iOS Gaming October 2014: We didn't even know this was releasing on iOS

I'm looking for a nice offline action game that I can play longterm and that has hopefully been optimised for iPhone 6.

Any suggestions?

It's weird how some posts by developers about their new games feel natural, and others make me feel like I just stumbled on a paid advertisement.
Tell me about it.

Not to be rude to the devs who might be reading this, but if you're going to post here, post as a fellow forum member, not like you're sending a press release to another site.

What kind of action? Hack n slash, shooter, etc?

Just general recommendations (not sure if optimized for 6 though): Bastion, Inferno 2, Crimsonland, pretty much anything by Foursaken (Bug Heroes 2, Block Fortress, Heroes & Castles, Phantom Rift)

For anyone using iTunes, I highly recommend updating to version 12 that just came out. It's much much faster than 11 on both Windows and Yosemite (it's crazy the Windows version is actually snappy!).

Downloading now, but it'll ruin my nice streak of blue icons.

sorry if my post looked like and advertisement, but I was not my intention at all. Anyway I just fixed it to look more natural.

Don't mind the type of action. I'm into Cave shooters, Shadow Blade. But I'm currently hooked on Boom Beach but that is online with time restrictions. Are the games you suggested updated for iPhone 6?

I beat you all have stopped playing Tiny Tower Vegas. HAVEN'T YOU?????

Anyways, I'm up to 37 floors. I'm not sure how much longer I'm going to play this either. The halloween update is annoying me. When it asks me to find guests, its kinda broken in that not all guests dressed as the objective qualify for the tasks. It asks me to find 3 ghosts and they might be a dozen in the tower but most of them are just background animation. i hope they fixed this for the next holiday themed update.

up to floor 30. kinda bored, but its lite enough that i can still come back to every half day or so without an issue.

I still play, and enjoy it. I bought the chip pack when the half-price offer came up. I've played a lot of NimbleBit games, and in most I end up buying some sort of IAP to support the game. Unfortunately, that same day, ad offers started crashing the game every time.

I still haven't turned off the music in the game, which is weird because I've done that with all their previous games after a few days. I must really like hotel/casino muzak. 35 levels in, and I'll probably keep it up until something either completely breaks the game, or I finish it. The only difference between how I play now and about a week ago is that more of my time is going towards Terra Battle.

Another game for SRPG fans

Rime Berta (I didn't know this was releasing on IOS!)
NZ link: https://itunes.apple.com/nz/app/rime-berta/id882344717

Going to be $4.99. That's a fantastic deal; the PC version is $15
This is a 2.5D TRPG in which players have a diagonal overview of gameplay.
The map is in 3D, and characters are rendered in the nostalgic "pixel art" style.
On your turn, tap your unit and select either move, attack, or standby to continue the battle.

*Over 100 different skills
Master swords, daggers, spears, bows, magic attacks, recovery magic, support magic, traps, and other various skills to give you the advantage in battle!
During your opponents turn, invoking reaction skills is the key to victory!

*More than 20 different classes
As your skill level increases, you can change to a higher class!
Whether you advance into a simple evolutionary class or a tricky class is up to you.

*Story
In the remote village of Sandy there lived a girl named Livia. In an attempt to cure a widespread disease, she climbs a huge tower where a "secret treasure that grants wishes" is said to sleep.
On her way she finds a small resident "puppet" who accompanies her onward.
Inside the tower there are grassy plains and deserts, high mountains, and other mysterious, magical entities.
As she walks, wild puppets begin to attack...
What in the world is on the roof of this tower...?
*The conversation scenes have full voice overs!

Reviews of PC version aren't great. For $5 you guys should just get the best original IOS SRPG (Tactics Maiden). :)

Yeah, looks good but, damn, pretty harsh reviews (although only two on Metacritic so far both giving it 4/10)

Although I haven't played Tactics Maiden, I'd also strongly recommend Banner Saga for an extra $5. It's not just the best SRPG I've played on iOS, it'll likely be near or at the top of my GOTY list as well as my all time favorites list.

