Thank God a giant corporation loves me: Marvel Studios edition

I know I am going to come off as a huge fanboy but seriously, I freaking love Marvel Studios and most of their output. I love that they don't seem to be ashamed of the source material and that they frequently embrace the inherent campiness of comic books. I love that they seem to be the only ones keeping the 80s action movie style (humor, drama and action in equal measure) alive. I love that they are building a huge cinematic universe with multiple heroes and that they are expanding it with every movie. I love their excellent casting choices. And I really love that they are not afraid to throw their lesser known heroes into the ring.

I knew nothing about the Guardians of the Galaxy before entering the theater. I knew Rocket Raccoon from Marvel vs Capcom but I always thought that he was a Capcom character. Yes, really. I went to see the movie because it was a Marvel Studios production and I had faith that it would be something I would have fun watching. As soon as the title sequence started, with the music and all, I immediately thought "sold, this is going to be great". And it was! It so was. I now can't wait for Guardians of the Galaxy 2, I love Quill and Rocket and Drax and everybody. And there are so many movies still to come!

So, yeah. It's a great time for us comic book fans, let's enjoy it for as long as it lasts.

Prepare for some very negative responses, OP, but... I agree with you. The Marvel movies are some of the best fun I've had watching movies since I was a kid watching Indiana Jones.

Oh boy...

I like comics, love some of them, yet I think 9/10 Marvel movies have been average or below average. They're overrated as can be and get a bizarre amount of goodwill from critics (though the unfortunate omnipresence of the 'rotten rating' which favours safe and solid but not great movies is partly to blame) - some of the worst movies of the decade have come from Marvel (the Thor movies and Avengers) and every time people say "now THIS is a different kind of comic book movie" it never is, there are just more dumb one liners in it.

Having said that a few of them are actually pretty good and I'm looking forward to a few of the announced ones. "Could be worse" but I'd rather say thank god for the blockbuster directors with original ideas.

I appreciate Marvel for inspiring other studios to try world building with their franchises. It's a great time to be a sorta nerd.

And... we're off!

How on earth is Avengers one of the "worst movies of the decade"? I mean, ultimately, it's all opinion, but... how?

You certainly have to admire their dedicated to making consistently serviceable movies. Yes, that was a backhanded compliment.

They're fine. They've made some great comic book movies (GoTG, Winter Soldier, IM1, Avengers) and some atrocious ones (Incredible Hulk, Thor, Thor 2, IM2.)

The Cinematic Universe conceit is cool and it works for their films. Although I'm not into the homogenization. All their movies have the same feel to them.

To me, they have been hit or miss, but Iron Man is still a top 5 superhero movie, in my opinion.

Most of the rest of the movies, to me, feel like a Pixar movie, in that they are obviously well made, but feel so formulaic and obvious. GotG was pretty great, though, too.

I agree with you, most movie goers apparently agree with you judging by the box office and critical reception, and I'm sure that's a large segment of GAF that agrees with you.

Like, bowing to a corporate studio that has churned out similar movies over and over? Be a fan, I look forward to watching (some of) them. There is no doubt the catalog is filled with some serious mediocrity.

I like the universe aspect, but jesus. They made Thor(s), IM sequels and Captain America 1. Let's get it together.

i think their output has been good but i wouldnt say ive loved any of their movies. theyre dependable movie going fun, i suppose.

Guardians of the Galaxy was trash, though. like holy hell was it not for me. i legit yawned at several points and generally struggled to maintain interest in it. boring, unfunny characters and lame world.

The cinematic universe concept is a very cool idea because even if I dislike or am disinterested in half of Marvel's film output, I still want to see all of their films.

It was a smart idea on their part and they've made some goodies, but they've made just as many meh movies as well.

I guess I might call myself the movie equivalent of what a casual would be in video games, and I fucking love Marvel Studios movies. All of them.

Exactly how I feel. The Thor movies especially are horrible, but I'm not a massive comic fan so eh.
