Sonic Boom |OT| Sonic 2014

There aren't really any performance rankings, no. Your completion of levels is judged entirely by how many of the secret widgets you found, like Sly or Ratchet.

Still can't quite get a read on this, kinda still interested despite the videos from yesterday, but not sure about dropping $50-$60 on it. Will keep an eye on it though as it's been a while since we've had a platformer like this.

This should at least mean I won't have to suffer for endless hours as I had in Sonic '06 to get all S-Ranks. I just hope that rankings will return with the next proper Sonic game.

You actually played the levels in 06 more than once? Lol.

But yeah ranking should surely return in next years Sonic Team game.

I was mailed my copy early for some reason and have played through 35% of it since Sunday. (According to the save file.)

The game itself is a big mix of fun ps2-mascot-era inspired platforming segments, tediously basic combat arenas, and so-so Sonic-Dash-esque autorun sequences. It's a radically different direction for the franchise; one that shares way more in common with Jak, Sly, Ratchet, LEGO and Skylanders than it does with previous Sonic games.

That might sound great to you, or it might sound like the antithesis of what you want from a game that says "Sonic" on it. But it's moot, because even if you ARE a Sonic fan who is also coincidentally into this kind of game (as I am), you'll find that this particular one is hampered with a pile of technical problems and performance issues that are severe enough to wreck chunks of the game.

In some areas -- particularly the autorun speed segments -- the frame rate dips so low that the game becomes borderline unplayable. In others, potentially interesting environments and hubs are weirdly vacuous or undetailed -- as though they had to be emptied and stripped back to run smoothly -- which sucks a lot of the fun out of the exploration component. And activating the two-player co-op -- arguably the most unique addition the game makes to the genre -- makes the performance even worse. I don't know what happened. But it doesn't feel finished.

If you want your Sonic to actually play like Sonic, you'll find this entire Boom enterprise completely baffling and pointless. But if you're actually into this genre, it's maybe a little worse... because you'll find yourself liking a lot of the game, while constantly feeling that special unique "what could have been" pain that only ever comes from playing interesting but underbaked games. I'm definitely compelled to finish it, but the entire time I've been playing it, I've found myself saying "this is cool!", "augh, this COULD have been cool!", and "yiiiikes" in relatively equal proportions.

Thanks for this. It's roughly what I expected from RoL.

I enjoyed the Shattered Crystal demo but not enough to buy it full price. I'm also baffled by how they've managed to overcomplicate such a traditionally simple game. Spin-dash, boost, air dash, homing attack, lasso, 4 swappable characters... it's not necessarily bad, I guess, but it seems they just tossed in everything they could think of.

I don't get the semi love for the 3DS version. I thought the demo was absolutely awful and the worst first impression I've had of a Sonic platformer since the shitty Game Gear games. Wii U version looks so much better to me.

The first time I played it I thought it was garbage and turned if off after 2 minutes. I went back to it the next day and actually had fun, although I'm not really sure why.

I find it odd that the demo only has 8 uses. I think that's the lowest I've seen.

Apparently there is a really ugly game breaking bug.
Glad I caught that, will read up on it.
please keep posting impressions.
I can understand people hating it, but I'm still interested (at least next spring in the bargain bins) in the Wii U version. I like 3D action platformers, and this reminds me of Spyro/Jak/Crash old days (a feeling only Skylander was able to keep intact in the past few years...and maybe Knack, but I don't have a PS4)
Currently in the area where you meet
Past Maia, after the Shadow fight
. Only new glitch that has popped up since I started is that Amy's Hammer suddenly appeared in the middle of the battle.
So have you gotten to the infamous I Forgot How To Even bit yet, Huelen?
No I have not, and I am trying not to watch many vids as I don't want t o spoil the story for myself.

Honestly, this is how I take it so far.

Lost World was a polished turd.
Rise Of Lyric is a gem in the rough.

Well my nephew is having a blast with it.

Finally a decent linear 3D platformer for Sonic that is not confusing as hell for the kids.

I'll will double dip once my nephew finish his session.

Seriously people with kids...THIS IS YOUR HOLIDAY GOTY !

Edit: talking about the superior WiiU version of course.

i mean there's still smash bros., captain toad, littlebigplanet3, pokemon oras....

My nephew and neice are 6 and 4 years old. They don't speak English so Pokemon is out of the picture.

