Chrontendo Thread of playing The Good, The Bad, The Ugly of the Famicom/NES

These NES adventure games must have been huge in Japan. I've read the volumes of Oishinbo manga released in the US, and I cannot imagine interpreting that as a video game, without some kind of Cooking Mama component that is. The manga is basically the main character and his neglectful father competing for who knows more about Japanese delicacies. Its a good manga (I learned why there is no sashimi of fresh water fish), but must be a weird game.

Does anyone know if there is something like this done for the SNES?

Not yet but I can only assume Dr. S will start covering the SFC/SNES once it gets "released", he's currently at mid-1989 for the systems he's covering.

"Now, if you don't know what a biorhythm is, then, congratulations, you were probably not alive in the '70s."

Ha.

Ghost Lion & Faria are interesting looking games i'd never heard of before - both look a bit too tedious to play today though, Dr Sparkle plays these sort of games so we don't have to!

Yeah, Ghost Lion kinda sucks, I bought a copy (I have a much much higher tolerance for 8-bit RPG design than most people) but can't really get too far because the battle theme is absolutely grating.

So, uh. A new episode was released like 2 weeks ago apparently. Episode 46 which covers June-July 1989. I haven't been checking my Google Reader in a while so I didn't see it until now. So most of you probably know already, but here's a heads up anyway for those that might be interested and have missed it.

Here's some links:
Blog post
Archive.org page with the high quality 60FPS version.
Youtube version

Edit: Oh God damn it. I should read the thread before I guess. It did not show up as having new posts in my subscriber list so I just assumed! Sorry ignore this post. Also I haven't slept tonight so I'll blame that as well.

Well, thanks anyway for bumping the thread, because I really liked the episode I watched.

Will definitely watch the others.

Finally. The wait between episodes can be excruciating, but the end result is worth it. Seeing all the mediocre releases that have been forgotten about makes me appreciate the great games that have stood the test of time that much better.

Awesome! Been keeping a tab on the blog the last few days and of course the one day I don't it's uploaded. Well to be fair he hasn't made a proper blog post about it yet. And the 60fps version hasn't been uploaded on Archive.org yet, so I'll be waiting on that before watching.

What has been posted on the blog though is that apparently he fixed a Twitter account. Should probably be added to the OP.

@Chrontendo

Sorry for delay in updating the main post guys, rough Month, have added in the most recent Ep to the list and a link to the twitter account.

Didn't mind the most recent episode, I need to get around to checking out Blazing Lazers & Valis one of these days.

Looking forward to next episode, really keen to find out more on Mother on the Famicom as I've never played it but always been interested by it.

Holy shit, am I dreaming? Is this real? A new chrontendo will actually be released?! Finally!

And a "non-gaming series" is coming too? I wonder if it's music related.

Nice to see this coming back, I used to leave the YouTube playlist on sometimes while working something relaxing about the format.

I saw the video, I shed a tear, if there was an 8bit NES version of the Antonio Banderas GIF I would post it.

^_^

Now just to finish up my current rewatch of the series before the new one comes out :D

He's still about and active on Twitter @Chrontendo. Think the last Chrontendo update was the latest episode is being edited, the arcade roundup is taking a lot of time.

I'd imagine these episodes take an incredible amount of dedication, research, recording, editing, and just plain playing the videogames that it doesn't bother me that the episodes take a long time. I enjoy periodically going through the backlog while waiting for the new Chrontendo.

Really sucks if this show ended. One of the best podcast/video shows on the internet for sure.

Bah, I got all excited when I saw the thread bumped. :(

It hasn't ended. It's just that Dr. S probably doesn't have as much free time for it as he used to. Yes, it is sort of a shame that it takes so long between each episode. They used to come out more or less once a month after all, and now it's more like once or twice a year. But it's a lot of work making them. He started doing the show while unemployed but he has a job now and obviously that comes first.

Of course, I am just happy that the episodes that he already made exist. Really hope he gets around to continuing it soon though!

Awwwww fuck yeah. This shit right here is the best video game content on the internet.

I'm gonna run myself a bath, fill up on cocktails and scrub myself while learning about some famicom trash.

I am genuinely very excited.

I thought this stuff would be much bigger on gaf. Does anyone else find the interest and viewing figured really low for this?
I'd patreon the hell out of the esteemed dr if I had the chance and I'm a parsimonious fucker.

I guess it's just too niche. As good as I think it is, you really have to be invested in the NES to enjoy it I guess, and most people probably don't care much about NES games other than the greatest ones. I think most people who watch are probably NES collectors. It's pretty sad that this thread is two years old and still doesn't have 100 posts yet though.

I'm not huge into NES stuff either, but his mini-series on SMS and PCE are fucking ace. I mean, he runs through the entire SMS catalog and lets you know what's up with every single game released on the platform, and he doesn't just sample the games, but plays them thoroughly and givens such level-headed appraisals. Dr. Sparkle is a treasure. Going to get righteously baked and take in this new episode tonight.

Nah, genuine game history enthusiasts are a rare breed. Light nostalgic musings, along with rants about "bad" old video games, have broad appeal... but Chrontendo is a different beast entirely.

Oh my gaaaawd a new episode. I won't be able to take my pants off and grab the jurgens fast enough when I get home from work tonight. Can't wait, 89-92 are the more interesing years for me.

I am really surprised its not bigger too. The NES has so many amazing and quirky games, and Dr. Sparkle is doing such a great job. I agree the general interest for gaming history is surpisingly low though. Hopefully that changes when the medium and its audience matures even more.

Edit: But anyways, so glad this series have returned!

Yeah that's probably the case. Most people don't seem to care about where genres, ideas, and mechanics in games originated, and how the medium evolved. :(

I suppose your right, I just thought amongst the myriad niche audiences on gaf and the Body pillow brigade this show'd get a better showing.

That gameboy world thing you are putting out is also a phenomenal project, and much appreciated.

This thread reminded me to start watching this series as I've been really looking for meaty game history bits. Are there any comparable series out there that cover games/consoles of the past?
