Holy shit at that ending.
Toph vs Kuvira + Army is a go, and it's going to be amazing

My first time posting after an episode, so I'm not sure how much I have to spoiler tag lol
 
Looked pretty similar right? Like a combination of Mako and Wan.

Really good episode. Both A and B plots moved along well and had great character moments for each. Lots of great little situations and facial reactions. Varrick pulling out the Macguyver slayed me though. Him and Bolin make a really good combination on screen. I wish we could've seen this way more in the series because it makes Bolin look like a goofy but plucky hero and Varrick is the comic relief.
 
"I'm not going back to prison!" Ghazan lives on.

I guess with Mike and Brian's obsession with putting their characters in prison, they had to reiterate that line.

But yeah, I liked the episode. Varrick and Bolin were pretty dope, they have a pretty cool dynamic and I certainly enjoyed Korrasami. It was nice to see again, that Varrick is not all talk and Zhu Li, but actually a genius mind that have a number of qualities like fast talk and building weapons out of everything. Him being morally rotten and fairly egoist works wonderful with Bolins kind heart and childish glee that he often shares with Varrick.

But Kuvira. Oh, Kuvira. She really would be a good Dalek.

I think most anime fans know what fanservice mean. People often just reduce it on ecchi, but it actually means everything that panders to the fans. Like old characters who appear again or reference to things that came out of the fandom.
 
I wonder if Korrasami does happen, if they planned on it, or if they felt their fanbase would be angered if they didn't go through with it.

Just for me personally... I don't mind the idea, but I'd rather them stay friends. Just seems like it would too out of left field considering season 1 - 3 for Korrasami to now happen.

I know, I was just poking fun. But I really don't understand why people are calling Toph's presence in this show fanservice.

Best thing they can do is to leave it open. Just let them be close and say nothing further to their relationship and love life. Fans of Korrasami then can declare it kanon for themselves and those who aren't found of the idea can just declare them friends. Everybody wins, no creator gets hurt.

Well, I guess the though is that she is a favorite character of the old show, but yeah, I think this isn't fanservice anymore since she isn't a overlong cameo, but a part of the plot now.
 
Okay, did my re-watch. Some thoughts:

* I actually think this was the best episode this season so far. It had a good balance of action. The cut between various plot points was done right. I agree in the context of the overall season, it's kind of a "boring" episode in that, the plot still really isn't moving. This feels like a side step. BUT, as a stand alone episode, it was actually my favorite in terms of the characters and the actions.

* I liked that they tackled Korra avoiding Mako and Bolin head on. It felt a bit brushed off, her explanation. But I liked that they actually brought this back and did something with it. Instead of just making it a thing, and not doing anything with it.

* Varrick and Bolin together are awesome. Seriously, they have great chemistry. This season is also the best Bolin has been since Season 1. Really happy they are finally using him right.

* The whole "this is like old times, but I guess there will be an adjustment period" felt a little forced. The whole tension between the group actually felt kind of forced to me. Logically, it makes sense why there would be that tension. So it made sense. But just how it came out of no where, felt like it was just there to fit into the forced conclusion. I though the whole reunion aspect of the episode felt forced, and not really natural --- especially its conclusion. I also was kind of bummed that the reunion aspect wasn't as emotional. But I guess it shows that these characters have kind of grown apart. Even if the conclusion was that, they will always be friends, the distance between them kind of made their reunion more on the cold side.

* Wu felt a little bit grating in this episode. I liked him in the past, but he felt Bolin obnoxious in parts. Him hitting on Korra was just creeper status, and got old quick. But he did have some pretty funny moments.

* I'm glad that Korra isn't brooding, and they aren't dragging things out longer than it was. Although the transition felt kind of strange? She just spent years being broken. She comes back to fight Kuvira, gets rekt and embarrassed. She fails in front of the world stage. But in this episode she is all smiles, as if it didn't really phase her. Again, I'm actually glad they aren't dragging out her suffering, since the first 5 episodes were that. But kind of like how Season 2 had Korra change her personality with the flip of a switch, this felt kind of strange to me.

* Korrasami shit is ridiculous. The teasing is too much, and happens too often. I still don't think they will happen. And honestly, at this point I wouldn't really believe them getting together. Would feel strange. But their constant interactions is total shipper bait.

So yeah, this episode was flawed. No doubt. And I can understand people finding it "boring" in the larger context of the season (we are seriously running in place, with only 6 episodes left of the entire series, jesus). But as a stand alone episode, I found a lot of this episode to just be really enjoyable. It reminded me of the one off episode in Book 2 with Mako and Asami trying to get her companies property back. That was one of the better episodes, because it focused on a specific plot, and was fun. This episode felt like that, but did a really good job cutting between characters.

Sounds like a dont ask dont tell kind of stance to me. I think they're going to have to commit one way or another, purely because they'll show flash forwards at the end, they're going to have to wrap up the plot, and Korra's personal life is going to fall into that. I don't think they could get away with leaving it open, nor do I feel like they should.

