I left my external hard drive at my house so my screen shot use was limited.

Words from a person that doesn't post anymore.

DO NOT just post the title of the movie you watched. It isn't conducive at all to the kind of discussion & communication we want to engender here, because it tells us nothing of you, the movie, the impact of the latter on the former. Post scores, descriptions, essays, poems, gifs, hashtags, whatever provides you the best outlet for personal expression, you unique little digital snowflake. Also, Marvel movies are mostly shit. - icarus-daedelus

Here's the monthly round-up:

10 Films to See In November

I watched Nightcrawler last night. Pretty interesting look at a sociopath. Some scenes are down right creepy and uncomfortable.

I guess I'll do the same thing as last month and list my 5 best new to me movies of October:

1. Nightcrawler
2. The Last Picture Show
3. Heart of Glass
4. The Breakfast Club
5. Wild At Heart

Wanna see something theatrical tonight but I can't decide between Wetlands, Dear White People, Nightcrawler, John Wick and Force Majeure. Leaning Force Majeure.
I guess I'll do the same thing as last month and list my 5 best new to me movies of October:

1. Nightcrawler
2. The Last Picture Show
3. Heart of Glass
4. The Breakfast Club
5. Wild At Heart

Ooh yeah this is a good thing to keep going monthly I think. For me:

1) Band of Outsiders
2) I Walked With a Zombie
3) Eraserhead
4) Strange Circus
5) The Age of Innocence
and I'm gonna put down 6) Listen Up Philip and 7) The Hunt for Red October just because I feel bad not having them on the list.

I came down with the flu, and have been unable to sleep for more than a few hours at a time. As such, I broke out Netflix to watch a couple of films:

1) Snowpiercer. I felt the same way about this film as I did about the Host, in that I am unsure where all of the acclaim came from. Goofy, cartoony characters, heavy handed social allegories, and subpar action scenes. The film was shot well, but other than that, it was basically a B movie.

2) End of Watch. I liked the film. It took a little while to get used to the switches between film and personal camera footage, but the format was interesting and the leads were likable.

Good idea! My top 5 new movies from
31 Days of
October in no particular order.

Mil gritos tiene la noche AKA Pieces [1982]
Amer [2009]
Reazione a catena AKA A Bay of Blood [1971]
E tu vivrai nel terrore - L'aldilà AKA The Beyond [1981]
À l'intérieur AKA Inside [2007]

Noteworthy mention to The Babadook [2014]

November already started strong with Husbands and Wives and A Most Wanted Man as well :D

I watched Nightcrawler yesterday. I thought it was great, Gylenhaal was fantastic and completely disappeared into the role. He deserves a lot of recognition for his performance. 4/5

Also watched Django Unchained the other night. I had some problems with the final act, mainly the
death of Schultz.
But it was a fun movie, although also a bit too long.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
It was alright. I found the story to be a bit formulaic at parts and predictable. The motion capture was stunning though and probably deserves more credit.

A Field In England
A stunning psychedelic audio visual experience. Set in the 17th century English civil war period for the amazing and bizarre backdrop of a bad acid trip. The last act in particular looks absolutely stunning with the wind blowing everywhere and the wonderfully trippy seizure inducing editing.

November has already been pretty great to me so far: Don't Deliver Us From Evil, Matalo, and The Day a Pig fell into a Well were all really great. Gonna go see either Nightcrawler, Birdman or Force Majeure tonight probably.

Top 5 from October:
5. A Lizard in a Woman's Skin
4. Sun Don't Shine
3. The Brood
2. Peppermint Frappe
1. To Our Loves

So since November started, I've watched (for the first time):

Midnight in Paris
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Django Unchained

All fantastic in their own ways. I want to just watch each of them over again

Nightcrawler: 7/10. Pretty good. Gyllenhaal gives a great performance, really makes your skin crawl. Thought the Chariots of Fire soundtrack was an odd choice, very distracting. Also surprised so many irl newscasters chose to be in a film that so cynical about their profession.

Top 5 first-time-viewings for October

1. Alien
2. Gone Girl
3. Silence of the Lambs
4. John Wick
5. Near Dark

Pretty stacked, I think, and hard as hell to rank. House of the Devil gets an honorable mention, too

I saw a couple of other films last month (that I talked about in the October thread), but in case you're a weirdo and don't want to venture into other threads to talk about films, this is what I watched for the annual horror film marathon.

