Metroid prime 4 video preview (new gameplay)

That whole lighter tone with "hero" federation characters was pure shit in MP3 and I'm baffled that they're doubling down on it here. I've never seen a single person say they actively liked that in MP3 lol
Never ceases to amaze me when devs are so deaf to what people liked and didn't.

There's a reason MP1 is an all timer and MP3 pales in comparison.

All that said, nothing in the actual 7 minute trailer suggests this guy sticks around throughout the game, so fingers crossed.

I'm hoping this is a case of "epic opening!" and things fall into a Metroid groove afterwards. Kind of assuming it does.

yeah, most of the trailer shows samus firmly alone, so i feel like these npcs probably appear for relatively short parts in each biome, seems rescuing them in fairly central to the story.

hopefully you find them, do a couple coop puzzles and then they're on their way.

rest of the stuff looks solid imo, loving the art design of these biomes and the music sounds fantastic.

Everything in that trailer looks amazing… except for every time there's someone from the federation on screen.

I'm hoping they all get killed off within the first few hours. I really don't want to deal with rescuing federation soldiers the whole game.
You know damn well there will be a new soldier introduced in every new area and they'll all unite to help Samus in the climax/final boss. It will be very reminiscent of Infinity War and we will all hate every second of it.

I'm really concerned guys. Some of these decisions just have me scratching my head. Why? A companion? WHY!?

Yeah, this definitely looks like a huge potential misstep. Having bland open world-bike sections pales in comparison to this in terms of negatives for me..

Hopefully it's not as bad as it seems.

The problem is that he's obviously not lying about the things he's seen, and we can still read that and not want them in the game. Companions, hints, and focus on NPCs and things like that, open hub world etc.
We can take his "inflammatory" response/feelings out, and have our own conclusions about the negatives mentioned. It doesn't change the fact that they exist lol.

Even the overview trailer today is clearly putting an emphasis on companions and working with them. I don't want a game (in a franchise known for being about solo exploring and isolation) to be about rescuing survivors and escort missions.

those things can be in the game, can you tell me how much time will there be NPCs present? if it is for a small portion of the game (less than 5%), I'm OK with this. Metroid is all about isolation and exploration, I don't think having an NPC accompany you for a few minutes in a 20hr game would change much.

Like I said, I'll play the game and see whats this all about.

I agree, but the fact that the Nintendo overview trailer they put out today has a section dedicated to the NPCs and working with them, makes it seem like they're doubling down on it unfortunately

Its. According to a person that was in the preview presentation, NPCs are just a small portion of the game. The solitary gameplay still intact and bigger.

man, that motorcycle segment looks bad, also Nintendo needs to stop making these narrated trailers, they are awful and anti hype imo

everything else looks OK, ll take a look when it launchs

Can't wait to hear the female federation soldier say "So yeah. I'm suddenly on a completely unknown planet, teamed up with the most famous bounty hunter in the galaxy who inexplicably turns into a ball...I guess this is just my life now. Whats next, psychic powers?"

and "Wait, Ridleys back. AGAIN!? The grandaddy of all space dinos!? Why are dinosaurs even in space!?"

"WOAH I HAVE. LIKE. FREAKING POWERS!!"

Maybe but the overview trailer shows multiple Federation characters that are talking in cutscenes or doing stuff in the game and that's in addition to this bumbling tech guy mentioned in the negative preview.

That stuff is quite a notable element of the trailer. It feels very movie-like.

Those snippets from the previous trailer were the things that most concerned me about that one (most of everything else looked great) and now this new trailer has way more of it.

I want games to be focussed on being games, not on aping the medium of cinema.

I love the hugely improved production standards here, but I don't want to be sitting watching lots of cutscenes, listening to lots of dialogue with melodrama, being followed by annoying NPCs or any of that.

Like you I really hope that all of this stuff is a very minor element of the but even if it is the stuff described in that preview is just flatly negative through and through.

to say I'm craving something like Prime 1 and 2 - particularly Echoes personally - rather than 3 would be a huge understatement

There's nothing else like these games and it's been 17 years.

Yea I mean I was honestly just trying to be as positive as I could possibly muster after that straight-up shitty preview lol.

