Asus ROG Swift PG278Q monitor, 1440p/144hz/G-Sync

Issues I've had with my new GPU+monitor combo:

I get crashes in Japanese games that rely on vsync for timing. I'm not shocked at this. Raiden III, for example, won't boot. Trails in the Sky might have given me trouble, too, but I don't remember. I would expect the same behavior on a non-gsync setup if I forced vsync off for every game. No problem, I can add exceptions in the nvidia control panel.

Shadow of Mordor consistently doesn't start up for me in gsync. It gives me an error about the video device not being found or something like that. I can boot it in windowed mode and transition to fullscreen (gsync) just fine once I hit the main menu. I know that a friend of mine that also has a Swift but uses SLI 970s (I'm using a single 980) does not have this issue, oddly enough.

I don't know if it's still an issue, but I have a Rift DK2 and the software for that installed.

I don't know if it's widespread with g-sync monitors but mine keeps crashing.

As I said earlier the only way to fix it is to cut the power to the monitor. Rebooting the computer won't fix it.

It happens many times a week, and I'm afraid it's an hardware issue

Your monitor is crashing? Can you explain what you mean by this?

There was a display driver bug with G-Sync mode that would often cause the display to behave like there was no video signal. I experienced it when I got my ROG Swift. The only way to resolve it was to disconnect/reconnect the DisplayPort cable. Is this what you're seeing? Make sure you're using the latest NVIDIA WHQL driver as I've not experienced the problem since installing that driver.

I don't know if it's still an issue, but I have a Rift DK2 and the software for that installed.

Other users have reported problems using this display with DK2 software installed. If you can't find any reports of this particular problem with SoM, I would disconnect the DK2, remove the Oculus software and see if the problem goes away. Right now you have one of the least common hardware setups on the planet.

Yeah, I've been considering trying that since I heard about DK2 issues, but just haven't wanted to go through with it yet. Interestingly that friend of mine with the 970s also has DK2 software installed and the headset plugged in and has no issue with SoM, but I should still give it a shot at some point.

I've found it's best to do a clean sweep of drivers and start fresh whenever adding new hardware...did that with my graphics card right before getting the monitor and haven't had a single issue.

Shadow of Mordor looks fanfuckingtastic btw. I don't think I can ever go back to gaming without gsync

Yup, it was the Rift runtime giving me issues in SoM. It was also the cause of some issues I had with DSR in Dark Souls 2. Annoying, but hopefully that'll be resolved soon.

You can just uninstall the Rift display driver (and leave the runtime and camera driver installed) and then use the Rift in extended mode. A lot less annoying.

Direct Mode is my shit (isn't it everybody's?), but yeah, that might have to be the compromise for now. Hopefully UE4 supports that.

I'll be moving to England on Tuesday and I need the monitor as fast as it's possible. What's the best place to order in the UK? Is Amazon ok since I have a Prime subscription?

It's been out of stock for ages on Amazon, other places like ebuyer, scan and overclockers uk seem to have had a decent supply though

Came in stock on newegg for 5 minutes while I was sleeping, sigh. First time in over two weeks!

I have one on back order at a local store, they said they should have some in by the end of October =(

I hope the wait is worth it. Going to be costing me over a grand in Canada with taxes.

I didn't realize that these were so hard to get outside of the UK going by the above posts.
I don't understand why they are so hard to find given they seem easy to find in Euroland. It's a real bummer, but I will manage to snap one eventually. Hopefully in the next week!

Does anyone have experience running a multi monitor setup with these?

I want to use my nice IPS for Netflix, photo editing and so on, but then game @ 144hz / G-Synch.

So, yeah - doable?

So did they just stop making this monitor or something, or is demand just that high?

Demand is super high, probably the highest in demand monitor I have ever seen(at least in the USA)

(either that, or they under produced the monitor, or a ton of exchanges, though doubtful)

I actually returned mine for another one and that also had the same fault (then I got a refund) although I'm inclined to think a lot of them have it after looking around the internet. look at white smoke contrasted against a dark background and the smoke looks like a grid pattern with the individual pixels being really evident, very noticeable on the first 2mins of ethan carter and especially in 3D vision mode. On the places on the screen where it happened It actually made the screen seem lower res than my current 1080p 120hz one, once i noticed it I couldn't live with it. Other than that the monitor was excellent, great stand and colours (for tn) and was my ideal spec, pretty gutted about it tbh

I miss gsync a lot, might give the acer 4k a shot when it's out

First time experiencing a monitor above 60hz. Simply mind blowing and G-Sync is phenomenal. Yeah it is a TN panel but for me it's worth the change.

Is there a "sweet spot" when it comes to 120/144hz G-Sync monitors? I don't mind 1080p, and I can't afford to drop over $1k for a monitor right now. What kind of options do I have for a good quality monitor that isn't too expensive?

I... Really want this monitor... ,_,

Buuuut it's the equivalent of $1300-1400 here, and there's no way in hell I can pay that much for a monitor.

This'll definitely be on sale at some point within this decade, right?

... Right? Guys?.. G... Guys?...

Wait for free-sync royalty-free adaptive sync of whatever it's being called.

We're sure to see one of those be affordable within the decade... Hopefully sooner.

Well after having spent some time with my ROG Swift I can say that 120+ FPS G-Sync gaming is pretty awesome and I'm not sure if I can go back now, however Even high quality TN panels still suck as far as overall picture quality goes. I don't understand why LCD HDTVs that are not TN panels can be 240hz but for some reason pc monitors only TN panels can go above 60hz without some overclocking hacks

At any rate the picture quality is still good enough that I will stick with it, just a little disappointing coming from a 4 year old IPS dell ultra sharp monitor

I've had an order with Frys since the 4th with them telling me it would be in stock on the 20th and then the 24th. After seeing that it went in stock at several other places today, I told them that if they didn't plan to get it in stock within a week to cancel the order.

Considering even going for the 144hz gsync acer since trying to find one of these is a pain in the ass.

Those TV's are not true 120/240hz or whatever.

Those TV's are not true 120/240hz or whatever.

The refresh rate is 120/240hz but they do not accept a >60hz signal. They use interpolation to produce fake frames but I wouldn't think there would be a technical limitation that would prevent those panels from accepting an actual >60hz signal. I don't know enough about display technology to know for sure though.

Fenix frame already mentioned why the posted refresh rate on TVs is wrong.

As for your second question 120 Hz IPS monitors already exist but they'll set you back over $10K. The only affordable non TN display is the one from Eizo.

That monitor is baller, but I returned it for the ROG

ULMB at 85Hz should be a good compromise that's worth checking out when your card can't push higher. (still waiting for them to be in stock here so I can try it out)

So in the future when I can only reach 60 in games, should I go for ULMB or put down some settings and keep g-sync?

I got one from newegg. I bought one from Best Buy on the 29, but I checked the order last night and it changed to backordered, so I'm going to cancel that one.

I still think 60 FPS is the point of dimenishing returns, yes being able to go up to 144FPS makes a difference but 30 to 60 is more noticeable than 60 to 100, but G-Sync is great.

I have been playing Tomb Raider with the FPS constantly changing anywhere from 40 to over 100 and the game stays perfectly smooth with no stuttering or screen tearing.
