Tear gas and pepper spray hung in the air as police in riot gear descended on Keene, New Hampshire, on Saturday night, trying to disperse a rowdy crowd that brought chaos to the city's 24th annual Pumpkin Festival, CNN affiliates reported.

"State and local public safety officials are on the scene and have been working closely together to defuse the situation," Gov. Maggie Hassan said a statement. "We will continue to monitor the situation and provide any assistance necessary to Keene."

Bonfires burned into the early hours of Sunday morning on city streets that were littered with broken beer and liquor bottles, video from CNN affiliate WMUR showed.

"I am saddened and disheartened at the events surrounding this year's Keene Pumpkin Festival," said Keene State College President Anne Huot. "Despite the concerted efforts of organizers, city officials, police, and Keene State College, there continued to be disruptive behavior at parties in multiple locations around the city, injuries, and property damage."

Huot said Keene State students bore some of the responsibility for the unruly behavior, but also suggested that some outside the community had billed the event "as a destination for destructive and raucous behavior."

Authorities weren't able to provide exact figures, but CNN affiliates reported dozens of arrests and the Southwest New Hampshire Mutual Aid Dispatch Center reported multiple ambulances being sent to the scene.

"I got hit with a Jack Daniel's bottle, like across the face," Keene State student Roger Creekmore told WMUR.

Steven French, 18, who was visiting from Haverhill, Massachusetts, described the chaotic scene to the local paper, The Keene Sentinel, as "wicked."

"It's just like a rush. You're revolting from the cops," he told the paper Saturday night. "It's a blast to do things that you're not supposed to do."

Other young people shouted expletives at police, started fires in the road, pulled down a street sign and apparently tried to flip over a Subaru, the Sentinel said.

Because of arrests (140 last year, the Sentinel reported) and injuries at past festivals, the community has held forums in recent years -- inviting police and emergency room doctors as well as residents -- to explore ways to mitigate the violence, vandalism and littering that come with the celebration.

The pumpkin festival is a source of pride for the community of 23,000 people about 80 miles northwest of Boston. Last year, the event set a world record with 30,581 lit jack-o'-lanterns, according to the festival's website.

"It's ridiculous. It's not Pumpkin Fest," Jacob Gowans, another Keene State student, told WMUR. "We're supposed to have a fun weekend. This is stupid."

Normal people don't rob and destroy the property of others just trying to get by... They're just using this festival as an excuse to destroy stuff thinking they'll get off scot free because its all fun. It's completely unjustifiable.

What a shithead. He is still young though, in that rebellious age.

Did you put "unruly thugs" in the thread title because this was mostly (at least from the video) suburban white kids and you were trying to be ironic?

If so, that's incredibly lame and I'm a bit tempted to puke.

Had family post about this on social media Sunday. It seems a bunch of students came out to help clean up the mess.

Ironically John Oliver used Keene as an example of ridiculous Police Militerization becuse they got a god damn Bearcat and mentioned specifically this Pumpkin Festival in justifying the acquisition.

Huh? Why can't suburban white kids be thugs? Thug refers to behaviour, not race.

Wasn't this pumpkin festival the one John Oliver made fun of for the police wanting armored vehicles for security purposes?

I feel like it's naive to assume there aren't ulterior motives here.

DreamDrop is a fairly consistent poster in the Black Culture thread and other threads about race issues. Also, articles generally portray groups of black youths as "unruly thugs" or other similar terms. It seems like he's trying to make a statement about racism in the US by calling a mob of white suburban kids "unruly thugs" to be ironic. Why would a poster who is so sensitive to racial issues use a term like that unless there was some other kind of motive? Surely he wouldn't appreciate it if the same term was applied to young black people. This thread isn't the worst thing ever, I just called it out for being fairly eye roll-worthy.

Do you have a problem with the unruly or the thugs?

I came into this thread thinking it would be about more black dudes getting arrested for no reason and the thread title was a joke.

despite the damage caused, the fact that a pumpkin festival ended in mayhem is hilarious to me.

That's the exact point I made a couple days ago when someone else posted about Keene. I still don't think Keene needs the armored vehicle.

Looks like some people need to open a damn dictionary and look up the word "thug."

Also these assholes are pathetic. People who flip cars/break shit just because it's fun derserve to be castrated.

I mean... so what if its his intention? Not sure why its such an issue to you.

Next time you have a problem with anything, I'll ask you the same question.

I don't care about the term at all, just seems like you created this thread with a really obvious agenda. If you want to talk about racial issues, you could create a thread about it and I'm sure many would sympathize. GAF has a progressive community second to none despite what some would claim to the contrary. This thread just evokes the "wah wah wah" sad trumpet noise. It would be great if more people could be direct and just discuss stuff freely without resorting to irony or sarcasm.

Fucking asshole thugs

We all know what that's code for...

Loving these posts :-)

You are angry about something that has context in our current society in America. Calling out double standards in how we describe our unruly or wild youth is what we do. It's what we SHOULD do.

And for you to be offended is laughable.

So, basically, you made an assumption about me and then got upset about your assumption and call me out based on that assumption.

Probably because it usually is applied to young black people, and it doesn't carry the same offensiveness/context when used towards a white person? Come on, dude.

It's not that the OP did it, it's how he did it. Also I'm not that angry I was mainly joking, unless you really think this thread was going to make me throw up.

I really don't feel like wasting my time in this thread arguing with the same couple people over nothing at all, so I'll leave you guys to the rousing discussion of racism and double standards in America.

I don't think you're expressing yourself very clearly here. I'm positive you don't think the word "thug" is another term for a black person, yet you're objecting when someone tries to use that word for white people.

Good luck with that.
