Sonic Boom Boom: Review thread

so this game is basically Sega's gift to internet meme posterity?

those gifs, penny arcade being relevant... great scott!

This game has become the true successor to Sonic '06. It's amazing how a completely different teams with a completely different engine (The Cryengine, no less!) can achieve the exact same results. How is that even possible?

Just stick to Sonic All Stars racing, Sega. These are about the only games with Sonic's name attached to them that have been legitimately great.

It was also better than the regular series installments that came out right around it (Shadow the Hedgehog and 2006). Seriously, I think it's a good racer, with some neat battle modes too.

This whole Sonic Boom project was cynical and calculated and has been punished for its overall mediocrity and pandering to some marketers' playbook, but I wonder how much of the fault, if any, lies with Big Red Button. My impression is that SEGA rushed this game and the 3DS counterpart by Sanzaru to release, yet now the show has been placed in a deathly time slot.
I'm also reluctant to blame the devs. In a lot of ways they were reliant on the creative team of the show, and games generally take longer to get together than shows - I can easily believe these games only had a year dev time max. It's also likely Sanzaru treated this as a B level game. Their main dev focus is almost certainly Sly 5 - that series is their passion and there's obviously going to be a 2016 game to go with the movie.

I hope this doesn't kill BRB - I suspect they could put a good game together with the right support. Hell, they could make Jak 4 (if ND definitely is never going back to it, which I don't think is a guarantee yet). At least Sanzaru is safe.

Like Sonic would say (and he does) in the game: "time to get wet"

.... (from what i saw on stream, the game deserves lower scores)

You won't see a lot of reviews from Italy, Nintendo is not giving out codes for downloading the game. really shameful.

I have fucking loved janky as hell 3D platformers since the PS1/N64 days, so I am buying this as soon as it is less than $20.

I miss games like 40 Winks. Bad games that are bad but you love them anyways for whatever reason.

First and second post double killing it.

Colours/Generations sequel next year please, now that they are out of this awkward Nintendo deal they clearly weren't comfortable with.

Sorry, but for me that is autopilot, so we have to agree to disagree.
Nah man, you're just fuckin wrong. While the player is Bella skilled and makes that shit look easy as fuck, it really isntt for the common player. This can only be a achieved through total mastery of the stage. He took a lot of high risk jumps and that curve in the beginning is way harder that it looks especially while boosting, its easy to fly off and die. To understand. The complexity you have yo know that this is a player at their best. To get a grasp of how hard empire city is you're gonna have to someone. Casually playing it.

I apologize for phone errors.

No, you are wrong.

Mastering unleashed style 3D levels takes a fairly high level of skill.

If you are boosting your way through the game:
1. You are gonna be shitty at it
2. You'll miss out on a lot of swcrets
3. You are playing the game wrong.

This will be an interesting and entertaining thread.

I started playing this game (co-op) yesterday. I expected the worst based on the Internet reviews. I'm not far in at all, but I haven't found a single glitch so far. Frame rate issues are minor, and the graphics are a bit rough but not completely terrible on our 32" TV. The dialog and cutscenes are cheesy, but it's just Sonic the Hedgehog.

I will continue playing this game. Hopefully the first 30 minutes weren't the best.

Don't forget, you WILL die. ALOT.

I'm complete garbage at Sonic Unleashed, which kind of surprises me because Colours and Generations are some of my favourite platformers.

Unleashed is a lot more technical than both of those games put together (and has stiffer controls, too).

The controls and level design improved for the better IMO.

I enjoy Sonic a lot more when it's god awful. Much more entertaining than when it's merely mediocre like it's been the past few years.

This thread is proof of that. Many guffaws were had.

Try to even remotely replicate that performance and then get back at me. This is far from autopilot. Far from it.

Have not read all comments but I still plan on buying this game for WiiU. I played it briefly and it was fun. Sonic has not been in any kind of slump since Sonic 4... Sonic 4 Ep1, 2, Colors, Generations and Lost World have all been great.

They're highly addictive adrenaline rushes. The challenge of Unleashed makes me want to see another game with that entry barrier but generations grand level design.

autopilot infers a level of easiness or at least lack of input

anybody who has tried playing the unleashed style levels knows that is not the damn case, especially not for s-rank playthroughs like that video

Unleashed/Generations are definitely not autopilot games. Watch someone play it badly and you'll see that.

It takes hella reactions and memory to get through a level efficiently and in a way that's visually impressive. That is the 3D Sonic gameplay.

It's not necessarily my thing, being a fan more of the original games, but it's a hell of a lot more than holding up and pressing jump now and then. It can be quite fiendishly difficult.

Honestly will still get when it's 20 or under. I like 3D platformers a lot and they've all but gone. Also I've always liked the team of Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy since Sonic Adventure. So I'm glad to see them playable again.

I'm mean I just started playing Sonic Adventure HD last night ( 1.99 with PS Plus). And while I love the story scope it still plays horribly and I've fallen through the floor as well. Not saying Sonic Boom isn't worse but I can deal with a lot for some 3D adventure.

You'll probably enjoy the game because you have realistic expectations. The games are nowhere near masterpieces nor complete garbage. Bought both versions and enjoy playing them for what they are .

It's funny. Half the people I talk to about Boost Sonic will say it plays itself and it's autopilot, the other half will say it goes too fast and you can't see the obstacles and pits coming.

Since as I already said, I'm crap at Unleashed so I'd probably be leaning into the latter camp in that situation, but I think Generations gets the level design just right if you iron out those crappy 2D sections in Modern Sonic's stages which Sega keep putting in their games for whatever reason.

You probably have a lot of shitty friends. Kinda like Sonic. But instead of sucking, they don't know how to game.

3D Sonic is an exercise of memorization of the layout and a speedrunner game. You can play it slower, but your ranks will be lower too. And there are levels with a bit of exploration. There are branching paths. Everything is there. You're just not carefully exploring, like a game like Sonic Boom, because it's tedious.

Sonic "slow" gameplay works better on 2D plane. But the 3D ones aren't bad per se, you guys just suck on it and invent every type of excuses.

If I need to guess, half of the problems with development had to do with the fact CryEngine is in reality difficult to work with.
Yeah, I've heard that before.

Trying to design a CryEngine game for a platform like Wii U, though, surely must be a nightmare.

Driveclub and Unity is still going to make a profit also. It is sad but such is life.
Whoa now, DriveClub is a very well made, very polished game. While the game touted a lot of multiplayer features that were broken (which I agree is a big deal) the core game is very well made and technically solid. I thought it was an awesome single player racer. Again, that doesn't excuse the multiplayer stuff but it's not comparable to Unity or Sonic Boom at all.

It's been optimized so that it doesn't even need a pause?!
I think the GIF was just edited to get rid of all the pauses.
Yes, exactly that. It was edited down by Schnedwob on Something Awful. You still have to pause, but what it'd look like if you didn't have to pause is a marvel to behold.

long live the sonic cycle
No, the Sonic Cycle explicitly starts with "hopes are raised" and "fans begin to claim this as Sonic's triumphant return". Most people thought this looked like shit from the get-go. Doesn't count.
