Valkyria Chronicles for PC [Nov 11, £14/20/$20, has all DLC, 60fps/1080p+, $14 GMG]

I have it for ps3 but lost my game save. Unsure if I want to rebuy on PC.

If they brought over the second one I would get both.

Maybe this opens the gates to PS4 version (with trophies!). I got PS3 version but I would so like to play this in PS4 too. What a great game, maybe Iam purchasing this to my PC (laptop) too.

Porting from PC to PS4 should not be too hard, question is if SEGA is going to try. I will say that if they do then it pretty much confirms a VC4 because why else would they be reviving this franchise out of nowhere. I might be optimistic but come on SEGA!

Actually, leveling up does matter, especially in that tank mission where you can't afford to miss shots due to low level RNG accuracy.

I missed like 3 shots at point blank range because of that crappy tank and some low level lancers.

On a side note, I would like to see resonance of fate (ph8) on PC too.

It does matter, but it's not exactly necessary. I'm not sure if I levelled up my Lancers for that battle.

The reason SEGA told the PS3 community that VC would never get trophies was because they didn't want to re-open the code. Obviously with the port that wasn't the case. As a huge VC fan, it just hurts...

There's a big difference between going back to the code to add trophies for people who already bought the game and to go back to port it for a whole new audience.

While it wasn't my favourite game, it was definitely one of the more interesting franchises that came out of last generation. I'm glad they listened and hope they find an audience on PC. PC has always been a blind spot for Japanese developers, so I'm glad that they're slowly coming around to it.

Those who havent played it yet be prepared for the game to take an interesting game mechanic shift early on. It turns into a rush fest more than actually strategy :(

I figured that out right after replaying the first missions to get an A rank. I knew the game had standardized routes and strategies, but scouts are obviously overpowered.

I still tried to use strategies and play methodically in every new mission though; it is more fun as well.

Rush strategy campaign is boring as fuck. I'll never do it again.

Loved this game. I cried when sequels were only on PSP. The anime was cool.

Thats amazing news, more success the game and series gets the better. Valkryia Chronicles in one of the best PS3 games and i completed it about 5 times, if they ever released a trophy patch i'd get right back in there.

Enjoy PC owers

It is a charming strategy title.

The thing that makes it special are the little touches. For example every unit in the game has a little bit of backstory and a bit of personality to them. One character might perform better when they are near girls, another might perform worse. Some people perform poorly under pressure and miss shots, some people always deliver for you.
Combined with the art-style, it all feels so "alive" that you forgive the games many shortcomings and enjoy the experience.

The shortcomings? Well there are a few things you need to be prepared for...

Firstly the game is incredibly poorly balanced. A few missions are hard the first time, but once you work out the "Tactics" it is basically broken in terms of challenge and scoring.

It is anime. It is "good anime" if you know what I mean, but you still get things like a cute pig mascot thing that keeps popping up. There is a beach scene and a magical girl with giant breasts. You need to be able to deal with this.
The story is nice enough, but doesn't make a huge amount of sense. You need to just kind of roll with it all.

Mechanically, there are several flaws which were fixed in later games. For example larger maps have no way to advance your back units, besides manually moving them forward one by one or returning all the way back to base. This encourages you to use broken tactics, because it is otherwise a pain.

What all this adds up to will depend on how engrossed you get into it. I loved it, flaws and all so I think it is certainly worth at least trying.

<insert please don't buy from Russian keys, actually support Sega rant here>

My interest is very piqued. Sounds a bit like Jagged Alliance or X-Com (the original iterations) which I loved.

It does take time. As your cast gets larger, you get more options in battle, the maps widen and their personalities start to come through.

You'll develop favourites, which are the people you can rely on and want to protect. You'll also have people you throw into the thick of it because you are not too fussed on them. Sometimes they'll pull through anyway.

I can see a lot of people not liking it, but if you let it in it'll eventually grab you.

Also, death is permanent, which influences individual stories. It really sucks when one of your favorite characters dies after so many close calls.

You don't have to rush, but ranking A helps rack up a lot more experience for your squad. There's a balance to be found; doing one save for story progression (A-ranking the way through) and one for experimenting/beating missions with style can help.

Don't. Just don't. Don't do this to me. Do not speak these words. I would die. Even the PC version news is too much for my weak little heart to take. This was my GOTG before The Last of Us.

I'm curious about the recommended specs. The game was already gorgeous and a presentation that some would probably like to leave unchanged (myself included) on the old PS3 hardware. Is the search for 1080/60/ultra going to give the thing a high entry bar? The game at around the PS3 version quality should be relatively easy for a modern PC with decent internal graphics but I doubt that's an intended playing experience.
Can you reset like in Fire Emblem ?
You could always load last save, but, meh. Everyone comes back in a NG+ cycle (I think I'm remembering this properly) and then they're also available for skirmishes/experimenting.

Permadeath is there in the game.

There's one side character who's in love with the main girl in the game. Got pretty upset when he died so I had to start over. They give little bits of dialogue that really gives their character some meaning and motivation.

It's funny, because most of the cast is interchangeable, but I found myself using the same characters over and over since I got attached to them.

As a PC only guy who has never heard of this game, tell me why I should be excited about this (not trolling, genuinely curious).

