Blizzard announces Overwatch. Team based MP Shooter [Up: Trailers, Screens, More]

Looks really nice visually, and I'm sure the MOBA-ish elements will be done very well by Blizzard, but I just can't get into what I've seen so far. I feel like I've always been the odd one out on Blizzard games in general though.

It's really hard to get excited about a Team Fortress 2 style game when TF2 stopped being cool like four years ago.

Like, the Engineer equivalent capping at 200 scrap in Overwatch was a profound moment of realization on just how creatively bankrupt Blizzard is.

Anyone else see Sarah Kerrigan in her design? I know it's by the same developers.

If I remember right, thats the same artist that worked on Firefall's concept art: http://kotaku.com/5629779/firefall-concept-art/

I'm undecided here. If they cycle through at least one for free throughout the months/years, a first purchase to focus on one character should still be extrodinarily cheap if it follows LoL. Even if you hated it, then bought a character in hopes that you'd like it, then hated it and dropped it, you would lose less than if you bought Destiny.

The issue with buying characters in a competitive multiplayer game is that it completely ruins the balance. LOL has had non stop issues with balancing heroes that perform a non standard role because if a non standard 'meta' role is viable, then every player who does not own a character who can perform that role has fewer options for playstyle. Leading to homogenization, leading to obvious tiers of power.

There are also the issues with discoverability that come from being unable to play heroes you don't own, which is the best way to figure out their weaknesses.

One of the more surprising things about this is just how GOOD it looks. It's Blizzard so I was expecting something with great art but not graphically demanding.

Doesn't look very demanding to me.
It looks like it's using the same engine as Heroes of the Storm.

Am I the only one sad that it's not an MMO anymore? At the very least it should have MMO elements like Destiny. This is just a team based shooter now. /sigh

I'm interested in trying it out. I don't think I'd actually spend money on it if they have a bunch of extra paid content. The F2P folks having such rabid competition have saturated the market to the point that I can just bounce from game to game without ever paying for anything. I haven't spent more than a dollar on anything on my iPad for a year, and if they're going to push this to the high-end gaming market, all they're going to accomplish is giving me ADD in that space as well. My wife loves it for budgetary reasons, but these people will eventually starve, because I can't be the only person who's figuring this out.

Another TF2 is more than welcome, seeing as the current TF2 is probably way too fucking hard to get into at this point!

If that isn't true, then whatever, this has an ape with spectacles.

Dang it. Why do I never get these memos?!

finally, a game with turrets you upgrade by hitting with wrenches, healing beams that can also buff people's attack power, a sniper rifle you have to charge, bows and arrows, teleporters, stealth killing invisible men, and wacky cartoon characters who speak in stereotypical accents

So par for the course for Blizzard =D

LoL hero monetization system sucks ass.

Yeah Steve Jobs never would have let this happen.

Hint: You have no idea what you're talking about with regards to "compromise." Calm your tits and learn more about the game before writing it off.

Of course I have. This game is just a piece of something bigger and more ambitious that they salvaged. It's the equivalent of canning WoW and just letting the PVP.

If you want to play Team Fortress 3, that´s great. Not my case.

Hint: Be more respectful with other opinions.

holy crap, they based this game on the first version of titan.

There were play testers of Titan first Iterations that were saying the MMO was very similar to team fortress.

I remember reading the almost a half a decade ago. There were multiple people stating this but no one believed it.

Yep. Might as well play TF2 if Overwatch isn't bringing anything new to the genre.

I don't like TF2 and i don't like this. The only appealing thing are numerous abilities, but id rather play CS 1.6 warcraft/superhero mode than this.

Is this going to be more like Team Fortress 2 in that there will be multiples of a class or more like a MOBA where you pick your teams and then go into the game? I'd be more interested if it was more like a MOBA in that everyone picks their champ back and forward and then the game starts.

Uh, the Starcraft 2 engine?

Uh, I didn't know that was the same, however HoTS' lighting looks like it's been improved over SC2's. This Overwatch game generally looks close to the engine HoTS uses.
If SC2 and HoTS use the same engine then sure but I'm not sure why you asked that question because if it's SC2's engine, then it's HoTS' too. lol

It's the game we've all been waiting for

I'm actually really loving this. Even though it is blatantly borrowing from TF2, I'm looking forward to a good Arena shooter.

We'll see if Epic beats them to the punch with the next Unreal.
