Blizzard announces Overwatch. Team based MP Shooter [Up: Trailers, Screens, More]

Woohoo!!
Looks like abullshit f2p-multiplayer only-MOBA-FPS to me. I can't wait not to play it. I really detect the stench of f2p here. All that art and animation wasted on a multiplayer shooter. lol

I made the mistake of reading some of the comments for the Overwatch cinematic on the game's YouTube channel...man, some people are just offended by joy.

When you've poured as much development effort into Titan as Blizzard has... it would seem like there should be something worth salvaging out of it right?

Anyway, trailers look hype. Might actually get me trying out this whole MOBA style genre, albeit indirectly.

Hope there's much avatar customization.

Considering people still play counter strike, tf2, and quake "wasted" is not a word I would use.

With the "heroes not classes" mantra it would be really weird to see much avatar customization. Although I think that kind of stuff is inevitable if they want to properly monetize this.

This is probably the most exciting thing I've seen from Blizzard in a while. I'm a big fan of TF2 and Dota so if this hits any of those notes I'm interested.

Also, I don't understand people complaining about it being "another competitive shooter" as if we have a ton of games like this. There's TF2, Brink...ugh, and that's about all that comes to mind. This seems absolutely nothing like the bulk of competitive military shooters that currently dominate the fps market. As someone sick of all those shooters, I'm thrilled to have another competitive fps in the market that isn't gritty, realistic or military focused.

One thing I'm wondering is are they going to expand this game like a MOBA with new heroes or is it going to be with maps and modes?

Has any of the media coverage asked about the potential of a console version yet?

I wanna play this but my PC sucks.

I haven't been able to find anything on that, but it wouldn't surprise me if this game eventually made its way to consoles considering how well Diablo 3 performed.

This looks awesome, basically TF2 but with some extra abilities.

Please don't fuck it up by making you unlock new characters the same way as HotS. That grind is awful and paying for characters in that is waaaay too expensive.

If they make it F2P with a rotation of characters every week, allow people to buy a "character pack" for 25€ or something to unlock all available and get all upcoming characters for free as well. Smite has that and it is a great deal.

The best would be that all characters are unlocked from the start and you pay for cosmetics. But this being Blizzard I don't have high hopes for that..

Here's the panel gang, if mod would add this to the first thread I'd appreciate it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPhpDEUfyOI Had to put it on youtube, my site was getting hammered.

I don't like the direction Blizzard has taken lately.

While they make high quality games, they don't appeal to me anymore. Hearthstone isn't my cup of tea, HotS is just...boring, and the TF2-arena-shooter genre isn't something I've ever liked. I'm much more into RTS and MMOs.

Oh well.

Funny, I feel the opposite. Keep killing it Blizzard!

Well here's the remains of the PvP arena of Titan. Typical blizzard play it safe with art rather than raw graphical prowess, but it looks ok. Maybe they can spice up the effects and lighting, though doubt it.

Should be highest quality due to it being a blizzard game, but there was Diablo 3. Should have killer gameplay as they were king in that department, but then HotS happened. So now we'll just have to wait and see how it plays out.

Hopefully it's not a bend you over a barrel f2p but rather a "fair" one, while still having depth to character progression. That's my biggest fear.

How does this compare to Battleborn? I get the sense Battleborn has a lot more visually going on and more drone enemies but not as much difference in classes and types.

This looks to be all PvP/objective focused with no AI enemies, so pretty much TF2 with more abilities and no leveling like a MOBA.

Battleborn is more like a MOBA where you kill "creeps", level up and fight your opponents from what I've seen.

Besides some visual candy, character introductions, and abilities showcase, what was the point of that cinematic trailer?

The bad guys smash into a museum to steal a gauntlet, they get smacked around and run off, and the good guys just put the gauntlet back in the cabinet. If the bad guys are after it, why not take it with you for protection?

I know I'm over-nerding on this, but it just seems weird to spend so much money on an otherwise high-quality pre-rendered trailer for a plot that makes absolutely no sense.

"Don't worry about the gauntlet, just leave it there. The baddies won't think to come back to steal it again."

This really does look like TF2 knockoff and the chick with the gravi gun looking weapon looked like something straight out portal. I almost feel that this is plagiarism.

...You do realize those games you like are still being made right? What with Legacy of the Void and the next WoW expansion coming up?

Not to mention that subtle dig at all these other genre you don't like are somehow not high quality games.

Eh, it's a class based shooter and it has a gun that looks a bit similar to the Portal weapon. There's plenty of other games that are very similar. Shadowrun, Monday Night Combat, PvZ: Garden Warfare, Dirty Bomb etc.

No plagiarism here, just another game in a fun genre.

Good point. Although I was thinking more in terms of the stuff you put on avatars when I posted that.

I guess this is where all the Titan assets went? Looks really good... TF2-style gameplay with a MOBA-style pool of characters. I'll give it a go when it's available.

i'm more inclined to think the sequence of events is it was StarCraft Ghost, which turned into Titan, which turned into Overwatch.

they talked about having the customization options and stuff like that that they dropped, which would make sense if the game were intended to be an MMO at some point.

also, i guess i'm curious how the lore of it all is going to work out since there won't actually be a story to play through.

i wonder if they will just have this multiplayer thing be the "main game" and have some other smaller games in the Overwatch universe where you... do stuff? who the hell knows

Might not even be a game.

They might want it to be multimedia with animation, novels, web comics/manga etc.

Don't know why there's classes when the game uses a MOBA-style character pool. Their abilities and stats already define their class.

I hope so. I love multiplayer in FPS's but the cinematic trailer certainly piqued my interest for a single player campaign as well.

Randy Pitchford must be furious right now.

There's absolutely no way this is true. The monetization of a game completely effects development.

This has either F2P w/ hats or F2P w/ hats + character unlocks written all over it, depending on whether or not they want to release new characters periodically.

Somebody asked Kaplan this in the Q&A. He said they hadn't even thought about it and basically gave the polite answer of "it's above their pay grade".

It will probably be F2P or B2P. I don't see any alternatives for this type of game.

Too bad there isn't a simple deathmatch or duel mode, would have been fun (although impossible to balance, but whatever).

Mmm. If it plays like MNC or any other moba I'll have to decline. That genre makes me seethe with anger. But if it's closer to TF2, Shadowrun, Quake.. I could do for a good class based arena shooter.

Cautiously optimistic.
