Sonic Boom Boom: Review thread

Actually higher scores than I expected, and I don't mean to be a jerk, I just expected very low scores after all the glitches and problems with the game.

Maybe the game would be half decent platforming-wise if it wasn't broken to hell? hmm..

Oh Sonic :(

Clearly these games are disappointing. It still kinda saddens me to see one of my favourite franchises go down the toilet.

What's worse is that these aren't just new Sonic games... it's Sega's attempt to reboot the entire Sonic franchise. It sucks to know that there's possibly more of this crap to come in the near future.

Sonic Boom actually broke the cycle because no one ever thought it would be any good.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't slightly interested in the game cause of the first trailer. Besides the Skrillex I think they did a good job at at least making the game look like it'd be worth playing BECAUSE it wasn't a traditional sonic game.

Sonic Riders was also not a traditional sonic game.

Sonic Boom had a few "so bad it's funny" scenes in the stream I was watching.

I should check out the show sometime.

I heard the show was decent, I watched the first episode and it seemed passable. Its apparently giving Cartoon Network a big ratings boost so thats good.

Sonic Riders was also not a traditional sonic game.
It was also better than the regular series installments that came out right around it (Shadow the Hedgehog and 2006). Seriously, I think it's a good racer, with some neat battle modes too.

This whole Sonic Boom project was cynical and calculated and has been punished for its overall mediocrity and pandering to some marketers' playbook, but I wonder how much of the fault, if any, lies with Big Red Button. My impression is that SEGA rushed this game and the 3DS counterpart by Sanzaru to release, yet now the show has been placed in a deathly time slot.

I actually liked that game, the biggest issue was a steep learning curve, but it was decent iirc. The new characters were kind of cool and inoffensive, just regular thieves, and there was a cool anime opening. Plus SEGA guest characters.

The sequels apparently got shittier, which sucks as it had potential.

I don't remember Sonic being so kid-centric back in its heyday. I mean, it was never particularly for the 18+ demographic but it was something anybody could enjoy.

I understand they make these games because parents will always buy them but why can't they take a few breaks with a "real" sonic every now and then

Is anyone seriously surprised? I don't think this game falls in to the Sonic cycle. It's a tie in to a TV show, I don't think there ever was a chance. Sega probably just wanted to shit out a Sonic game for the Wii U while they were still contractually obligated to, so their next game they actually tried with could reach a wider audience.

Or, somewhat less cynically, they had a game with issues that they could not fix in time for the TV show, so they had to keep what the had. Isn't Big Red Button former Naughty Dog devs? It's hard to believe this is the best they could come up with.

"Oh when the saints!"

Definitely "So bad" everyone except sonic seems so out of character

My impression of the show is that it's stupid fun but there's no point to the Sonic characters being there. It's sorta like Teen Titans Go! where they took established characters and put them in wacky situations, but with Sonic Boom there's no "normal" Sonic to juxtapose with because they also changed the characters. I guess it would be like if aliens saw a blurry photograph of a Sonic game and tried to make a TV show based on what they thought it was about, or if the Sonic characters got into an accident that horribly disfigured their bodies and they decided to start a sketch comedy act. It's a good show. It's just... why make it look like Sonic?

I didn't like it at all when it came out. Sonic Chronicles, the Bioware RPG sonic game looked really interesting at the time but I heard it was ok to mediocre.

Like your entire statement makes no sense.

" why are the characters they wrote the dialogue for in the show they wrote the dialogue for"

... What? Thats not a criticism, like sonic boom deserves a lot of it. But what you are saying isn't even a criticism, you just said " why does this tv show have to sonic in it" Why does anything have to have anything in it. What are you even saying

I think the point of the criticism is that the characters in the show are only sonic characters by name they are just a blank slate of tropes that could literally be ANYONE, they just happen to be Sonic characters because that's the title of the show

Now we all get spoiled by the amazing writing in the comic from time to time.

That said, " they are just a bunch of tropes"

Welcome to toy commercials B, power rangers, TMNT, and Transformers are on your right

as a sonic fan, i wish we could say we didn't see this coming from rather early on, but there it is.

Generations & Colors were both fantastic by me, and ive enjoyed the time i spent so far with Lost World. guess i'll hold out hope for a return to form.

Meanwhile...

fuckin' seriously

I don't know what your argument is supposed to be by mentioning toy commercials and power rangers, other than defending a cash grab because it's sonic. I'm just saying that his criticism of the show is valid because it's right.

I don't feel like that's a valid argument because you could basically lobb that at any character in two episodes of a show.

fuckin' seriously

It doesn't make money.
