored on USB though, surely must be a technical limitation of the way the OS is designed?
As for other changes including notifications about friends logging on etc. there are always little UI fixes with each update that go unannounced. It happened with the PS3 and it happens with the PS4, so until the update actually drops I won't get ahead of myself.

sooo we still don't know when this is coming, and they say there are more details to come. how long ago did they first start talking about this update with shareplay? it sounds like it's going to be a huge update, which is nice, but it's a bit frustrating that so many features are being held back for a big update.

now get a proper URL. How about playstationstore.com?

You know, this might be a bit nitpicky in the grand scope of things, but to this day I don't think I've ever managed to type in the correct store url on the first try.
It's just so fucking needlessly illogical.

The FreeBSD kernel does not "[lack] all the features." Which kernel you're using doesn't matter too much when you're developing this kind of application software. Even if the Xbox One is using ntoskrnl.exe (and I don't know if it does, to be honest), that doesn't drastically simplify things.

it says you can play music while gaming right here. unless "custom soundtracks" are something completely different?

No, custom soundtracks is where a game properly integrates your music into the game. Meaning if we take Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit for example, it allowed you to add your music into the game. It wasn't just simply using the console music player to just play music over the game, but NFS let you pick what songs you wanted to use, where you wanted to use them (do you want this song to play during races or only in the menus?), and properly transitioned when going between racing and back to the main menu.

Examples of proper custom soundtracks would be:

GTA games on PC and on OG Xbox
Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit (2010)
SSX (2012)

there are others, but the point is simply playing music over a game via the console player is not the same as actual custom soundtracks. Hopefully my description made some sense.

Without a way to sort our downloads, they shouldn't.

Maybe the harddrive bandwidth is completely saturated by the games while they're running? Seems silly, but I could see that being the case.

Back Up Data: Data on PS4 can be backed up and resorted using USB storage. This will back up all data for the console, including settings, save data, screenshots, video clips, download data, and more

Wait, does this mean external HDD support?

They werent kidding when they said Ps4 is like the PS2 era. We know have music back on USBs. J/K. Happy for the update and welcome some of the additions. Im hoping there are some extra stuff not mentioned on the list though.

That would make to much sense and maybe cost them money...

is there any explanation for why you can't save your music files locally instead of having to use usb storage?

why would they do it this way?

also, suspend/resume is gonna miss the PS4's one year anniversary lol

I wonder if the reason for not allowing media to be stored on the system is due to the new requirement for all games to be installed to the HDD. 500GB is already not very much space for games alone. Maybe Sony want to avoid people quickly running out of HDD space and having to manually manage it.

The only bullet points that do anything for me are the themes and color options, as well as the USB backup. Though, it would be nice to be able to backup to a replacement HDD, then simply swap the internal drive with the backup without having to retransfer everything back. But that's not that big of a deal, since replacing HDDs shouldn't be a frequent thing.

My biggest want is better organization. I hope it's satisfactory. We never even got bare minimum alphabetical sorting on PS3. I hope that at least makes it to PS4.

Lack of suspend/resume is baffling, considering Sony advertised the feature before it was ever even a thing for Xbox. But I guess I can't assume it's easy to implement, considering even Microsoft can't seem to get even seemingly simpler features like screenshots working.

Oh, and I wonder if this update will fix the bug of not being able to delete some notifications.

Looks like a good list of updates already. Themes and folders is something I've been waiting for since launch. Having bought almost every game... scrolling around the menu is very tedious.
Don't really care about USB music. I already use either spotify or music unlimited. I hope the new music player works at least for MU.... and a spotify app would be even better.
Really hoping that the Game Share feature works out how we all hope it does.

I gave up on wanting DLNA. Bought a WDTV Live SMP and couldn't be happier with how it performs. Much better options for streaming content and much easier than what DLNA on a console would bring.

I'd suggest to anyone who is in dire need of a DLNA streaming device, to just get a device made strictly for streaming. You will have less troubles and better quality with the videos.

This is the big 2.0 update? Music (yay, although USB only is dumb) and some colors? MS is so killing Sony is regards to updates. Is this a US vs Japanese thing?

That's completely up to the game though. For the vast majority of cases, it's going to be muting the game music and replacing it with your own. The first option doesn't even require a firmware update.

Sorry, that Library solution does NOT sound adequate to me. FUCK. This is the one thing I need, the ability to sort my games into folders based on my choosing. Not scroll 15 tiles to the right, select my library, then have to sort all 50 by A-Z or whatever and scroll to wherever my app is.

Jesus christ Sony, sort this fucking out.

I seriously cannot believe it took Sony close to a year to add colored themes and USB playback.

Meanwhie Microsoft puts out these kind of features 12 times a year.
