Why would they. It will still sell gangbuster. Marketing has ensured that.

Even if they get good coverage on sales this year, all they have done is publicized their seemingly mess-of-a-game. Eventually people stop buying.

I have come full circle to this series that I did with COD... Finally you realize its a cash-grab. I bought every COD, then bought every AC, until now.
 
Most of the time review copies of a game are held back because it's not good. But I suspect that Rogue's review copies were held back because it's better than Unity. Ubisoft didn't want the re-skin overshadowing their shiny new thing.

Totally agree. That's what I was thinking as well.
 
This is what I would have preferred. Considering Rogue is the far more interesting game of the two anyway, I would have accepted a cross-gen release if it meant Unity had a chance of being good.

The main complaints seem to be that it doesn't shake up the series enough. Rogue looks like more of the same than Unity.
 
8 Concerning Things I Experienced in Assassin's Creed Unity

If Assassin’s Creed Unity represents the future direction of AAA video games, I seriously question the future health and legitimacy of this industry.

These are 8 real things I experienced within Assassin’s Creed Unity’s first 2-3 hours:

I tried to open a treasure chest, but was told I needed the Assassin’s Creed companion app to open it, with no additional information or context.

I tried to open another treasure chest, and was told I needed to sign up for Assassin’s Creed Initiates to open it.

I tried to open a third treasure chest, and was told I needed to upgrade Arno’s lockpicking skill.

I upgraded Arno’s lockpicking skill, and was told my skill level still wasn’t high enough to open that chest. I gave up.

When I paused the game, the second option in the pause menu is an eStore that lets you spend real money on time-saving boosts, bonus in-game currency, and so-on.

I saw a woman floating through the air.

I heard the same line of dialogue 5 times during an early-game chase mission.

I experienced my character flip all around on the side of a building instead of climb through the window like I wanted.

None of the above includes subjective elements I found troublesome, including confusing and uninteresting “modern day” moments, trial and error mission design, and soulless NPCs.

This is a $60 video game set in revolutionary Paris that continually spams you to sign up for Ubisoft services via locked-away in-game content. This is a $60 video game that paces out unlockables and upgrades at the exact speed that Ubisoft wanted, but then offers to sell you “time savers.”

With all of this in mind, I still don’t necessarily disagree with Marty’s positive review. Unity’s vision of Paris is very impressive. Its story is interesting - I’m enjoying the game’s central intrigue. Plenty of the side missions are satisfying, especially the murder mysteries. My personal score would be lower, but the game has its merits.

But all the issues I outlined above are more than just disappointing - they’re dangerous. They’re undermining. As someone that truly loves the video game medium, they’re downright scary.

Master Chief Collection’s matchmaking is broken, and multiplayer requires a huge day one patch. Titanfall is dead. The PS4’s 2.0 firmware update continues to cause major problems. The days of going to a midnight launch event and coming home to experience pure launch day gaming bliss seem to be over.

I completely understand the need to up revenue per user above $60 for big-budget AAA games. This is a tough business to be in. But it has to be done in a way that doesn’t compromise the integrity of your gameplay, and doesn’t test the patience of your players. If you’re a game developer, and you care about the long term health and sustainability of this business, please do what you can to ensure we’re not creating the darkest timeline.

Except they completely changed the stealth element of the game, by basically using a simplified version of what they did in the latest splinter cell. It (imho) completely changes for the better the way you play the missions, since you don't have to follow a set path from one point to another that the level designer planned for you. It allows for a lot more freedom in how you plan an assassination, much more than any other AC game since AC1 at least.
Pretty sad that this vastly improved games design will get completely overlooked because of the technical problems. But it's Ubis own fault I guess.

That's a big stretch. I wouldn't compare this to Blacklist's stealth, that's far too kind. Cover system is a mess for one.

is the combat much better now. i only played AC1 and 2 and the combat was too easy and boring.
 
I expected Arno to be the new Ezio, and the story to be the best yet. I assumed that Ubisoft, a french company, would grind Unity into some amazing. But hear that the story and that the assassins creed universe is boring and a disappointing, is extremely disappointing to me.

AC games for me are fun to play because of the momentum of the story. To have made a bad story, you piss me off having to watch your cut scenes, trying to explain context to me I wouldnt otherwise get. How more unsatisfying can it be?

And worse than Assassins Creed 3? Man. I hope AC Rogue will have a better story than this, because this is freaking tragic. But I pre-ordered so I will give it a go, but by this point I guess I am just waiting for DAI to pre-load so I can move on.

If AC Rogue turns out to be good I will buy that once it hit steam!
 
1.) Marketing and review departments are kept as separate as possible for most big websites/magazines, to the point where reviewers sometimes won't even know the names of who's in marketing.

2.) Two reviews by two different people. Plus after hearing Steve Burns on their podcast being able to explain in greater detail, I can see why he gave it a 6/10. I may not agree with the score on a personal level, but it's completely justified with the direction he was coming from.

Jeff Gertsman (I probably butchered that) and his review of Kane and Lynch for GameSpot and resulting actions is my response to your item #1.

That is disappointing. Sure it didn't live up to the hype and promise, but Destiny was and is not the broken mess AC Unity is...
 
Some of that shit looked like it was taken right out of Ringu.

Is this the first horror entry in the series?

So true. Its funny I was talking to another creator for my channel and that is actually what we discussed. Some of the bugs look like they are on purpose and from a horror movie.
 
8 Concerning Things I Experienced in Assassin's Creed Unity

Yeah, I covered the same problem at the end of our review.

The negative side is all the damn online account connections needed to fully enjoy the game. Here's an example: around the city there's different colored treasure chests appearing on your map. White chests are simple; find them and open them. Red chests require lockpicking. Blue chests require you to use the Assassin's Creed Unity Companion app - which is rather impressive and robust for an add-on experience - to access them. Finally, yellow chests need a valid AC Initiates account to open.

Most of my playthrough, the Initiates site was simply down. Even when it was up, I needed to download the Uplay app, log into Uplay, go back into the game, try to open the chest, load up Initiates in my web browser, create an Initiates account, and then hope the whole thing would sync up in-game. It was annoying juggling accounts and apps just to open a chest. Now that it's all hooked-up, it's not as trying, but starting the whole machine up seemed needlessly complex.

This is what happens when you rush games out and stick to a horrendous yearly cycle.

This needed 6 months more in development. Maybe even 1 more fucking year so they could have come up with something worthwhile.
 
I'm OK with the game scoring bad, I mean a lot of people still enjoy badly reviewed games for many reasons. But the microtransaction stuff and companion app is just awful.
 
That's a big stretch. I wouldn't compare this to Blacklist's stealth, that's far too kind. Cover system is a mess for one.

I'm not at all a stealth game player, so I honestly couldn't really tell you. I thought it looked quite a bit like what they did in SC, and I have no doubt they simplified it a lot since I managed to actually use the system and even enjoy it, which never happened to me ever in the stealth elements of any AC ever before.

Much better maybe not. They tweaked it a bit with the new perfect counter system, but mainly they made fights against more than 3 people (at higher level at least) much more challenging. I died quite a few times when running around trying to find the chests in the most difficult districts of the city only to find them with 4 or 5 high level guards on it. It's the first AC game where I actually used the smoke bombs to run off a fight.
