Nvidia Launches GTX 980 And GTX 970 "Maxwell" Graphics Cards ($549 & $329)

Thought I would throw in my 2 cents about the Gigabyte 970.

I have mine at 1500mhz with no other modification besides increasing the power limit. I haven't seen it go past 65C under load. The fans are not even audible next to my hyper 212. And absolutely no coil whine, buzzing, anything. In case it matters, I have a Corsair AX750 psu and an ASRock z77 with an i5-2500k at 4.5ghz.

I was a little apprehensive about ordering it with all the talk of coil whine, but couldn't be more pleased with what I got. It is replacing a Radeon 6950 with unlocked shaders, and the performance increase is pretty awesome.

Interesting, I'm running an unlocked 6950 right now... Are you gaming at 1080p?

Ask him if you could test his GPU on your PC (or yours on his), after trying 3 of these, I'm not sure if it is the card's fault.

This.

Wrong. I was at my friends home and he was playing CoD with something like 120fps and my ear was 4-5cm away from his Gigabyte GTX970 and there was no buzzing!

Well, it depends on the game also. The more force is on the card, the louder it'll buzz. COD probably uses 20% of the ressources. And with a different PSU or a louder system overall and your perception focused on a specific noise, it may have seemd silent to you. But rest assured, it isn't.

You could try his PSU though.

Just using my Zotac 970 here.. has anyone seen any lockups in BF4 where everything gets really really slow and then the computer locks up? Is that the graphics card, or something related to BF4 you think? It almost feels like a memory leak or something. Next time it occurs I'll try to ctrl+alt+del and see if it's the case. I do run a fair bit of stuff in the background, and my iSpy camera system has had memory leaks in the past..

EDIT: Crap.. I can't check yet, but I bet it's 'Origin in Game' re-enabling itself after a software update. It seems to be the culprit a lot of the time.

Nice. I have a 2500k too. What games are you using DSR in?

I have been using it in pretty much every PC version of last gen console games, with a lot of them running at 4k at 60fps. I play a lot of Diablo 3 and am running it at 4k now which is great since I no longer have to use the incredibly blurry in-game AA. For more graphic intensive current games like Shadow of Mordor, I have just been running at 1080p with everything on ultra (except textures) and locked to 60fps.

Ziiiuuuiiiiuuzzrrrrr that you can hear from 4-5 meters. I have good ears (also an expensive audio setup) and it's a no-go for me because it's fucking annoying. It's worse than the worst plasma TV coil whine.

that's why you dont buy Gigatbyte. Every gigabyte card in the past I owned had coil whine. Then I switched to ASUS and it was all good.

I have always RMAed cards with excessive coil whine and have always done so until I get one that has none when operating under synthetic loads.

They do exist. My HD5850 was completely inaudible and so is my brother's R9 290. Having a card buzz and whine louder than any system noise is unacceptable in my books, especially when it's advertised as quiet most of the time.

Has anyone heard anything about new drivers from Nvidia? Last driver was 9/23. Meanwhile Dead Rising 3, Shadows of Mordor, Ryse, Evil Within, FF13, etc have all been release. We really could use some performance increase and SLI profiles. On the Steam forum the developer of Ryse said they have a SLI ready, but it's up to Nvidia to release it.

Any opinions on upgrading from a HD 5870 1GB to a 970 when I've only got an i5 760 OC'd @ 3.8hz (could probably push it a bit higher)? Really feeling the effects of the limited VRAM when I can't use higher than medium textures in a few games. The way my situation is right now I either can upgrade to a 970 or wait many years before I build a completely new PC.

Based on this chart: http://forum.zwame.pt/threads/teste-cpu-nuclearus-multi-core-tabela-com-resultados-no-1-post.780113/ my CPU is at roughly the performance of a stock i5 4670?

What would you guys do in this situation? You think my CPU will bottleneck this card?

You're good, go for it.

Do it. I'm thrilled with the performance coupled with my i7 920.

Yeah, but let's not pretend the i5-760 is in the same league as the 920. The 920 has hyperthreading and the power of the x58 platform behind it.

Anandtech just stopped working for whatever reason, but if you check out AT Bench once it's back up you'll find that the 760 and 920 are actually really close in performance.

goddammit i just ordered a gigabyte gtx 970 g1 gaming and now i'm hearing that it doesn't fit my Zalman z11 case?? wtf...

It actually is. Lynnfield performs similarly to Nehalem. Hyperthreading is only beneficial if programs are particularly well threaded. The chipset is meaningless for 99% of people.

I just noticed in the OP, the Excellent and above builds have 16GB Ram...

Will there be a noticeable difference with the current crop of games (and next year's games) if I have 8GB? I'm building a system but I want to keep costs down. I'd rather get the Ram next year if I can hold off.

Also is the 1600Mhz v 1866Mhz much different in everyday use and gaming? It's another $30 for me.

Also I'm going with an i5 4690k and GTX970 so I don't really want a ram bottleneck...

EDIT - ah shit - wrong thread :(

Hah. I had a Radeon R290 reference model in a completely stock (no XMP, no uptuning of any sort) desktop. Dead Rising 3 killed the card (or, the card finally died of inadequate integrated cooling). It was a great card while it worked, but it always ran insanely hot - 88+C under load.

I finally caved after reading about the 970, and I bought the cheapest version available on Newegg EDIT: Zotec/Zotac (not sure) standard card.

This thing is great. Firstly, it confirms that it wasn't my case or system that caused the Radeon to overheat to death - this card never breaks 70C running things like Ryse at 1.5x1080p downscaled. It's so small! You could fit this in a much more compact case than what you are used to for most "gaming" GPUs. It's about 1.5in shorter than my old 770.