I think I'm catching Interstellar on 70mm on Thursday, and, weather permitting, biking out to catch Birdman on Saturday.

♫It's the most wonderful time of the year♫

Birdman
Hmm. Not quite sure what to think of this; I didn't dislike it but I didn't totally like it either. There are parts of it I really liked -- especially Ed Norton, who ironically has the standout performance here -- but I guess it just didn't really come together for me into something meaningful and feels less than the sum of its parts. It tackles themes of actor's identity, art vs. commercialism in Hollywood, etc. but didn't seem to add anything new to that conversation imo.

Best new watches of October:
1. Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy
2. Gone Girl
3. Kill the Messenger
4. The Princess Bride
5. An American Werewolf in London
6. Nightcrawler

Nightcrawler

I did not find this movie, or Jake G.'s performance, as riveting as most critics, but it's still a nice movie and a good directorial debut.

Best first-time views in October?

1. Gone Girl
2. The Producers
3. Vicky Cristina Barcelona
3. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
3. John Wick

Can't name a top 5 for October. Not even 3.

I enjoyed How to Steal a Million though. I'd mention Unbreakable, Tron, and maybe A Few Good Men, but I didn't like them that much.

Birdman

yeah i didn't get too much out of it besides a couple of laughs

the opening line had me rolling imagining batman saying "this place smells like balls"

i actually found it kind of annoying initially, the way the characters were all talking like they were on coke and the walk and talks and jazz drumming soundtrack.. but it settled into a decent rhythm

watched robot & frank this afternoon on netflix .. it was a cute movie, good if you're feeling blue~

Top 5 first views last month:

5) Dardennes' first three features (tie)
4) Grey Gardens
3) The Awful Truth
2) Umberto D.
1) A Taste of Cherry

Honorable mentions: Inherent Vice, Eden, Irma Vep, Citizenfour, Performance, Stray Dog (1949), Leviathan (2014), and Goodbye to Language.

Memento
Second time seeing this one. Didn't blow me away like the first time. The choppy nature of it was a little jarring. But once I grasped how they were piecing the story together basically in reverse, I got pretty into it. The ending though... hmm I'm not sure...

Insomnia
First time proper viewing, though I had seen most of the film many times on AMC. Anywho, great performances from Pacino and Robin Williams (RiP). You could see some early remnants of Nolan-esque filmmaking for the Batman movies in some scenes here. Some really great shots and well developed Alaskan atmosphere. Still, nothing too special here. Just a well made thriller. I enjoyed it.

Whiplash is the best movie I've seen this year. It's just intense and gripping the entire way through. The music, not surprisingly, is fantastic as well.

Nightcrawler was good, but something about it just felt... weird. I didn't like the production and the score was awful to the point of being distracting (James Newton Howard is usually decent, too). Kind of shocked by it being 94% Fresh, but I'm guessing it's all based on praise for Gyllenhaal and not as much the film itself, which is definitely warranted — he's great.

Just caught Nightcrawler too-- I think the newscasters may have agreed to it because the focus, when it comes down to it, isn't really about the rotten heart of news media or anything. actually, it's about ethics in games joIt's more generally about how rotten people can be, and examines that through how the information age can accelerate the dehumanization of those with sociopathic tendencies, how modern video and internet technology interacts with a rigid institution like television news, and how everyone has moral and monetary prices. Gyllenhaal is amazing, every tic and delivery has been teased toward stiltedness the ideal amount, confirming he's screwy without landing (at least for a while) on exactly how dead his emotional nerve endings are. I'm torn on the score: it's bad to the point of parody, and part of me wants to think that was intentional. That it's what Lou Bloom (excuse me, Louis) hears. It is vaguely celebratory. The rest of me is stuck on how it sounded like grating stock cues. Lou seems like he'd be able to imagine a better soundtrack.

Caught a double feature over the weekend. Cross posting a bit:

Birdman: This movie was crafted with so much love, goddamn. Has a lot to say about a lot of aspects of the industry, and it's done in a clever/dark way. Keaton and Norton are great man. Perfectly casted.

Only part I didn't care for was
the social networking bits. "Oh you're trending on twitter" stuff. Though that can just be to show the significance of approval in Riggan's mind.
The music was so frantic and fit with the direction flawlessly. Reminded me a bit of Punch Drunk Love in that respect.

