What is Valve working on these days?

I play either TF2, CS: GO or Dota 2 like five or six days a week, so I know that they still Make Games, but I'd kill for something new. Plus, the updates for each have been pretty skimpy this year. Particularly CS: GO, which I thought they'd really draw a lot of staff to since it's been such a runaway success but the updates feel as if there are three or four people working on the game.

So, they're working on something, it's just hard to see what that is. Porting everything to Source 2? Left 4 Dead 3? SteamOS? They've been worryingly quiet on the Steam Machines / Controller front.

Well we all know they are working on it. A common misconception is that Valve has never announced HL3 but in fact they have stated numerous times that they are in fact working on it.

Working on it is not the same as announcing it.

See Blizzard and Titan.

Id honestly prefer they made more games, and supported their current games less, I mean tf2 is fun yeah but I would have rather it stopped after mvm and half the hats, and maybe gotten something new by now.

Things seem like they quieted down on the Steam OS / Steambox front.

They giving up on all that?

And I assume the game dev part is making Dota skins, VR tests that will never see the light of day and stopping and starting various incarnations of Half Life 3.

Somehow making games, and continuing to improve games after they're released means Valve doesn't do games anymore.

Okay.

But seriously, we know that Left 4 Dead 3 is coming. Whatever the next Half-Life thing is, it's probably coming. They still continue to support Dota 2, Counter-Strike Global Offensive and Team Fortress 2 with updates, new content, new items, balance patches, etc.

From what I've been told: absolutely nothing.

And it will continue to be absolutely nothing until apparently Half Life 3 ships.

There's lots of hints floating around. The biggest appears to be Source 2 is on the near horizon. I'll also be shocked if L4D3 doesn't release next year. Lots of speculation that it'll be the flagship for the updated engine. It seems like their support for their active communities has shrunk for awhile now which usually indicates they're getting near the end of completing something.

And Steam Machines though I'm not sure how much overlap that would have with their development.

they released games in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 (if Alien Swarm counts), 2011, 2012, and 2013.

Isn't Source 2 already playable by the public? I read that it's being used by a beta client for Dota 2.

The alpha tools for custom games is source 2. Dota 2 will probably be the first Source 2 title once they finish porting it over.

That's true, but not everyone cares about Team Fortress, and even fewer I know care about DOTA. We're all just waiting for the one with the 3 at the end of its title.

Anything that takes minimal effort (i.e. not Half-Life 3) and prints money. So, mostly rehashed stuff and weak hardware.

I've no idea how the console version does but the PC version is consistently in the top 5 most played on PC and DOTA is like #1 on Steam ALWAYS.

These threads are always so bitter and full of people who know very little about Valve's PC exclusive content. Good times.

BTW, every one of Valve's games were designed to run on very low end hardware. They're very similar to Blizzard in that they rely on excellent art design over bleeding edge graphics tech.

Thing is an ark-full of people care about those titles. Valve bet on multiplayer games having staying power when it comes to long term enjoyment and cash flow, their bets paid off a thousand fold.

I know there's a lot of pessimism surrounding Valve in recent years, but I still believe HL3 is in-development, L4D3 too, although I care less about that.

What?

I heard all those millions of people playing Dota every day at the top of the steam charts say otherwise.

More people have played the Dota 'franchise" then the entire half life series.

Jesus Christ Valve threads on GAF have become obnoxious.

It seems that the current game industry has conditioned modern gamers to believe that if a company doesn't release a game every year or announce one they are literally doing nothing.

What a shame.

Talk about anecdotal evidences. 700-900K people play Dota at any given time and this figure doesn't include China/Korea where people use different clients to play the game.

I hate to use the vocal minority argument, but all the multiplayer games they published and co-developed have been well received by across the board. Its not like they release shitty games, make a ton of cash, and continue to make shitty games. The pessimism doesn't even revolve around them making new single players IPs, the pessimism is based around one title usually.

All of their other ventures besides game software are experimental side projects, nothing more, nothing less.

I just wish the people who felt like this would learn to type "I want HL3" instead of "They hardly work on games anymore".

Those two statements mean a whole world of different things. They have released games REGULARLY for years. If you are waiting on a specific sequel, it doesn't make all the other releases invalid or anything like that.

Didn't someone say L4D3 was a thing?

It definitely is a thing, and could likely be Valves first Source 2 engine game. The first real confirmation of this games existence was when somebody took a screenshot of a monitor at valve during a guided tour and it listed L4D3 as being tested for Source 2.

This was taken in 2013:
