Blizzard announces Overwatch. Team based MP Shooter [Up: Trailers, Screens, More]

Just catching up on this now and man, I just.. what. Not at all what I expected from Blizzard, and really not sure if I like the look of it. The art style looks very Dreamworks rather than Pixar, which is much, much less appealing to me. And it looks to be following Heroes' sloppy mish mash of styles approach. In-game it looks.. very early. I'm a huge Blizz fan, so I hope it turns out (they probably won't release it if it doesn't), but not feeling it so far.

Huh.. so weird. Welp, time to catch up on LotV/WCS matches.

The art direction looks like battleborn, but okay.

It's a bit on the Pixar/ Disney side, but not so bad. Blizzard sure has an amazing CGI team though, they could turn this teaser trailer into a feature length movie and it would look damn good.

Though watching the gameplay trailer makes me wish they finished StarCraft: Ghost.

Randy Pitchford must be furious right now.

It will probably be F2P or B2P. I don't see any alternatives for this type of game.

Too bad there isn't a simple deathmatch or duel mode, would have been fun (although impossible to balance, but whatever).

Said it earlier in this thread Battleborn never attracted me this on the other does more not only because it's blizzard it is the quality and fun they put in there games. Heroes of the Storm is growing on me it's so damn fun! Love the artstyle of this game.

Looks great, I love the character design! My only concern is that I'm not convinced Blizz can make a balanced class/team shooter.

I'm ready to be proven wrong though.

StarCraft: Ghost.

Same. Never liked Battleborn, mostly because its artstyle. Which is weird, since I don't really like the "plastic toy" Blizzard's style either. But somehow Overwatch looks pretty nice and really fun to play.

Looks WAY more like TF2 than I expected, to the point that I wonder why I'd jump to this over just playing TF2.

I see a Medic, a Scout, an Engineer, a Sniper...

Really just looks like TF2 with a Blizzard/Warcraft skin stretched over it.

You didn't watch very closely if you think these MOBA hero designs are particularly similar to the TF2 classes. The fact that one has a sniper rifle and that one has a medigun looking thing are similarities, the part where one has a giant frontal shield, a bubble ultimate with berserking melee stuff, wall climbing, flight, missile barrages, grappling, blinking and rewinding....I could go on. It's extremely clear that the character designs take a lot more from the diverse but focused design style of a MOBA than the TF2 classes with a shitload of interchangable weapons and hats.

You might as well say that any FPS ever is a TF2 ripoff for having a sniper rifle, a shotgun, a melee weapon, a grenade, etc.

EDIT:
Don't get me wrong, the game CLEARLY has some TF2 influences, but I think you have to be blind not to see the major differences as well.

Heh, the ninja android dude reminded me immediately of Pure in Blade Symphony, but with different gender. It's a coincidence, but if his fighting style revolves around flanking and spinning like a madman, I'll laugh

Well now, this is a surprise. I've never played a Blizzard game and generally have no interest in the FPS genre but this has my attention. The gorgeous cartoony artstyle and diverse environments are exactly what I'd want from a modern day TimeSplitters (and remind me of the original Overstrike trailer), the class system and abilities evoke memories of Shadowrun (the last FPS I truly loved) and the high mobility available due to gadgets is one of the reasons I played Gotham City Imposters so much.

Fingers crossed for this, I really hope that the final product will continue to feel like it draws some inspiration from those games.

I want his sprint ability to be using his sword to deflect bullets as he's running.

When he gets hit he should scream "HURT ME MOAR!"

I really liked the sound of their Project Titan :(

Basically a superhero MMO, where you actually got to do the sort of things that heroes did during downtime, e.g. your 9-to-5 job.
It sounds like it could have been super popular, being able to target both the farmville/facebook clicker and the more hardcore gamer demographics. The more casual people would focus on the social aspect, the crafting and day-job related cow-clicker-esque activities (could perhaps be done via external apps so you didn't even need the client up and running on a computer) while the more hardcore players primarily played the PVP and PVE quests taking place during "Hero"-time.

It's a class based objective based team shooter. Of course it's going to have a healer, a fast moving low firepower, a big heavy damage soaking class and a sniper of some sort. But on top of those there's a bunch of others. I was a bit surprised with the amount of classes they put in the game.
I think saying it's just TF2 with Blizzard's art on it is a bit depreciative.

Mmm. If it plays like MNC or any other moba I'll have to decline. That genre makes me seethe with anger. But if it's closer to TF2, Shadowrun, Quake.. I could do for a good class based arena shooter.

Cautiously optimistic.

It's very close to Shadowrun if anything (no buying items though, but gameplay-wise). No leveling, creeps or stuff like that.

I thought this looked really great. Nice looking, fast paced, large variety of character gameplay styles, a significant amount of footage shown, and a 2015 beta.

Feeling about the same, and I'm generally not into FPS these days (nor have I been for a long time).

Keeping an eye on it.

I can't deny this game looks good, but I'm still disappointed.

This seems like Lady Gaga producing a song. You know it'll be successful, sell well, people will like it, consume it and then forget about it a week later. It may even sell better than a Queen record, but does that mean it'll have that same legendary status as Queen in the decades to come? I doubt it.

Warcraft and Starcraft are going to last. They each have an expertly crafted universe with loads of individuality and characteristic features.
Overwatch, on the other hand, looks nice but very exchangeable to me. This could well be made by any other arbitrary developer, and nothing of it looks distinct enough to make it...last.

Is it really like TF2 or are people saying that because it's a stylized objective-based shooter? It seems like so much more than a TF2 derivative.

When i think warcraft it all seems like generic western fantasy, orcs, elves, medieval setting. Same for starcraft which seems like generic sci-fi fantasy. What makes those two worlds last is Blizzards expert execution. If they can do the same for Overwatch I can see it stand the test of time.

Yeah, I agree.

If all the character skill sets are as varied and interesting as the ones shown in the gameplay trailer, and they have a large number of characters (which they will if it's the business plan), and they manage to balance it without making the abilities less interesting they will have a great game at their hands.

The game has some strong influences from TF2 but it stands far from a senseless clone.

Can't wait to play it!

Basically Bethesda's new big game is not singleplayer, and Blizzard's new big game is not singleplayer.

Blizzard is far less surprising here. Their games have always had significant multiplayer components (E.g. Starcraft) or been exclusively multiplayer (e.g. WoW or Hearthstone).

I just got done watching all character videos showcasing their special abilities.

I'm so hyped for this game.

It's a class based objective based team shooter.

It also has Payload with Overtime. Good luck spinning that as anything other than what it obviously is. :)

The key point to remember is that Blizzard making their own TF2 isn't an inherently bad thing. I'd love another very similar game to play, regardless of who makes it, or why.

This is one of the most exciting things I've seen in a long time. I loved the sniper, the monk the medic, the bow dude and the flying girl with the things.

I love the first person view, the only downside being that they probably won't sell skins for the heroes, which is something I really enjoy.

I'm pretty sure you're wrong. We will probably drown in skins and they'll make tons of money out of them.
People were crazy about them since Quake 2, and you never saw your character yourself.
