Complete horseshit. Crytek in its current form is not a good purchase, and I doubt any major publisher seriously considered buying the company outright.

They have promising elements and a few good brands, but as a whole they're a mess. And Sony WWS is most likely not looking for any expansion in the near future. Kaz made a lot of redundancies when he was made CEO two years ago, and they have no need to be expanding again by buying large expensive studios any time soon.

I can see what you're saying, but naming a company certainly creates more buzz. It's no different than news outlets reporting that Google was looking to buy Twitch, which ended up not ever happening because Amazon swooped it and bought it instead. Yes, they could just not name the company until the purchase is final, but it's also interesting to know which companies were in the bidding as well.

I don't doubt that they at least looked into it, because there's a buy-low opportunity there with what Crytek was going through. I would imagine that not just Sony, but other big publishers as well did their due diligence and checked in to see if there's a worthwhile opportunity there.

Vanillaware, Clap Hanz, and Silicon Studio come to mind. SS in particular so they'll own a studio that produces JRPG's.
