edit2: Costume Quest 2 missing Off-TV is pretty shitty.
Wait what? This is a real deal breaker for me, totally unacceptable.

I guess it shouldn't be too big a surprise since Doublefine's last eShop game (The Cave) also senselessly skipped off-tv play but that was a rushed near launch game so I'd hoped they'd had some better project planning this time around. I guess not.

To Indie Devs... No Off-Tv Play = No Buy
(Unless, there is an actual gameplay mechanic that requires the gamepad.)
Coincidentally, I did not buy The Cave for the same reason.

Not to defend, but that games would have been nigh on impossible with the GamePad given you have to control three characters.

Why? All it had was a quick select on the touch screen. It's also on iOS. There's no real excuse for this except "we didn't know how/have time/money to try."

In related news I'm still waiting on those promised off-tv play patches for X-Type+ and 1001 Spikes, as well as the sound fix patch for Ittle Dew. Where are they?

You don't control them all at once. All it was was a switch to different character. Could of easily been added to the d-pad switch.

Here's the thing. The game is basically unplayable in Single Player, IMO. Maybe I just lack patience (this surely wouldn't be the first evidence for that theory), but even playing The Cave in co-op with me using the GamePad and my wife using the Wiimote + Nunchuk, it was quite tedious to switch between two characters in different parts of large maps, especially when you have to sync up multiple actions at once at times. I can't even conceive of how you could play with three characters as one person without it being an insanely frustrating experience, since you literally have to move each one individually, even when they're all side-by-side and going to the same place.

Ittle Dew got through lotcheck in EU recently. That version includes the patch content so it's at least on the horizon.

1,001 Spikes is probably completely on the backburner until Isaac Rebirth is out. Nicalis being Nicalis.

edit: oh wow, the timing:

Yes, following the release of The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

Adventures of Lolo

Ufouria, maybe? If people ask about single VC games, I tend to slant toward the off-beat and/or rare ones. Also Recca, but that's only on 3DS.

Wii U: Dr. Mario, Wario's Woods and Adventures of Lolo are nice puzzle games. Super Dodgeball is good but it's better played in multiplayer, obviously. Ufouria is a great game by Sunsoft, with excellent graphics and a cult-classic soundtrack. Life Force is a great shmup. Gargoyle's Quest 2 is going to release soon and it's also very good.

Wii: Gradius, Zanac and SCAT are cool shoot-em-ups. Bubble Bobble and Adventures of Lolo 2 are nice puzzles. The Legend of Kage, Mighty Bomb Jack, Milon's Secret Castle and Blaster Master are considered classics. I like Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom but it's not for everybody. Faxanadu is fantastic.

These are all good games and you're bound to find something you enjoy in there. Google them up, see a video or two on youtube and decide which one you're more interested in according to what you're looking for at the moment. This list assumes that you included Punch-Out, Double Dragon, Kid Icarus, River City Ransom, Metroid, Ninja Gaiden, etc as "obvious ones," of course. Have fun! And that's a nice avatar you got there.

Thanks everyone! These are really great recommendations. I think I'm going to check out Ufouria first and then one of the Lolo games.

Bored so I decided to check the rating boards. On USK, I found
High Strangeness - apparently a 12 bit game that was kickstarted back in 2009 and the blog for the game looks last to be updated in January

Underground - that surgeon training game

Family Tennis SP - you know those games by arc system works that star the same family

Citizen's of Earth

Meine ersten Mitsing-Lieder- Guessing German version of My First Songs

PEGI
Family Tennis SP again - but now I see that its listed by Shin'en interestingly

Cabela's Big Game Hunter: Pro Hunts - Weird to see this considering it's late compared to the US release, probably an eShop release

ACB
Not much but I've spotted High Strangeness and Alphadia Genesis

Also SDK Paint is due November 6 in America for $2.99. This is one I think is supposed to compatible with the minecraft clone, U Craft.

Oh hey, I'm waiting for those and the fabled Giana Sisters patch. Also, Curve really needs to patch Lone Survivor for off-TV, controller support and to smooth out the bugs.

Personally, I'm very happy to see that Nintendo added back the Donkey Kong Country games on the Wii Shop Channel. I was upset that I was no longer able to complete my collection of the trilogy because I had not purchased DKC3 at the time.

