Blizzard announces Overwatch. Team based MP Shooter [Up: Trailers, Screens, More]

Their constant issue with outdated graphics over the last decade or so doesn't help either.

Blizzard's visuals have been steadily improving artistically since WC3. Look at WoW for example. Look at Heroes of the Storm.

As for the tech side, they're not pushing boundaries but SC2 is one of the best looking RTS games there is I think.
WoW is a 10 year old game which has been improved visually with every expansion up to what they have now in WoD, new more modern looking smoke, lighting, shadows, animations and environments full of vegetation and nice textures.

Heroes of the Storm, although not out yet is probably the best looking MOBA. I'm not into the genre but I can't think of any MOBAs that look better.

This game shows how much risk you can take with with FPS. It looks so wildly different from other games in the genre. Call of Duty, take note.

Winston is an incredibly common black first name in the Caribbean and in the UK. Which that site mentions.

No different from if they had named the gorilla character Tyrone or Jamal.

And the two most famous people are a British prime minister and a British rock legend's middle name. Both were white.

But please, continue.

I'm so confused on the art direction here. What's the theme? Everything seems so out of place. The characters are all "Mechy" but the environments are....regular places on earth? Dwarf, robot monk, arrow shooting samurai, metal hammer man, smart gorilla whaaat?

It just looks like a mess visually.

...what?

I foresee some overreactions of the year to come out of this thread. I'm personally tentatively looking forward to this, if it's like vanilla TF2 I'll like it, if it's like new TF2 I'll hate it. :/

i.e. no stupid weapons and hats, better map design and also classes with defined roles.

The game is mechanically the same as it was 6 years ago, what grievances do you have with it?

So is this gonna be like Hearthstone or are we gonna have to buy the game once it fully releases?

It seems pretty obvious to me that it is going to be F2P where you buy heroes. You cant make a successful multilayer game on PC without it being F2P.

I like the look of the game and I think bring the dota style heroes to an fps will be hugely successful.

Winston is a stereotypical black name?

It's probably set up like Dirty Bomb/Extraction in that regard: Weekly rotation, unlock new characters with in-game currency or money, maybe a limited set of alternative weapons/abilities to unlock for each character.

If I had my way, it'd be more like Smite or Tribes Ascend, which have all of that plus the option of a $30 unlock for all current and future characters.

I hope they don't do any alternate weapons or skills. Knowing exactly what a character can do just by seeing them run around a corner is pretty important to being able to learn a game like this.

I guess they could do them if they make the character look super different when equipped, but at that point just make a new character.

Oooh

I guess I'm ok with that and that sounds like a great idea!

When I saw the trailer and Winston appeared, I'm like.... but it's probably not intentional, because even if it's a common black name, you rarely see it used for stereotypical black characters. I think.

It will probably happen but to put things into perspective, they now have five major titles they're actively working on. That is of course unless they announce WC4 or a Diablo expansion too.
I wouldn't count on seeing their games on consoles any time soon.

Honestly, what I liked about vanilla TF2 versus what it's like now (or when I last played it 3 years ago) is that it was relatively simple, and complexity was born out of player choices. It was all fairly straight forward, and the players mattered more than the character abilities, if that makes sense. This game seems like it's all about the over the top player abilities, and it seems like Overwatch will get really stale after a while.

Edit: Danny O'Dwyer being on board gives me a bit of hope though.

I mean, if they're designing heroes the way MOBA champions are designed where there's overall class role (attack / defend / support) with a couple of cooldown based superpowers for each, this goes way beyond TF2 having unlockable weapons to mix up class roles and potentially goes full on MOBA in terms of possible future updates.

Looks good to me.

EDIT:
yes churchill born in 1870's really does refute his argument

Please, "Winston" is in no way synonymous with "Black man name", any more than anthropopmorphic gorilla is synonymous with "sinister covert racism"

The graphics are simplistic for mass accessibility. League of Legends didn't become the world's most popular game by needing a GTX Titan (pun?) to run it.

Yeah this is the impression I'm also getting.

They call it a "Payload" too. My face is going to wrinkle with all this cringing.
