Blizzard announces Overwatch. Team based MP Shooter [Up: Trailers, Screens, More]

Do we know if this is going to be a regular $50-$60 game? Or free to play?

Couldn't find anything concrete but I'm leaning towards the latter unfortunately.

Somebody asked Kaplan this in the Q&A. He said they hadn't even thought about it and basically gave the polite answer of "it's above their pay grade".

It's not Team Fortress by any stretch even though a lot of things look ridiculously similar on the surface. It's kind of weird because its combat feels more MOBA than FPS even though by all rights it's an FPS. But because of the extreme movement and a lot of damage on the ultimates, offensive roles are a lot more divey in this game than in a traditional FPS. Also the smaller team size and closer maps, it feels possible to carry games when you're on fire. It reminds me more of playing League than it does playing TF2.
Well put and agreed.

Walking makes me want to shoot myself. Game also needs more HP packs IMO and there a lot of weird dead ends on the maps.

Feels like pub TF2 reliant on having 1 medic or 1 turret which makes things like 3x easier.

Medic and turret deploy guy are pretty decent.

...its entirely different approach to design to plan around monetization.

Sounds like BS or true Blizzard cluelessness in actually getting out of their F2P

I think it's more the luxury of pulling in a hundred million a month from your cash cow. You sometimes get to make the cool shit and then ask "how do we want to make money from it?"

I think the TTKs in the video are exaggerated just for the video. In the panel they said the engagements are longer than a modern military shooter to increase interactivity or something. Also in the video you can see the HP of opponents aren't at max before they get hit and then die. I'd imagine the sniper character(s) has the shortest ttk of 1 shot against some if not all though.

So for example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dushZybUYnM#t=297

The fight between the dude with the hammer and the bow character, the bow character is already at like 40% hp before he gets hit by the ranged attack and then smacked against with a melee before dying.

There's absolutely no way this is true. The monetization of a game completely effects development.

This has either F2P w/ hats or F2P w/ hats + character unlocks written all over it, depending on whether or not they want to release new characters periodically.

Plus, look at that cashcow. WoW is a full priced game, with a subscription, and a pretty extensive in-game content store all at once.

I guess it falls short of the extent of items a typical F2P game has, but I'd be willing to bet the revenue they make from the in game shop is quite substantial.

Personally, I think Blizz could get away with charging full price and then just selling cosmetics and making money hand over fist, assuming the game is popular. Why limit yourself to F2P when your fanbase will not only buy your game at full price but also gobble up every dumb hat you crap out every month?

Maybe I'm wrong though.

Kinda weird to show off a new IP and universe with a f2p multiplayer game. The Titan MMO would have been better in that regard, but fuck MMO's.

I'm interested but cautious since monetization and Blizzard is a pretty bad combo.

I'd pay full price for it. I don't really buy hats (the only skins I have in League is a Braum skin I picked up in a bundle and a couple of skins gifted to me by friends) so whatever money Blizzard wants I'll shove it in their face.

the trailer seriously looks a like Disney/Pixar movie

really liking the concept of this game, wonder how many different classes there will be

I've played almost 4 matches (thanks power outage) and have 1200+ hours of TF2.

And yes trailer kills are one hits for impact. Bow ability never kills anyone lol.

I kinda agree, I'd rather the game be full price with a hat store, only as long as the full cast at release (since we can assume they'll expand with more characters) is available to all. Monetizing the characters is kinda obvious but somehow I hope they don't do that, it's really the worst part of LoL in my opinion.

I hate hate hate hate hate the attitude and overall feel of the trailer.

It's IDENTICAL to any Dreamworks film, and that's not a compliment.

Widowmaker doesn't one shot kill even a Tracer without a Mercy powering her up or a Zenyatta debuffing the Tracer. But the recharge and reload time is obscenely short.

I just can't be more hyped about this game. I've been on a break from FPS since there just isn't anything out that I am really excited to play. Heck, there isn't much coming that I am that excited to wait for.

But now my favorite developer is making a game for my favorite genre? It is like I just won the lotto. I am holding my hype in check, cause who knows - maybe it won't do well (fuck, it will do well), but maybe I just won't like it (I will).
!

I feel the same, this is 100% what i want in a game. Sadly this won´t be out until 2015 :(

looks pretty interesting. the main thing for me will be the business model. if it is in fact a F2P game will they go full greed and make you either grind/pay2in for content/abilities/etc. or will they sell character/weapon skins and put everyone on an even scale? idk if this has been announced/discussed on the panel or not, i wasnt able to watch it yet & have only watched the cinematic/gameplay trailer.

I rewatched the gameplay stuff now without the hype clouding my judgement.

I think the game has some good ideas. It looks interesting enough to at least give it a go once. What I do worry about is how it will age.

While not "ugly", it's coming out a time when the generation is about to change in a big way. I do hope the developers come out with a sequel, because I don't see myself playing the same visuals for the next 5 or 10 years.