Now if only NoA would help us out and get 'em on Wii U...

I hope they do that too. I would gladly upgrade.

Speaking of, I'm curious if they'll ever re-add Yoshi's Cookie and SimCity too. No idea about the latter, but it did seem like Nintendo had actually planned on releasing Yoshi's Cookie for Wii U VC early on (the NES version was featured in an official sizzle reel trailer), but that appears to have fallen through thanks to last year's incident. I still find that to be a very peculiar situation that I wish we could understand more.

I will never understand germanys super stupid rating system. just use pegi already, like every other european country.
jeez

It's the superior system, that's why. Developers from the other end of the world don't need to ship their game/ demo material physically to the USK like it's 1995. They also don't need to pay for the rating per SKU. If it's one game, it's one rating. PEGI does both of these things wrong and are possibly the actual reason, we still can't choose between 50Hz and 60Hz versions of VC games on the eShop.
All that, while they don't even fully play the game they are rating.

What incident?

What incident?

For whatever reason, Nintendo resorted to removing Yoshi's Cookie from the Wii Shop Channel back in October 2013. They posted an announcement about this to give people time to buy it before it was gone, and like others, I took that opportunity to snatch it up for myself. I've always wondered what prompted this to happen, since it seemed counterintuitive to their plans of its Wii U eShop release that has yet to occur still.

They may have lost the rights to the game.

I find this to be a reasonable conclusion that I can side with, although in honesty, it's the specifics that really interest me. That is assuming you mean Yoshi's Cookie, but I suppose that holds true for SimCity as well.

Thanks, didn't know this. Do you know if it was removed in every region?

Alright, so the lack of Off TV mode for The Cave was because of the lack of time, and it's perfectly understandable since the system was relatively new back then, but, what's the excuse for Costume Quest 2? For fuck's sake Wii U game developers... Sigh, still getting it, I loved the first one.

If my memory serves me correctly, Yoshi's Cookie was pulled from all region stores including Europe and Japan. It appeared that this game needed to be removed everywhere.

Yes, I was speaking on Yoshi's Cookie but yea SimCity obviously falls under that domain as well. Anyway, Nintendo doesn't actually own the game Yoshi's Cookie, Bullet Proof Games owns the concept and licensed it to Nintendo where they slapped the Yoshi branding on the game.

You seem to have a good grasp of the situation. I can almost swear I've heard this story before, but now that you mention it, it does feel familiar to me. Thanks for sharing.

It is the only think that I can think that would be holding up the game.

FYI: SimCity is still comfortably sitting on available for purchase on the PAL Wii Shop Channel. I just bought it last year.

If you guys got any credit left after buying SMTIV, do consider getting Tetrobot & Co.

Obviously I can't attest to the quality of the port, yet, but the game is a very fun puzzler (from the 'Blocks That Matter' devs).

Apologies for the double post, but this review of Cosmophony is hilarious.

630x.jpg

We can’t help but think that a parallel universe exists in which Cosmophony plays a central, cruel role in deciding a person’s fate. In this somewhat dystopian, yet oddly hip and cool universe where drum and bass is the norm, a technocratic regime (made up of original developer, Bento–Studio, and Wii U porting pros, MovingPlayer) determines your right to existence by subjecting you to the task of completing this game or even just a single stage from it. While a tad peculiar, it’s something that could sound like fun until you realise that the failure rate for people who attempt this actually sits at 99.9 per cent.

The game is spread across five levels, which may not seem like much until you realise that it’s highly unlikely you’ll ever get past the third level.

Still and all:

Cosmophony runs at a solid 60 frames per second, making it feel suitably quick and slick enough to work with the soundtrack. The way in which the audiovisual elements are used to both assist and work against you is particularly noteworthy. If you have a strong aversion to drum and bass music then as with the difficulty this may not be your cup of tea, but the style of the music goes hand-in-hand with the sort of experience the developers are offering.