Plus, as artistic creators, if that's the direction they feel their characters would naturally take, that's the direction they need to allow them to follow. As to whether or not the network would allow it (or even encourage it after their coming out special), that's yet to be seen.

Basically, please don't pussy out, Nick. One way or another.

If they're constantly interacting in a flirtatious manner, then why would it be forced/strange if they got together? Seems contradictory.

They will. If Nick did have a gay relationship of the main protagonist, they wouldn't commit to it head on. No way. Cartoon Network pushed back against Adventure Time over Princess Bubblegum and her relationship with Marceline. And Cartoon Network is a bit more edgy than Nick IMO.

It doesn't make sense. But these kid's networks just don't want to deal with the fall out of people getting angry. Also, while gay characters have been in cartoons before, it's very rare for a main protagonist to be one. I honestly don't see them getting Korra and Asami together -- period. But if they did end up going that route, it would certainly be an implied thing and not a full out thing.

People need to keep in mind that, they wrote Book 4 at the same time as Book 3. And that they were writing the show as if it was going to be on TV. They didn't know they would be pulled. So this idea that, Bryke have made changes, and are deciding to be bold because they aren't on TV anymore, really isn't true. Pretty sure Korra won't end up with anyone. Or if it's with anyone it will be Mako (although this episode with Mako bringing up the fact that they had tension in the past, kind of killed them becoming an item IMO).

Because they haven't been constantly interacting. Korra stole Asami's boyfriend from her. They went almost all of Book 2 not interacting. Then they went 3 years of only talking off and on. Asami has had showed more interest in Mako. In fact, prior to Mako and Asami splitting the second time, both wanted to date again. It was only when Korra forgot they broke up, that Asami got mad. But they both still wanted to be together. There has never been enough growth or moments to justify a romantic relationship with Asami and Korra. Maybe if they do flash forward as the end as an epilogue (which I agree is actually likely), but even in that case, I still don't see them going full out (see my post above).

Anyways, I just find it hard to believe that both of these characters were straight, and that both of these characters just end up being bi-sexual. It's possible. But call me crazy, it's kind of hard to believe that two people both realize they are bi-sexual, without even a proper relationship established. I'm not buying it.
 
Well Kuvira's supporters went all "hail Hydra" pretty fast didn't they. Pretty decent episode. What the hell is she going to do with all those damn vines?
 
I think Makorra is over tbh. When Mako brought up Korra and him having tension before...it kind of highlighted the fact that they aren't meant for each other on that level. At least, that was my take. The chemistry isn't really there either. There is no hint of romantic interests. And with 6 episodes left, not seeing it.

So I think Makorra bets are going to lose tbh. But there is still a flash forward epilogue to save you lmao

I think Korra ends up single at this point tbh (especially in the immediate plot, not counting an epilogue). Bolin + Opal will be the only major romance in this season. And Mako and Asami....maybe. But that also isn't having any moment. Personally I'm okay with this. This show has never done romance well. So let's keep it limited.
 
Man, if Korrasami becomes an actual thing, I'm gonna be the happiest guy in the world. Not like I'm praying that hard for some lezbo cartoon girls, but the egg on everybody's faces will fill my heart for days.

I don't think that this would be good. If they make Korrasami, parents and homophob fans will be on their roof and if the make Makorra I will be on their roof. (And probably others who don't think that this would work at all). Better do it like Nanoha.

Everything feels forced in spite of them making "sense" because these characters aren't very complementary of one another. Also, we have so much material with them being absolutely toxic and nonsensical toward one another, when they interact like actual people it doesn't feel harmonious.

also, the Mako-Korra-Asami friendship dynamic was always, always shit. The group just never gelled.

Yeah spot on. They are basically trying to do things with these relationships, that can't ever feel organic, because they never really had depth to these relationships, or spent enough time on them. They are also trying to cram it in, because they don't have any time left to do so.

Still, I did like the episode a lot. I was just pointing out how, the entire concept around the reunion was a bit awkward and strange.

EDIT: I also agree with you in terms of the lack of chemistry. It really never made sense either. These are a group of people that hurt each other, and yet they never reacted to it. It's too strange. It's why I kind of find Korra and Asami's "best friendship" to be kind of problematic. It felt out of the blue, and didn't really address the issues that should be there between them. It was kind of just brushed off, and then them both being forced together.

Bolin + Mako have good chemistry.
Bolin + Varrick have good chemistry.

Trying to think of other pairings that work (I mean in terms of screen dynamics). But i agree the Korra - Asami - Mako one is bad.

Yeah, Makorra would certainly feel forced at this point. They went 3 years without talking. They spent all of Book 3 kind of avoiding each other, and having awkward exchanges. Them reconciling, and falling back in love (with 6 episodes left), would be a massive stretch. Also with Mako acknowledging that they had tension and bad times prior, I'm not seeing it. Also, last time we see Mako interested in anyone, it was Asami. He wanted to get back with her. So it really would make no sense for him and Korra to get back together.

That's why I think, Korra being single is the only thing that really makes sense at this point.
