Welcome to the Official Sonic Boom Thread, we're glad you're here! Before we begin though, here are a few things to keep in mind.
  1. This is not the OT for the comics or TV show. If you want to discuss Team Sonic's awesome adventures in print, on screen, and elsewhere, head on over to the non-game OT.
  2. Do not disrupt the thread by posting innapropriate images.
  3. See number 2.
  4. Don't bother posting if your only intention is to stir up an argument and troll the community, go elsewhere.
  5. When posting with some ambiguity about the game, please make sure you are clear to which title you are referring to; Shattered Crystal & Rise Of Lyric are 2 totally different games.
Now that that's out of the way, let's get started!

Game Informer: 4/10
Playing two-player co-op comes with a hefty price, though. The already rough framerate becomes laughably low, and the textures and lighting take a huge hit. There are also some four-player competitive and cooperative minigames, but a few wave-based arena maps and platforming sequences aren't enough to justify gathering up willing friends.
Slant: 2 Out Of 5
It's an extraordinarily bad sign when the television show based off a video game is better than the source material itself, but that's the case here. Even for the most hardcore fans of the famous blue blur, avoiding Rise of Lyric and instead tuning into Cartoon Network on Saturday mornings is the best way to achieve an easily digestible Sonic Boom fix.
GameSpot: 2/10
Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric is a failure at some basic levels of gaming. While it's understandable that a franchise may want to move beyond the simple elegance of its origins, a muddled web of poorly connected and even more poorly executed systems is not the answer. The Sonic name deserves better than this, and so do consumers.
Hardcore Gamer: 2.5/5
It’s admirable that Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric tries so many new things, but every path it follows is a dead end.
IGN: 4.3/10
Its exploration is so-so, its brawling is tedious, its characters are annoying, and the only stages where it feels like a Sonic game are the ones most likely to suffer technical problems.

Have a copy of the game and are enjoying it, or did you find the most insane glitch or something like that? Share it in the thread, and it will go here. Hopefully, Miiverse will be enabled for the title soon!

Gonna crosspost from the community thread.

Honestly, and I can only speak for the first hour, but Rise Of Lyric is NOT shit, and it is nowhere near Sonic 06 levels. I had a one-time collision glitch which I could not replicate.

Yes, framerate sometimes isn't as high as it should be, but there is NO tearing, and in single player, performs a LOT better than those video clips I saw yesterday.

Honestly, I am having fun with this game and enjoying it. not in an "ironic" way, but I really like the atmosphere, characters, and the background score. Right now, this game is not shit, and not bad, not at all.

I think my biggest complaint so far is that Rise Of Lyric has no Miiverse community. Is it just not up, or is it not getting one?

Amazing title and OP.

Played the demo on 3DS and I wasn't quite feeling it. :(

Wii U one looks worse so I'm passing on it. Shame though. This OT will be better than the game.

The show looks like something the kids will love and eat up though.

The show is awesome, but please go to the other OT to discuss it!

Honestly, the demo of Shattered Crystal was enjoyable to me, much more than I expected to be honest. Can't afford it just yet, but I am definitely picking it up in the future, if only to fully complete Rise Of Lyric.
Honest question: anyone out there actually buying this with hopes it will still be good?

Me, and it's solid so far. not excellent, not polished, but solid. It is kinda like the opposite of Lost World a bit, a game I hated, a game I think very lowly of.

Excellent OT! Especially with the banner :) Oh well this game will not be the best Sonic game but it's not the worse either. Those open world elements look kinda neat TBH. I need to try the 3DS demo.

Good job Huelen!

ROL looks like it's either going to be an "okay" game, or an absolute trainwreck. Either way is entertaining.

Felt this way when I watched the first 30 minutes, this looks nowhere near being shit/Sonic 06.

I wonder if the crapfest starts later in the game, or if it's just the usual forum hyperbole

Could someone explain it?

Remember Sonic the Hedgehog for PS3 and 360? It's commonly referred to as Sonic 06, since it doesn't have an actual title (and because it came out in 06, obviously).

It's also pretty atrocious. The title is referring to Sonic 06 because a lot of people (myself included) are skeptical about Sonic Boom / expecting a similarly disastrous game.

EDIT: Beaten.

I'm still very skeptical about this game. So far, aside from the original poster, everyone I've heard who's been able to play the game early don't have much good to say about it. Plus, I just don't like what I see or hear myself. Cobi described it as the werehog levels, only even slower and the combat is even more shallow. Considering I hated the werehog stages.....that sounds awful. Even if the game isn't as glitchy as those gifs made it out to be, the game just looks very dull to me.

Sonic the Hedgehog Boom literally has everything; platforming--some of it amid situations you simply will not believe--high-speed chases, close quarters combat, multiple vehicles, flying, speed zones, character customization, real time cinemas (skillfully acted--this is Sega's best localization to date), beautiful CG, telekinesis, RPG elements, open-world exploration, rail-grinding, rampant diversity, epic bosses, a fantastic soundtrack, a beautiful princess to save--you actually spend a level carrying her--and next-gen visuals that make you happy to be alive. You simply can't ask for more out of an action game. Mission accomplished. Sonic is born anew.

That's good to hear. Lost World was just not fun to me, if it's the opposite of that then I think I want to play it. Wish Redbox had Wii U games.

i liked the way truesonic described the game its not a bad game just not a good sonic game but from what i have seem reminds me alot of early naughty dog games.

But is it a good "Sonic Boom" game? It's a very different take on the franchise so different rules apply.

Pretty much what I expected.

I was mailed my copy early for some reason and have played through 35% of it since Sunday. (According to the save file.)

The game itself is a big mix of fun ps2-mascot-era inspired platforming segments, tediously basic combat arenas, and so-so Sonic-Dash-esque autorun sequences. It's a radically different direction for the franchise; one that shares way more in common with Jak, Sly, Ratchet, LEGO and Skylanders than it does with previous Sonic games.

That might sound great to you, or it might sound like the antithesis of what you want from a game that says "Sonic" on it. But it's moot, because even if you ARE a Sonic fan who is also coincidentally into this kind of game (as I am), you'll find that this particular one is hampered with a pile of technical problems and performance issues that are severe enough to wreck chunks of the game.

In some areas -- particularly the autorun speed segments -- the frame rate dips so low that the game becomes borderline unplayable. In others, potentially interesting environments and hubs are weirdly vacuous or undetailed -- as though they had to be emptied and stripped back to run smoothly -- which sucks a lot of the fun out of the exploration component. And activating the two-player co-op -- arguably the most unique addition the game makes to the genre -- makes the performance even worse. I don't know what happened. But it doesn't feel finished.

If you want your Sonic to actually play like Sonic, you'll find this entire Boom enterprise completely baffling and pointless. But if you're actually into this genre, it's maybe a little worse... because you'll find yourself liking a lot of the game, while constantly feeling that special unique "what could have been" pain that only ever comes from playing interesting but underbaked games. I'm definitely compelled to finish it, but the entire time I've been playing it, I've found myself saying "this is cool!", "augh, this COULD have been cool!", and "yiiiikes" in relatively equal proportions.

Are there rankings in this game? If yes, how difficult is it to get the best ranking and what factors into the rankings?

Seriously, I'm in the 2nd area (first crystal), and am having lots of fun!

please keep posting impressions.
I can understand people hating it, but I'm still interested (at least next spring in the bargain bins) in the Wii U version. I like 3D action platformers, and this reminds me of Spyro/Jak/Crash old days (a feeling only Skylander was able to keep intact in the past few years...and maybe Knack, but I don't have a PS4)