SSBU is just waayy to advanced for them. So I'm keeping that for me and my friends.

Captain Toads is a puzzle game. Yaah...they are only into Mario and WiiU party and Nintendo land

Some level I only played twice (because I got the S rank first go and collected the medals (with a friend's assitance) on the second go), but many levels I've played numerous times. The friend who helped me with the medals has played through the game (1000/1000) twice and helped to people do the same, so he has seen four complete play throughs!

I think Captain Toad would be the perfect game for kids of that age, honestly. I can imagine that playing it with them would be a blast.

EDIT: This isn't the thread to talk about that, though.

I don't think Lost World was either polished or a turd. Maybe polished in the sense it doesn't really have glitches, but the game design itself was anything but polished. I don't think it was a turd. I think it had aspects of turd in it that ruined the good aspects the game had. It had a lot of potential that wasn't realised due to some poor design decisions.

Knuckles is ALWAYS on!

I think you're underestimating how kids play games. I played Smash and many games around that age range (I'm 19 now). Give them a shot. If anything, Captain Toad would improve their ability to solve problems. They might not grasp it right away, but kids make time to get better at games.

So I really need to hit the hay, but I will leave you all with one final comment.

I don't usually use the Gamepad to play a game, unless it's forced, and I don't usually game for long stints, and my gamePad has always had great battery life...

It died, while playing the game. My battery died, and I was forced to plug it in, and continue playing.

This hasn't happened to me in YEARS. I think I'm pretty engrossed in it, and I think I know why.

I love the Archieverse and I love SatAM. From atmosphere, to music, this fits! I know in my heart this is the absolute closest we will ever get to a SatAM Sonic game, so I am really, really enjoying this one.

Can't wait to hear some GAFer impressions, specially of the game I won't get for a while (Shattered Crystal).

that is really good to hear.
I repeat, I perfectly understand GAF hate toward the game, especially because its "non-Sonicness", but I've always been interested in it, being a 3Dactionplatform lover.
I'll look for a good deal for the Wii U version.

So as someone whose enjoyed the Ratchet and Clank and Jak and Daxter games but has never owned a Sonic game or played one outside of a few tid bits here and there would I be more inclined enjoy this game not knowing the levels of mediocrity Sonic games have reached throughout the years? Basically going into this with a clean slate pertaining to Sonic.

Small correction, if I may? The engine is simply called CRYENGINE now- no more numbering as we used to do.

Cheers :)

I can't answer that because, well...

I own like 4-5 Rachet games and haven't beaten a single one, and have never gotten more than 90 minutes into the first Jak. That's what shocks me the most! I usually don't have games like this click with me, but this one does, so it's hard for me to recommend it to a Jak fan, simply because though I enjoy this game, these games usually don't click with me.

Now I really need to hit the hay! Laters.

EDIT: ZSaberLink, only 2 glitches so far; the hammer and the one clipping thing I couldn't replicate. So not polished, but solid so far, from my play through so far.

For me, every Sonic game has generally impressed me at first (demos, etc.) and then sometimes I didn't actually like them. I actually loved the demos I played of Sonic Lost World and really still find it hard to believe that the rest of the game is really that bad (never bought it b/c of the reviews and b/c I had other things to play). I played about 15 minutes of Sonic Boom Wii U at PAX and it just was boring and clunky to me. Happy to see you're enjoying it Huelen, but the game seriously just looks rushed from everything I'm seeing. Was there a day 1 patch or something?

Huh, that really puts a bizzare perspective on your recommendation. Not that I don't believe that you're actually enjoying it, but it's odd to hear that the mainline Ratchet and Jak games which are critically acclaimed, polished, and refined action platformers don't click with you, yet boom does. When you get the chance, I'd love for you to go into more detail explaining why the aforementioned games fall flat for you.

Whether this game ends up a trainwreck or middling to decent platformer, I feel like I'll get enjoyment in some form. Sonic 06 is still one of my top guilty pleasures.

Well, now that I've read some of these impressions, I'm actually kinda hyped. :/ Eh, I'll probably buy it regardless, I mean I bought Lost World, and enjoyed it despite knowing that it had it's flaws so what the hell.

I'm surprised you aren't reviewing this one; I was eagerly awaiting your thoughts on the game.

It's planned that I review the game but first, Nintendo / Sega have to give us a review copy.
