PS4 System Software Preview – USB Music Player, New Home Screen Colors, More

I really hope sony puts the library at the front of the que, but I doubt the will. It doesn't make sense to me to first scroll past 15 tiles, than to scroll down in the library (where those 15 tiles are also available). Having all your games at the first tile also does make more sense if you have the ability to organize them.

The only thing I dislike about the library so far, is that they are bound to the account. Having multiple purchase accounts makes for different libraries.

Don't like that I can't play music directly from the PS4 but need to have a USB stick plugged in...

Content Area and Library: PS4’s Content Area, which shows the latest games and apps a PS4 owner has used, has been redesigned to help make it easier to quickly find and access content. It now shows 15 of a player’s most used apps or games, and additional items will be added to a player’s Library. The Library on PS4 has improved filter and sort functions to help organize contented by type (game / app / TV & video), name (a – z or z – a), recently used, or install date.

So how does the content area work if it's only the Top15 games? Like, what's with new games/apps that you just used (but only once so far). Deinstalled games should get moved to the library no matter how often you used them. Also you better be able to use voice commands to jump to any game even if it's not in the top15 list.
In the Library, I don't like that they don't have a tag for demos, I don't want everything grouped as "Games". At least it includes also your disc games.

Now give us a date...

In all the games I tried so far (including first party) the music from MU would just play over the game's music and you have to manually mute the ingame music (if possible)...

Weak - same as the Vita then. The 360 had it nailed down when it came to custom soundtracks.

On Wii U, I have virtual console, full retail games, and eshop games in their own different colored folders. I also have all the other native system apps in their own folder too. Now I don't have rows of icons to sift through.
But couldn't you achieve that same functionality with a simple filter system within the library instead of having to organize everything manually? They could simply add filters for full games, PSN games, demos, disc based games, and so on. They may even already have those filters in place, as they only gave a few examples.

Why not both?

So, no support to USB games like Xbox One? =(

I'd like you to know right now that it's not going to happen. That's something you have to design for. From the motherboard and firmware, from OS to dev SDK. They also have that playGo system to worry about.

It seems they are having trouble adding new features, at least the right way. Why can't I upload and use any background image I want, have folders for games, pictures, music and video? Why on earth do I have to plug in a usb pen just to listen to music?

At first I thought they were holding this feature "hostage" cause they wanted us to subscribe to Music Unlimited, but this seems to suggest it's not the case, but still..

I have no idea how hard these things would be to implement, but Microsoft doesn't seem to have that problem. Every month they come up with new features and tweaks; we get stability updates every 2 months. My ps4 is so stable it could withstand a sledgehammer blow without budging. It makes me wonder why the hell is the OS using up 2,5 GB of ram (if I remember correctly) if they can't just patch in important stuff more easily. Back in the ps3 days they could never do party chat cause of ram limitations, and anything they added could potentially be overkill since they were on a tight leash. This gen though they have a very respectable headroom in the OS memory allocation, so I don't know what's the hold up. Where's suspend/resume, for instance?

I'm a huge fan and I love my ps4, but ffs they are really taking their time in giving us what they promised a year ago. First world problems, I know, but sometimes I feel like they're resting on their laurels. The console is selling like hotcakes and they don't feel pressured to step up their game. MS is only being so proactive because sony is beating them up and stealing their lunch money every month. If they were in the lead, maybe the situation would be in reverse.

I hope this leads to custom soundtracks in games and not just music playing in the background and fading out for cutscenes.
I'd be stoked if GTAV had a custom radio station like the Xbox version of San Andreas. Pretty ridiculous that this isn't a given.

I just looked to see how custom music worked in MGS:GZ on PS4. I thought maybe it could import songs from Music Unlimited to a save file sort of thing, but no, it couldn't do custom music at all!? That's a real shame.

Yay, I can't wait to juggle USB ports for charging my Dualshock and using my headset and listening to music!