TLDR: GeForce 970 is great compared to Radeon R290 stock and GeForce 770GTX. It's also a much better value proposition than the 770GTX was at availability.

Did you read this thread? It's been mentioned about 900 times here how long that card is.

yeah totally my mistake there. Thankfully i was able to just cancel my order again. I knew about the length of the cards but i was under the false impression that my case was big enough anyway. Sucks for me.

i'm not sure about buying a 970 from another manufacturer tbh. My current 660 ti is from Gigabyte and so was my 460. Never had a bad experience and they always seemed like the best in class in terms of OC and temperature.

I was already skeptical about buying this one just because of all the reports of coil whine. Now i know it can always happen anyway but the 970 seem to have a unusual amount of complaints in that department.

I'm now wondering if i should just stick with my 660 until the next series comes out.. that Witcher 3 though..

The RAM speed actually helps now on Haswell, but 1866Mhz should only be like $5 more for the decent RAM. 8GB is fine if you aren't multitasking a lot at the same time, games don't use more than that.

Grabbed an EVGA 970 SC ACX 2.0. I had to drop by Fry's to pick up some other stuff and it was their last model in stock! Hope I don't run into any issues...

Thanks. And it was $15 more for the 1866hz not $30... im in Malaysia and ive only got a couple of shops that post their online price lists to go by... there's a big plaza with lots of computer shops but still I'd rather just go to the trusted outlets as I'm new here.

Also this might be a question for the GTX970 thread but I'll ask it here anyway... There's a $50 gap between the normal Zotac($425) and the Zotac amp ($475) 10% core clock faster. It says that the normal Zotac can boost fro 1000Mhz to 1200Mhz, do I need to buy any cooling or fans to do the overclock? I want to save the $50 if I can, whats the point of getting the dearer version, is it just to save the hassle of overclocking myself?

The AMP version has a much better cooling solution and upgraded power delivery system.

I felt a significant increase on a GTX 680 (I'm on a 2x 780 now) in smoothness, minimum framerates, and in many cases average and maximum framerates going from an i7 920 @ 4Ghz to a i7 4770K at stock speeds. But the primary improvement was overall smoothness and minimum framerates. I felt my i7 920 was fine even as I was buying the upgrade to the 4770K right up until I actually felt the difference for myself.

The benchmarks don't really tell the whole story, especially non-game based ones. You'll be fine, but don't be fooled into thinking you're getting the most out of your card on that CPU.

And with an i5 2500k at 4.1 ghz?

So i posted about this before (got no answer, since probably i'm the only one here with this problem):
My audio keeps going out of sync after a while, when i'm using my TV through HDMI.
It seems to be fine on the monitor (DVI) instead.

Basically it's fine when i first activate that screen, but after a while (let's say an hour or even less) the audio is delayed, and i can't understand what's causing it.
So far the only way to solve it is to transfer the image back to the monitor, and then back again to the TV, and it's in sync again (until it's not).

I googled a lot, but i can't find anyone with a similar problem, and it's something i didn't have with my 780, only since i got the 970.
I also tried reinstalling the latest drivers again, but it still does it.

Who should i even contact for this? Nvidia or Gigabyte?

Thanks. Was thinking the same with 770s 4gb vram. Though leaning towards Ti or 1080.
Are you running 120hz monitor? FPS aside, does it feel smoother?
No just a 1080p 70hz monitor. Yes games do feel smoother, I'm a huge Skyrim mod fan and a single 980 is giving me over double the performance. Games that stuttered are smoother, Shadow of Mordormwas unplayable at ultra settings before and now is smooth.

My Gigabyte 970 had been great with no problems until today when I was trying to continue the Evil Within I noticed I was only getting 20 fps so I closed it. I ran fire strike, and the afterburner on screen display showed around 50% usage but in the program monitor itself it showed gpu usage at 100%.

Tried out watch dogs and got the same thing with it saying 50% in the on screen and 100% in afterburner. II don't know what's wrong. All in all my fire strike score is now about half of where I had it, in the 4000's when they were above 9000 before.
Guess I'm might have to return it, was having fun with Evil Within too :/
Here are the different fire strike results compared to each other.

I have SLI 970s. Afterburner says that Borderlands The Pre-Sequel is using 40% of GPU1 and 50% of GPU2, but I still get frame drops.

Why isn't it using 100% of both? I could put PhysX up to Ultra if it did...

Is their a proper profile for SLi? Try a single card and see how performance is with just it.

I sold my PS4 a few days ago to buy a PC. As soon as I can get my hands on one of these 8gb bad boys I'll be putting a nice compact rig together and a 4k tv to boot.

Are you runnig with Vsync off? If no, there's your answer. The game doesn't push enough fps to use more GPU power. If no, doesn't have proper SLI profile. Try using another compatibility bit SLI profile.

Ah ok guess I need to do some more research... again...
Just be mindful that all the Zotac's are currently power/voltage limited to some degree right now. In fact, I don't think a voltage bump is even possible with the current BIOS. This is likely to change soon. That being said, I'm getting 1450MHz core out of my vanilla 970 even with the 106% PL and a fluctuating voltage that won't even stay at the board max. It's still an awesome card. My temps are great too.

It's a pain to search 122 pages of this thread for people with similar systems to compare results, let me know if these are good numbers.

Everything is stock (well, stock overclocked on the 980s)

I'll start OCing stuff once I get my new power supply. Running on an older Corsair TX950 currently.

It's a decent PSU but isn't modular and a pain to work with.

Ugh, think I'm going to have to return one of my MSIs to Amazon for an exchange. Pretty sure the factory OC is unstable. Getting all sorts of artifacts while playing.

Does selecting "prefer maximum performance" in the Nvidia control panel make any difference?