Let me quote (part of) the original OT:

  • "Valkyria Chronicles is an amazing experience. It’s rare, these days, that a game can make such a huge departure from its genre’s roots and yet keep the best things about it. It revolutionizes strategy RPGs in such a way that it can be appealing to fans of the subgenre, newcomers, and perhaps even sworn-off non-fans of it."(RPGLand, 10/10)
  • "Unlike many tactical games, Valkyria Chronicles requires tactics. Gloriously, however, it does not confine the player to figuring out a single pattern or strategy per mission."
  • "The characters are excellently developed, likeable, well-acted and well-scripted. While scattered elements of these will be labeled as cliche, the plot is executed well, the story is very enjoyable, the cast is quite likeable, and all of the above feel extra fresh because of the unique setting and scenario."
  • "Another thing Valkyria has going on for it is challenge. Even in the first playthrough when “Normal” is the highest difficulty available for a given battle, this is a legitimately difficult game."
    -
  • "The best thing about Valkyria is the way the game gets better the more you play it. As you progress through your first play through, unlocking improved weapons, character classes, command options, and skirmishes, you'll really start to bond with your squad as the solid story sucks you in."
  • "Valkyria offers some of the most fun and rewarding game mechanics I have experienced in recent memory. It's an addictive game thanks to its depth and variety."
  • "Though the story takes a purposefully narrow focus on Welkin's platoon and the relationships between its members, it never gets too melodramatic or clichéd. There is a lot of heart and humor, and the optional stories and side quests add to the depth of each character."
    -
  • "Valkyria Chronicles is a truly magnificent outing for Sega. It dares to be different, it scoffs at genre conventions and finds its own path, and in doing so succeeds brilliantly as both a deep strategy experience and a wonderfully story-driven RPG."
  • "Yet patient players will be rewarded: the story is quite charming and deftly told despite needing to support a hefty cast of characters each with their own journeys to take. Better, the art direction is exquisite, with its watercolour and pencil techniques conveying a pastoral romance to proceedings that contrasts poignantly with the machinery of war."
  • "What's truly gratifying about each battle is that it feels like you emerge victorious because you made some smart decisions and adapted your strategy to the situation. Battlefields start small and confined in the early chapters, but soon open up into expansive fields brimming with tactical opportunity via an assortment of criss-crossing paths, back alleys, sniper towers and various war-torn debris."
    -
  • "But, honestly, this is so innovative and so polished a game that if you pass it up, the real moron is you." (1UP, A-)
  • "Like most of you, I wear my socks firmly ensconced within a pair of sneakers, which are themselves strapped tightly to my feet with strong, cordlike shoelaces. Imagine my disappointment in my footwear-securing preparations, then, when Valkyria Chronicles knocked those same socks clean off my feet. This is, without question, the best tactics game on the PS3 -- and it's one of the best games on PS3, period."
    -
  • "Valkyria Chronicles is a excellent game, the way that the story and action fuse together is very impressive, as is the overall presentation. It looks fantastic, plays well and tells a wonderful story of one countries fight for survival against the odds. This is one game I would highly recommend for any PS3 owner looking for something different." (Wonderwallweb, 8.9)
  • "Valkyria Chronicles is a sleeper hit, and a must for any strategy nut."
    -
  • "There are some things you never knew you wanted in a strategy game. The third-person view does wonders to get you invested in every decision, and it’s great to have a worthwhile story. The gorgeous presentation and versatile combat make Valkyria Chronicles one of the best surprises of the year. It may not have been on your radar before, but you definitely shouldn’t let it pass you by." (Game Informer, 8.5 and 8.75)
  • "It doesn’t have sprites or grid-based combat, but Valkyria Chronicles is pure strategic bliss. Sometimes it looks like a third-person shooter. At other moments, it appears to be about tank combat. You interact with and control your units in unconventional ways, but these mechanics are all just skins overlaying a classic and familiar strategy framework that puts players in the trenches like no other entry in the genre."
    -
  • "Having seen the game in action some time ago, we expected something visually stunning, but we were impressed by the strength of the game's storyline and gameplay. It's easily one of the best looking games we've played this year, but thankfully there's plenty of strategic depth and engrossing gameplay to back it up." (GameSpy, 4.5/5)
  • "While many role-playing games feature paper-thin characters that are barely worth listening to, these scenes are as enjoyable as the gameplay thanks to the charming characters."
    -
  • "Valkyria Chronicles is truly a genre defining, revolutionary new take on the RPG genre. Even viewed as a strategy RPG, it’s excitingly and stunningly fresh, and manages to stand out from the crowd not only by being different but by having an interesting story and beautiful graphics. It might be different, and it might not follow the strict RPG rules to the letter – but give it a try. You might well find the change is long overdue." (RPGSite, 94/100)

You have to mess up really badly to see permadeath in this game. Permadeath is about as relevant to this game as it is in FFT, it's not like Fire Emblem or XCOM. There's no real penalty for death in this game.

The
Selvaria battle right after the tank
got me pretty good a couple of times.

Did this just come out of nowhere? I haven't heard any rumours or anything and PS3 only releases rarely make it to PC.

Whoa. Did not expect this, at all. Definitely, absolutely, totally in though.

Please please please be a good port and not this resolution/framerate locked nonsense with zero options. Sega does PC games, they should know.

Yes, but you get three turns to rescue units or use an order before they die. And story characters are immune to permadeath altogether.

If the enemy comes across their unconscious body, then your soldier dies.

Permadeath occurred only once or twice for me, though. So it's not that big of a deal.

It came totally out of nowhere, that's what makes it so awesome.

Of course, if you think about it, Sega porting the best game they made in the past decade which is also a perfect fit for PC to PC makes perfect sense. But that's just another reason not to expect it.