Thanks Sony for adding MP3 playback in the most frustrating and clunky way possible!

Will we still get game audio while using USB Music?

If so, time for me to load up my Wipeout soundtrack for Driveclub.

Eh with good filtering and sorting folders are actually a worse solution. Steam works just fine with no folders.

Steam has 'Categories' which are basically folders.

A lot of people want them. If you don't, then don't use them, but don't try to convince me I don't need them.

Almost all modern game OSes I can think of have folders.
PS3
Vita
3DS
WiiU
iPhone/iPad/Android/etc.....

I would love to make my own folders like:
Demos
Kids Games
Disc Games
Finished
RPG
Shooter
Racer
Fighting
Video Apps
Music Apps
System Apps
etc........

So if a game from a different account falls below the last 15 titles used, how would I access it on my main account?

Sony please add the voice changer like the ps3

Seems like we need to build a list of all requested features, as there are a lot popping up. The PSblogshare seems a waste of time.

Why do you think it was a good feature?
Haha guys I know it was annoying, but sometimes I would get home waisted after a night out and play COD with the low pitch voice changer on 😅😅😅

Because the firmware team is a team from Japan. That's the problem and everyone knows that's the problem. Whether it's to not embarrass the Japanese side of the company or some other reason, Sony has kept the OS development there for some god forsaken reason that only they know. We'd get much more competent feature updates and UI design from a western team. They need to just bite the bullet.

If 2.0 works the same way as the current FW... You can't. Currently all installed games are on your ribbon, no matter what account they are from..Last active are also account based, So activating it on your second account, does not move it up the list in your main account. Basically you would be limited to 15 digital titles outside of your main account.

Just organise the content list something like:

Game in disc drive | Whats new (default highlighted at boot) | most recent game/app used 1 | most recent 2 | most recent 3 | Games | TV&Video | music |

you don't need 15 most recent, just a few is enough. Then you have a games folder always visible on screen which is organised like the TV&Video one which you can drill into to see all the games you have installed. You can filter this A-Z, most recent first etc. Then you have the TV&Video one like now, a new music one where music unlimited can go along with other future music apps.

I'd be tempted to put the library up on the top row near settings or store

My issue with folders is that, as I shove content into them, said games/app/etc. become less visible due to being "shoved out of the way" into a sorting system.

I thought I wanted folders on the PS4, but, honestly, I think I prefer Steam's UI the most: the Library is the catch-all w/ sorting options, and the PC's desktop is where I place content I'm using frequently. Sounds like SONY is taking a similar route to Steam's approach, which would make me very happy, especially if the Library actually has robust sorting options.

I have a SanDisk USB that's too thick to fit between the recess for the ports. It requires a lot of force to get at least half of it in so this is doubly frustrating.

Not the best solution, but this could work:

good.

now when are you gonna fix the crappy OS so that it doesn't take 2 hours to send, receive and show/delete messages? In-game it's just so slow and inefficient that it's not even funny. I also wouldn't mind an option to sort trophies.

Those are server issues, not OS issues.

Just because things are in folders doesn't mean you still couldn't have a global search feature. It already does this with voice commands on PS4, XB1.

......I can't even believe I have to justify a system having folders option.

Categories are what I mean by filtering. Having custom categories (including Favorites or Pinned) would be preferable than folders. I think that would be 100x better than folders like on Vita and I think what they are doing now is a good first step.

I would love several folders on the xmb so that I can seperate my sports/ps+/others. I don't want to filter those I want instant access to them within two or 3 presses.

XMB didn't REALLY have folders though, those were filters too. "Album" tag sorting.

I think part of the issue with purely custom folders is a support one. Imagine trying to figure out where a clueless user had stuffed their Netflix app over the phone.

I'd like to think that online friend notifications will be in the update but weren't highlighted because it's not a huge feature and they're probably embarrassed it wasn't in there since launch. I'd like to think that. But this is Sony so I'm assuming we won't be seeing them any time soon