Cosmophony is not the sort of game that everyone will enjoy, nor was it designed to be. It’s an old-school challenge in terms of difficulty that requires impeccable timing, reaction speed and unwavering concentration on the player’s part. It’s a game that’s visually enticing, and the way in which the graphical elements are used to impact and augment the challenge of the gameplay is both unusual and exciting. It may seem like there isn't much on offer in terms of the number of stages or modes, but there’s a good chance you’ll never even reach the end without putting a serious amount of time and practice into each stage. With a relatively small asking price and a unique premise, Cosmophony is a game that should at least be experienced by anyone who rates gameplay above all other aspects.

They gave it a very impressive 8/10.

FWIW I'll be doing a giveaway for it soon enough.

Couldn't be arsed to. It has to be dead simple to program in, right?
I've heard it said it takes more effort to display a black screen on the Game Pad than it does the TV image but maybe that is a recent development or comes at a performance cost.

Thanks, didn't know this. Do you know if it was removed in every region?
(Yoshi no Cookie) Yes and it is not just a delisting (allowing owners to redownload if required) but a complete removal. When you do a system transfer to a Wii U it warns you that you can not redownload Yoshi's Cookie (which begs the question why transfer the license, why not leave it behind like Lost Winds was at Wii U launch).

I wish we'd get Sim City on Wii U VC. I have it on Wii VC, but be nice to have it on Wii U too

What's great about Sim City on SNES?

Aren't those types of games designed for keyboard and mouse?

I grew up playing Sim City 2000. I could imagine using a SNES controller to be difficult/unwieldly/inaccurate.

Too bad they were never really able to get Sim City 2000 and all it's glory onto consoles/handhelds fully. Saturn version is Lag City 2000. GBA is missing all underground stuff (and for some reason my copy had no music/sounds). I wonder how the N64DD version plays. I actually have that cart as a collector thing, but no N64DD system yet.

Me too. I played Sim City 2000 ALL the time on PC back in 90s/00s. But Sim City SNES was something special, cause it was simple (compared to 2000) it easier to control with controller/etc. That and unlike other versions, it was custom. Was more like Mario City. For example certain events got you presents, like a mayoral house or a casino (which gave you bigger crime but money) etc. It was very special.

sim city is great, i would say better than 2000. for the snes version anyway since 2000 can be pretty awkward and slow

I was never much of a fan of SimCity 2000. Just seems too sterile and boring to me.

SimCity for SNES is great though. Not too much detail, and lets you get into what's actually interesting. Laying underground water pipes isn't interesting >.>

I forget, does it work with the N64 mouse?
Too bad SimCity doesn't work with the SNES mouse.

I had bought a bunch of the 64DD games like a decade or so ago as well, planning to get the unit to go along with it later.
I never did, though, and ended up just selling the games off again later.

One of these days...

Oh I so disagree. Adding pipes, subways, etc was great. Same with highways. Got my cities up to year 10,000 and beyond. Even better was going to Streets of Sim City and exploring my city. Esp if I made a bunch of hills. haha

Bleh. All of the infrastructure stuff was always incredibly boring to me.
I just like placing buildings and watching them grow >.>

Streets of SimCity is incredibly awesome, and sadly underrated, though.

I was more interested in the infrastructure and terraforming part than the actual city building.

The taxes I could never get right and I always ended up at a negative.

I always cheated. I made my map super flat with maybe a river or ocean. Then in 1 corner I'd make a huge triangle mountain at the edge and go way up. Then I fill it with water and a small lake around it. so it was completely underwater/waterfall and use it as my power station with hydroelectric power.

Was fun to cheat with the 0% tax trick in Sim City SNES to get you max money with no roads and no axes. Build as much as you want! Of course people still complain even with 0% tax..

Regarding Costume Quest 2 and Off-TV, the we've now got official word that they're patching it in!

Just fyi guys - Off-screen WiiU play is coming soon in a patch.

This is straight from the programmer!

Sim City SNES was actually developed by Nintendo themselves. It has unique buildings and a Will Wright helper avatar (Dr. Wright) and Bowser appears as the monster attack.

You sold me on Will Wright(one of my favorite Western devs) but Bowser as a disaster too??

I have to try this.

I want SNES Sim City AND Tetris Attack on Wii U VC. Those are the last licensed Nintendo games I'm really missing though, at least until Tetris DS becomes an option.

Indeed - Dr. Wright is the best.