Prime 1 is one of my Top 5 games, I want nothing more than a fantastic Prime 4, but it's real hard to stay positive. It's just every single time I read something new about this game it's a Homer Simpson DOH! moment.

Fed troopers gotta go by the first boss or the game might be cooked.

GIVE ME ISOLATION GODDAMN IT

It seems pretty likely that they're going to be popping up throughout the game.

You can compare the backgrounds and Samus' suit etc in the footage to see that the soldiers including Mackenzie will be around later in the game.

100%. There's really nothing like Prime, which is a shame. Especially since 2d metroidvanias have become so popular, would think someone would make an effort at a 3d one by now.

I gotta say, the opening sounds like a slog. A very disappointing start. The annoying sidekick & escort mission sounds whack.

But I get the feeling the game is huge. I see no reason for them to include sidekicks and a hub world unless the areas themselves are massive.

I also find it very sus we are getting a fire, jungle and ice area after Metroid Prime Remastered. Why do similar vistas to the first Prime game?

Fingers crossed there is a lot more to everything we are just getting glimpses of. Because a lot of this doesn't make sense. For a game that was made over 6 years, it doesn't sound all that impressive.

This video has a more balanced view of the game, and looks pretty cool as well.

Not so sure as the recent Metroid Prime remaster on the Switch only sold around 1 million copies. And that's on a massively successful platform. I guess the fans everybody talks about have gone AWOL lol....

Metroid has never sold a lot afaik. Doesn't really have much to do with quality.

What did I post to suggest to you I thought sales performance had anything to do with quality?. I merly stated the franchise had neve set the world alight in the terms of it sales. Not that the games are bad. I did suggest that I personally would like to see a little shake up. But nothing more than that.

Part of me wonders if Sylux is another Dark Samus type situation. I get that they basically closed out the original Metroid Prime storyline with 3, but I kind of love the idea of that thing just refusing, beyond all odds, to die. Truly a cosmic horror type character. I mean he seems to be able to control metroids, manipulate the space pirates….lot of Deja Vu here…makes one wonder.

It's going to be like Metal Gear Solid 2. The game initially makes you think Samus will be the star, but she'll be gone after the first segment, leaving you to play as Miles.

Distinct possibility. Since the title refers to Metroid Prime the entity. Of course Sylux might turn out a Federation experiment gone wrong with Metroids. Would make sense why Shock Coil could steal health way back in Hunters.

My guess is he's also a federation trooper and it'll tie into the story in some way with the other troopers. That's probably why they and the federation are a big part of this game.

The background has always been that Sylux is wearing stolen, experimental, federation gear, i.e. it'd have been designed to fit a human. And iirc you can see that the model they used underneath the suit in Metroid Prime Federation Force was that of a federation technician.

I love Prime 1 as most of us here do but I do believe Nintendo needs to be trying these more story driven things to appeal to a wider audience.

Prime 1 introduced a First Person formula that was given NO benefit of the doubt before previews, reviews and release all those years ago. After release it was given its due that it so deserved but ultimately I can't say that it even appealed all that much to those who even played it. Prime 1 sold 2.8 million. That formula as praised at as it was(and still is) couldn't even bring back half of that audience with Prime 2 selling around 1.1 million. Prime 3 had the Wii phenomenon behind it but still only managed half of the original Prime at around 1.4 million. Then we got the phenomenal Prime 1 remake at like $40 bucks and no one bought it.

We know why we enjoy 3D first person Metroid but maybe it needs to be wrapped in a different package. If it's story and character interactions that get more eyes on the series I'm all for it. I fell in love with Metroid because of Ridley and then appreciation of the foot ball pads later, and the actual gameplay after that.

Story and characters properly done is what Metroid needs if it wants to grow. I believe we can have these things and still send Samus alone down some deep hole all on her own. The gameplay looks as great as ever and maybe these story scenes are Trojan Horse the series needs.

Of course this supposes anyone else wants the series to grow in its sales at all, because I do understand it being fine the way it is, selling enough to keep going as it is. Not needing it to change to get more fans in, risking the enjoyment of current fans.

I could also counter my own argument with Prime 3 and Other M having tons of story beats and extra characters and not doing anything for sales.

I've watched the gameplay and cutscenes a few times now and so far I think the animation and voice acting is well done. Super silent Samus is now the most off putting thing for me. I look forward to more of it.