So has anyone started thinking about their favorite IOS games of 2014 yet? It's almost that time of the year

Right now, I'd say my list would include:
  • 80 Days
  • Monument Valley
  • Sky Force
  • Smash Hit
  • Wayward Souls
  • Perfect Paths
  • Kiwanuka
  • Battleheart Legacy
  • Hitman Go
  • The Nightmare Cooperative
  • Threes
  • Inferno 2
  • Kero Blaster
  • 99 Bricks
  • Tap Lander
  • Bug Heroes 2
  • CLARC
  • Biosis
  • Primal Flame
  • Instantion
I think I might have to narrow that down just a little bit...

Holy cow, I'm really digging Deep Dungeons of Doom now. Totally awesome pixel art and Bossa's sense of humor flows through the writing.

A really good rougelike with tons of content.

Right now, I'd say my list would include:
  • wayward souls
  • Monument valley
  • 80 days
  • Wolf among us(don't care played on iOS so I'm putting it here)
  • Hearthstone
  • Valiant hearts
  • Fates forever
  • Battleheart legacy

This list is subject to change as there are still a couple games coming out soon that might make my list. (If Simogo are able to get The Sailor's dream out by the end of the year then I can almost guarantee it will make my list.)

Pretty nice list! I know I'd include a bunch of those. Also would add Battleheart: Legacy and maybe even Skulldrugery, as one of the most inventive platformers I've played in a long time. Lone Wolf is also great -- considering I'm not a huge fan of Gamebooks.

And, as you probably have already read, Banner Saga is going to be hard to beat for me. I suppose you don't like SRPGs? Just the whole level of polish, detail, story and gameplay are amazing and raise iOS gaming to a whole new level for me (more so than half assed attempts to port "big" games like Bioshock).

Oh, almost forgot about VVVVVV, another stellar port. Even Traps and Gemstones is a great Metroidvania game.

Really has been an outstanding year for mobile gaming.

Battleheart actually released in December, that's why I didn't include it there.

Is this your first time playing The Banner Saga? It really is an incredibly well done port, up there with FTL.

Actually, Battleheart: Legacy didn't come out until May 2014. If you're looking at the release notes, the 1.0 version was December but it wasn't actually released until May (the 1.1 version says basically "finalized for release") on May 23). Review sites confirm that. Just wanted to double check myself.

As for Banner Saga, yeah, this is my first play through and even plan to double dip on Android when it's released to play on a bigger tablet screen.

Ah, I was going by the Version History on the App Store

Damn, we had one hell of a year for IOS gaming. And the year isn't even over yet, so who knows what else could be releasing

For me, 80 Days, Wayward Souls and Monument Valley are the best of iOS 2014.
Banner Saga is a brilliant port but I already gave it best PC Game last year. I'd like to give other games a chance.

ios gaming year is like dog years.

too many stuff that you look back and think, wait this came out THIS YEAR?
Thing about IOS is that stuff just releases, no rhyme or reason. Go on Steam or consoles, and you can have an idea what's coming out months in advance. IOS? Games can release without warning, some get pre-release hype and publicize their release date but many just come out with little news ahead of time

I need to get 80 Days. Might wait on the Android port (which was teased a few weeks ago on Twitter so I'm thinking it won't be long).

My 6 Plus is scheduled for delivery on Wednesday. So far I've got these games in my queue:

Knights of the Old Republic
Micromon
Angry Birds Transformers
Daddy Long Legs
Game Dev Story
He-Man
Infinity Blade Trilogy
Terra Battle

Thinking about picking up Hitman Go, Final Fantasy VI, and DQIV, but I think I'll wait for a sale on those. Any gems optimized for the 6 Plus I should look for. Seems like a lot of games haven't been optimized for it yet judging by app reviews.

80 days is amazing, but I can't help but find myself taking the same routes on subsequent playthroughs and making the same decisions based on what I know from previous runs. I should be more adventurous but it seems stupid to go in a direction other than "the most east I can go"

So has anyone started thinking about their favorite IOS games of 2014 yet? It's almost that time of the year

I been thinking on that subject for a while now, though call...