Although knowing Blizzard, this wish will go ignored and they'll continue to support this for a decade.

Already looking forward to the sequel of a 2015 game because graffix.

This recent crop of juniors is priceless.

AH good shit. I'm jealous :D

Do you think the game may potentially be competitively played? (like tournaments etc, or just mainly a casual title? Everything I have seen points to a competitive skill based shooter, especially the ton of movement skills and skill shots like the ricochet arrow).

Why does this look like a Team Fortress 2 clone to me?

Everything about this game reminds me of Team Fortress 2 and Portal.

It looks very interesting. How MOBAy is it though? Are there levels? Do you buy stuff in game?

Blizzard is very fair with Hearthstone in terms of F2P, so I hope they focus on cosmetics only if OW follows suit.

This looks amazing. TF2 is one of my favorite games ever and this seems to share a lot of its mechanics. Cant wait to get my hands on this.

The funny thing is, that type of visuals is what ages best. Compare say PS2 games of a more artistic style to a realistic style, I doubt anyone will say the realistic style is what has aged best(I certainly wouldn't). Not to mention people have been playing WoW with near enough the same visuals for 10 years. If it'll fail, I'm not sure it'll be the fault of the graphics.

This looks like so much fun! Love the art and character designs. I'm really curious about the cast because Winston/Gorilla sounds super familiar but I just can't remember who he sounds like.

He's just deflecting... :P I mean, the lead game designer has to know. It has such a huge effect on game design. You just don't tack that on at the last minute based on what the CFO thinks. Usually it's built for the ground up for one revenue model or another.

The same rumours that were true about the genre and setting also say F2P with a sort of DOTA/LOL style mini-transaction model. Not pay-to-win but segmented content. Which of course is not certain but where there's smoke, there's fire; and there was fire about the genre and setting so I wouldn't be surprised if the same holds true for F2P. I could see it being like Driveclub or a hybrid, too; like a F2P version but also a way you can buy a full version or subscribe where you get better value if you play all the time/always buy all characters. It makes sense to diversify their income sources too from either just retail (SC) or expansions/subscriptions (WC).

This looks awesome.

However, if they make it pay-per-character I'm out. Their monetization of Heroes of the Storm blows, I hope they do better with this.

Sounded like Titan was canned a long time ago and reworked into this game.
Not even reworked per se... Overwatch was mostly a working part within Titan. This is probably how it was even existing within Titan -- maybe just more developed but otherwise the same work. Some of the insider tweets today basically say it was a mode within Titan -- Overwatch was basically the PvP mode in Titan. It was further developed probably because it's a good way to test core gameplay and gameplay mechanics, so when the rest of the MMO began to fall a part (and later with stuff like Rob Pardo leaving) they probably decided that it just wasn't going to work/be too risky/expensive/too much work and they're bored of MMOs/whatever, and looked at Titan and said, what's good/fun about it -- the FPS PvP mode. So they stop focusing on the MMO of it and just kept developing the PvP FPS mode over a year ago, and now we're here.

I wonder where the line is between this being a natural evolution where they simply thought Overlook was better than Titan, or if this is partially a salvage operation. Some of the rumours seemed to suggest the latter -- they're just trying to get some money's worth out of the work put into Titan. But Metzen seemed pretty sincere, so I'm thinking it's not just salvaging Titan because the MMO (and MMO team) lost steam, but that this is still a natural and optimal development choice. He seemed pretty emotional, even more so than I've seen him about WoW so I get the impressed they're pretty proud or hopeful about it.

I don't think it's going to fail because of graphics. I just think the timing of the game in relation to next gen games coming out next year and soon after means it's not going to hold my interest for the long term (unless the gameplay is absolutely spectacular that it has me coming back anyway).

But that's just me. I already admit my wish will likely fall on deaf ears since Blizzard doesn't release sequels fast enough.

I think on the one hand you can say maybe they are trying to recoup money. But I would look at it like... blizzard never releases bad products (opinions can differ I guess). I think Blizzard would scrap a game (starcraft ghosts) before not being dedicated to the first game based on a new IP in the past 17 years.

Plus I heard devs from red5 moved back to blizzard, probably adding a lot of fps experience to the team.

Of course, more FPS. Our industry needs more of that.

Yeah, man. I wanted them to make another MOBA! And then rework WoW into a MOBA! And then have a Diablo MOBA! And then we'd have Heroes of the Storm as a little bit of everything MOBA!

Or, or.. they could have done StarCart! Or a realistic racing simulator!

Or a mobile Diablo puzzle game! Where you had to connect loot of various rarities to get points! :D

Oh, oh! What about a Warcraft dating simulator!

Or maybe I could just lump a whole, varying genre into one group and join the circle jerk of people complaining about FPSs and how stagnant they have made the gaming industry!

"Oh, I don't think this game will work because other games are coming out too! Unless I do like this game!" Hilarious. :P