Next one was a pretty big disappointment:

Nightcrawler: Really didn't care for it aside from Jake's performance. Couldn't tell if it wanted to be a black comedy or not. I feel it dedicated quite a bit to that and it wasn't done well enough. The lack of focus in general hurt. The psychologically frightening moments fell really flat and there was some awful dialog I just laughed at. (And I wasn't sure I was supposed to).

The music was poor and completely removed me from the movie. Dull visually. Worst of all it was pretty damn boring, caught myself waiting for it to end often.

Best October watches?

1. Hiroshima Mon Amour
2. John Wick
3. Gone Girl
4. Edge of Tomorrow

I'm not even sure what else I watched last month.

Traffickers (2012): Wow, what an incredible tale, that really makes you consider the often untold about gray area, when it comes to human and organ trafficking.
And that protagonist, such a selfless, lovable fella', always getting the short end of the stick.

I suggest everyone watch this movie, and i'll surely keep a closer eye on whoever wrote it and their future works.

But really though, it was a turd of incomparable levels, with a creep of a protagonist; probably the worst and most annoying movie i've seen in 2014.

Just saw Dredd. Fantastic movie. Karl Urban basically perfects the role, though the voice took a bit of getting used to (not deep enough at first blush, but it grew on me).

Struggling to get pure platinum on chapter XVI... shit, wrong thread.

Don't even have a top 5 for October.

Best: Sexy Beast and In the Heat of the Night.
Worst: Hatfields & McCoys and Harvey.

The Goodfellas leave the Casino for Wall Street was pretty ok.

Funeral Parade of Roses still in the lead for my movie of the year.

only watched 4 movies last month:
1. Gone Girl
2. Listen Up Phillip
3. The Conjuring
4. Scream

all except Scream were scary. also, i don't get the love for Scream. Jamie Kennedy saying his name was kinda funny, but besides that...

saw Nightcrawler. Gyllenhaal continues to be good at acting and can surprisingly be hilarious. it was freaky and gross but in a good way.

I just saw Her. Wow, I wasn't expecting to be so emotionally invested in that movie. It was one of the most beautifully crafted movies I've seen in a while, cinematography was great, everything about the futuristic city setting was wonderful, and the soundtrack was outstanding, probably my favorite movie of last year.

Killers (2014): Definitely not as bad as Traffickers, but not particularly great nor memorable.
At risk of showing how i missed the whole point of the movie, i'm gonna say it would've been a better movie with the whole Japanese part cut, because it felt very by the numbers "psycho serial women killer" plot, and the constant back and forth slowed down the whole film (it didn't fucking need to be more than 2 hours).
The Jakarta section was more intriguing instead, although not really that fleshed out in the end, which further reinforces my point.

Just watched Fury and thought it was great. Good acting across the board, nice action and set pieces. Found the music little weird at times and didn't suit some places.

I enjoyed the story. No super mission to kill Hitler and end the war or anything just solders doing what they "have" to. I didn't enjoy the whole introduce a new guy
into a group of people. He's "weak" and hates it but learns and in place gives and earns respect. Why do so many films have to do this?

I also thought it was kinda off him being the only one that survived they should've all been killed in that battle. Speaking of the last battle it was very cool, little weird how it suddenly turned to night just as it started. And then the lame things like Norman recons ahead and seeing a whole group of SS with loads of anti tank rockets but in the battle you only see like two being shot off but I guess it's a movie so the heroes can't be wiped out that quickly

Mr. Babadook: I like horrors that go for the whole mental illness/depression metaphor, and i thought this was a pretty great one for the most part.
Restrained in many ways, fun editing and performances.

The climax went on for too long, and with some really cheesy lines though, and the whole
home alone moments
were (unintentionally?) funny, breaking the tension built.
Also, oh God that Godzilla scream sound effect, was it awfully hilarious and distracting.

Still, one the recent horrors i liked the most, my favorite of the last two years, had it not ruined its final act.

Been sick this week so I have been watching all the Harry Potter films. All the movies in the series are good but I always enjoy Azkaban through Half Blood Prince the most.

Watched Enders Game the other day. Alright film, heard the book is very good.
what a dick move to make the kids believe they were doing a simulation only to reveal it was real