Out There
Puzzle to the Center of the Earth
Tilt to Live: Gauntlet Revenge
Deep Dungeons of Doom
Traps n Gemstones
They Need to be Fed 3
Inferno 2
Nightmare Cooperative
Kero Blaster
VVVVVV
Threes
99 Bricks
ALONE
80 Days
Darkin
Time Tangle
Edit: Crap, forgot to add Monument Valley here.
Edit 2: Crap again, I forgot Glorkian Warrior: Trials of Glork

Some will not make it, other could appear but I am pretty sure Out There will win this for me.

When is that Advance Wars game coming out? I feel like it was announced a lifetime ago.

EDIT:
Nevermind-here's the site:

http://riskylab.com/warbits/

No update. I doubt it's ever coming out.

They are testing it on iPads now, soon to start with iPhones... and I am there ready to start :D (but Ill probably wont come out this year)

Damn, we had one hell of a year for IOS gaming. And the year isn't even over yet, so who knows what else could be releasing

Many many cool games I can say safely, tomorrow we will see the first two: Tilt to Live Gauntlet Revenge, which is brilliant and awesome at the same time and Puzzle to the Center of the Earth, something else, been completely addicted to this for a month now, in love with it. I love both. Both will end in my GotY 2014 List. Then in a few weeks we should have another big title I can't speak about now, and so on. I love beta testing stuff and sending a ton of emails with feedback. A ton of them.

I'd have to go the opposite direction. To me? 2014 was the year I mostly fell out of love with ios gaming. There just hasn't been anything that has grabbed my attention and I haven't even purchased much lately to try it.

Just one of those cycle things I suppose. FTL was amazing (that was this year right?) but I had also played lots of it before. The Room 3 might change that (new screens btw http://www.fireproofgames.com/news), but it'll also probably be more of the same... which is nice, but I'm starting to feel I've see everything the platform has to offer and want something fresh.

The one exception to all that is Hearthstone, which I still play today. It isn't just my ios GOTY so far, but I can't really think of any game that beats it fullstop.

Not sure of you are serious or not. Boom Beach to me represents absolutely everything I despise in games. Have all the ingredients I wish to be gone. :P

Serious. This game has sapped more of my time this year than any other game on iOS. I haven't forked out any money on it but yes, 30 minute wait times are bad.

I would have to agree with you, I pop into these threads to see what's new but am always disappointed by the stuff I try. Even the games that I enjoy don't hook me, like 80 Days, which was fun once through but didn't really get me itching for another go.

That said, I'm really enjoying Helix by Michael Brough.

I've played Clash of CLans for 18 months now without spending. Can't really get motivated to start playing Boom Beach though, even though I've had it on my phone for months.

Puzzle to the Center of the Earth this week?! Awesome, new Foursaken is always an instant purchase for me

Ugh, I understand. Monument Valley is my favourite iOS game this year, but my most played would either be Deer Hunter '14 or, gulp, 'Motor World'. I won't ever admit to playing Motor World again though, and this post is primed to self-destruct.

But are we enjoying ourselves with these games?

But are we enjoying ourselves with these games?
Yeah, I think so. I wouldn't keep playing 'em if I wasn't. It's easy to deal with freemium limits when you're only picking a game up for five minutes at a time.

I do feel guilty pressing 'Motor World' when I've got the Phoenix Wright trilogy and Ghost Trick sitting right next to it though.

After being sour with angry birds epic and bored of the regular angry birds games I nearly passed up on transformers but man, it's really cool, good throwback to my younger days and I love the music and style the game has overall.

Oh the kart game was ok but felt way too limited, I even own two telepods but the app doesn't remember uses every time you close it...

Good for you I guess.

It will be free to play, with an option to buy an IAP that removes the energy system entirely making it premium-ish (I can assure most of the other IAP are basically cheats). Wish Adventure Xpress did this. Its a win-win situation for both customers and developers. You guys are in for a gaming treat with Puzzle to the Center of the Earth (and Gauntlet Revenge also).

After the massive Fruit Ninja update from 3 weeks ago, we've updated it once more for Halloween! A crossover with Ghostbusters!

See the trailer here

The game's got some Ghostbusters flavour in it for a while. You wouldn't really expect the two to cross over all that well, but the team did an amazing job with it.

In it you get a free blade and background - Proton Pack Blade that can can "cross the streams" once a game, and a themed background that throws up Ghost Traps filled with fruit.
