Blizzard announces Overwatch. Team based MP Shooter [Up: Trailers, Screens, More]

nope no joke. I like old school large spammy games.

Played on 32 player unreal tournament 1999/2004 servers, 64 player battlefield 1942 servers, 32 player counterstrike/natural selection 1/team fortress classic/ team fortress 2 servers.

Anything under 20 just feels boring.

Only fps I felt was fun with a lower player count was l4d.

Alright so old woman archetypes are very rare in video games but how would you design an old woman action hero? i haven't seen any in comic books or anime or films so i doubt anything like that has been done before.
Would it really look that strange to have, say, Mercy or Pharah be 20 years older? A super simple existing example of this: Major in Q3A, who looks like a veteran with graying hair and all. I don't see why it would be difficult to design an old woman combatant.

If this will be updated and you can buy characters

Also, if he wants to play with a controller, let him. If you're truly convinced he'll be easy fodder, that's good for you, right?

It's easy to want controller support in single player games, in something like this (competetive team based online) it's basically just begging to drag teams down, and anyone with half a brain knows that a controller is a huge hindrance in an FPS - no it doesn't matter when you're playing against other console gamers but on a pc it's a death sentence.

I can't disagree that playing from a couch with a controller has a nice appeal to it, but not certain it's viable until console only versions come out.

It goes without saying that I wouldn't want it to impact implementation of the primary control scheme (with sticky/auto aim or somesuch).

Still, simply having the option built-in instead of having to use third party programs like XPadder would be nice for those who enjoy playing on a controller. I think the skill variance within the playerbase of any Blizzard title will be large enough so that even people using controllers will be able to find others that perform on their same skill level even though they might be using a faster and more precise control method.

Very indifferent on this. I like it in concept, but the gameplay looks janky which I did not expect from blizzard at all. I am also not sure about the artstyle but on the other side glad it's something different from them.

Looks great. Like some have said, a little TF2, a little UT, maybe a touch of MOBA in the character variety and seemingly cooldown abilities? Right up my alley. And the stuff they've been doing elsewhere makes me confident they'll think of a variety of fun modes and objectives so things don't get too stale.

Well it's official, using janky to describe something could mean nearly anything.

Haha, sorry. I guess I mean it's not looking as fluid as TF2 for example. Some animations are just too hectic imo (like the turret building) but maybe it's just the editing of the video that's weirding me out a bit.

My brother and I are pretty excited for it, hopefully it hits beta soon. I hate it when games get announced and then take so long to come out that they're erased from my radar.

I get the keyboard and mouse club, I put 300 plus days into MMOs, but at 35 I have no desire to put my face into a computer screen.
I never get this correlation people build between PC gaming and age. In fact, most older gamers I know play on PC.

That said, if people want to play a competitive aiming-based game with a controller by all means let them. Just don't put them on my team.

ROFL @ Mercy being "chubby".

Is this real world?

Anyways I have watched the whole Blizzcon panel (88 minutes). Some obvious observations from there:

- stuff like gender of the characters (male Tracer, female Hanzo etc.) is a "fantastic idea" and Blizzard cannot comment on it any further = obvious paid DLC
- stuff like different skins (Tjornborn WoW skin) or other cosmetic items is a "terrific idea" and Blizzard cannot comment on it any further = obvious paid DLC
- no skill upgrades. Blizzard tested them internally and found it was too confusing given the number of characters. I can buy that.
- achievements and long-term character progression will be in the game. Kaplan designed this for WoW and is also designing the steps for Overwatch.
- re: hero balance. There are 4 main guys (1 lead and 3 vice) designing the game and balancing it. They both have 46 years of experience in game design *and* balancing. They balanced WoW and SC1/ SC2. Impressive - no fears here.
- they do not know if it will be F2P or paid. Now this is an interesting point. Do they make the game $50 and sell 1, 2, 3, 4 maybe 5 million copies upfront making ~$250M or do they make the game free and sell $0.99 $2.99 cosmetic items? In that case to reach $250 they would have to sell ~100-250 million DLC items. Sounds like a very large number no? 5 m copies vs 250 m DLC items. I wonder what Blizzard will do.
- the game is getting amazing reviews on the showfloor. For me it could be released RIGHT NOW and it would sell millions and get 90+ metacritic score. Blizzard knows this and that is why they have a BIG HEADACHE with the pricing. They do not want to underprice or overprice the title.

As for me, I really disliked TF2 but this game looks amazing to me. Dat Blizzard magic.

Wait, please tell me that only one person said that she was "chubby". PLEASE.

Problem with pricing the game as an up-front ~$50 is that their main competition is all $0 (TF2, MOBAs, CS:GO goes on sale for like $4 every other week)

LoL has proven they can sell skins and characters to people and make hundreds of millions a year, I think blizzard would be doing themselves a major disservice by pricing this game anything but free.

Yeah. I'm even surprised they didn't make LotV free...

Honest question: it there something wrong with the word "chubby"? It's true that she doesn't look chubby at all to me, but I feel like some of you reacted so comically flabbergasted to that statement.

Yeah. I'm even surprised they didn't make LotV free...

I think that makes sense, as that game at least has a fully fleshed out single player campaign which people will accept paying for. Overwatch is multiplayer only, and I just don't see how they can justify charging for it.

I can only really see the business model being free 2 play. I would love to be proven wrong but if its competing with tf2 that's the way it has to go.

I also feel that they are going to charge for individual characters similar to HotS. i would like to see the Dota 2 model or even the smite model (single payment to unlock all current and future characters) but i doubt that's going to be the case. I just hope they don't make the grind too unbearable.

Would it really look that strange to have, say, Mercy or Pharah be 20 years older? A super simple existing example of this: Major in Q3A, who looks like a veteran with graying hair and all. I don't see why it would be difficult to design an old woman combatant.

Ya I can see that work.

I would like the pricing model be nearer to what DOTA2 is. Something like you have all characters available, but there's a huge array of skins, announcer voice packs, HUD skins etc you have to pay for if you want them. I wouldn't mind paying here and there for those kind of things if I played DOTA2 giving me hours and hours of enjoyment. I would totally buy a Tuxedo Winston skin.

lol all the edgelord kids gonna be playing reaper

Hanzo looks amazing. Reaper looks cool too but I can already tell he's gonna be a popular pick, especially with bratty teens. I'm probably gonna play Bastion or Mercy.

Yeah Reaper looks like the hero for Edge McEdginton the 3rd

I like Tracers rewind ability out of all the skills they showed

Jump in, kill someone and drop a grenade, rewind out and you're safe

I really like Tracer the moment she came on screen from the cinematic just quirky personality and also a few others like Winston that's what i like about Blizzard the personality of each character has it's own thing it hooks me right on and want to know of them for example like Arthas you know what happend in WC3 and later Wotlk etc.

uh

Not if hes on my team.

Played a lot this weekend and the turret robot is OP as heck. I had a friend set up one with me at the corners outside the enemy spam and they couldn't make it out 20 feet past the doors. The crossfire was too much.

You do realize that Overwatch doesn't have Deathmatch/ Team DM, right?

To me it just sounds more like, we're being polite and not outright saying 'no'.

Artistic vision and all that.

For a purely multiplayer game with no single player campaign and who's nearest competition is a F2P? Unless something changes it's all but certain that Overwatch would be F2P.

Yeah, I don't see them using any other F2P style than HoTS. I just hope they make characters a bit easier to unlock in it. Gold accumulation in HoTS is pretty pathetic considering some characters are 10k gold.
