Oh man, this game is making me realize how slow I've gotten at these types of games. Years of playing slower paced adventure games and all of my skills have eroded.

Wow, it took me like 2 weeks of constant playing to unlock all the Mii costumes. I just unlocked all the Mii costumes in about a day on the Wii U

Unlocks seem a bit fairer and easier this time around

I'm excited that I actually got my bundle on release day! But holy hell Best Buy gave zero fucks when they tossed the game in a bubble wrap bag and shipped it out. The box was in pretty bad shape, but whatever, I'm playing Smash and that's all I care about.

Some initial impressions:

- OMG the OST for this games is mind blowing. I've already spent at least an hour or two just fine tuning "my music" frequency for every level. I would hope this game gets a ton of nods for any GOTY music discussion.

- The combat hit a sweet spot for my own taste. It's a lot faster and more fluid than brawl but more controlled than melee ever was for me.

- I've always played Smash as a party game. It wasn't until recently that I started to watch competitive Smash. Watching some of the high level players stream Smash 4, I can say for myself it's a much better viewing experience than Melee is. A lot of it is because I don't know much about the Melee meta game, though.

- Online is running better than I could have hoped for. I haven't even felt compelled to plug in the usb ethernet adapter I picked up yet because the wireless has been perfectly acceptable. There was one game that was pretty choppy but it's clear it was because one of the other players was on a bad connection. That was the exception.

- The graphics are absolutely gorgeous. I have to remind myself that this is running on hardware that for a long time people believed was a pretty lateral movement over from a PS3 or 360. Whatever the Wii U is running on paper, in practice we are seeing something sitting nicely between "last" and "current" gen.

It is rare a game lives up to the hype. This is one of those games for me. Can't wait to get some friends over.

uhhhhhhhhh so tell me I aint the only dude getting straight bopped by level 9 cpus around here

My post from last night:

Is it just me, or is level 9 AI actually pretty damn hard? I haven't played Smash more than a handful of times since being obsessed with Melee back in early high school (~6-7 years ago). I was decent back then, but I'm getting my ass kicked now. It's like they're letting the AI read your inputs and respond in kind. Their reaction times and ability to judge your trajectory is insane.

Seriously, they always juggle me because they lock onto my character like a goddamn homing missile, but they air dodge everything I throw at them.

I think I might try to get better with Robin. Her (cause girl Robin is sick) setups are basic yet so nice.

I still like Rosalina, but getting good with her might be too high of a goal for me so far. I can def get wins with both though.

For the life of me, I cannot kill even the most basic C. Falcon or Ness.

I'm starting to think Ness is OP because I'm so salty.

Nope it's like around 13 GB (I don't know the exact amount off the top of my head).

I bet no Wii U game every goes past 25 GB. There's very little need to as even on the PS3 there were less than 10 games that were dual-layered. Also dual-layered discs create read problems for some units.

Finally it prevents people who don't have hard drives from downloading the game. I feel the 25 GB we get to use on Wii U was very deliberate.

I wonder if any game will beat Lego City with its 20 GB download.

Xenoblade X may. Especially if they include the Japanese track as well.

Surprising with the shit ton of music and content. Brawl was on a dual-layered disc.

I agree now. Their reaction time and judgement is impeccable.

Today was rather interesting for me. After picking up Smash U from Best Buy in the Woodlands (& got my coin), I was told the Adapter was sold out. They put one on hold at another Best Buy, but some asshole swiped that Adapter before I arrived. I was then told by a GameStop employee that Fry's might have some, so I journeyed over there & checked various GameStops, Targets, & Best Buys along the way. None had it, & Fry's only had ones that were put on hold since this morning. In desperation, I looked through GameStop's site & found one in stock (& promptly put it on hold). Unfortunately, said GameStop was located in the far-off town of Liberty. After driving 50 minutes to get there, I finally got the Adapter (& filled up gas afterwards). I did all this on an empty stomach that almost made me pass out along the way, & the fact that my home is near Cypress. I spent 6 hours on the road (left at 9am) just to get Smash U & the Adapter.

Fortunately, the hell I endured was worth it. The game is fun, the Adapter works like a dream, & I got food the second I returned.

This game is way too generous with items and trophies. Already have like 60 custom moves and over 250 trophies in only 15 hours.

Not that I'm complaining of course.

Sorry for this possible stupid question, but does playing 8-player Smash count towards the Smash matches required to unlock characters?

So am I imagining things or do amiibos seem to get better when you use the same character as them. Cause I was initially just using sonic against my samus amiibo but then switched to samus and it seemed like it got dramatically better with only a few level bumps. Like as if it started playing more to samus's strengths.

Yes

OKAY I need some advice.

My Smash Wii U game has been acting up. The opening intro movie stutters sometimes, and whenever I launch the game it says 'Preparing...' first, which never happened before. This started when I moved the game from my USB hard drive to the system memory. However when it was on my hard drive I noticed there was like a stutter during gameplay, just for a split second, the action skipped.

It's not game-breaking and it's usually fine during normal gameplay, but is anyone else having this issue?
Actually, I've experienced this too. Stutters between the title menu and pressing start. Plus, I've had it a couple of times in single player matches. However, I'm running it on disc, so now I'm interested in what causes this.

I'm able to replicate a stutter in Pyroshere everytime. Just before these spiked orange creatures drop from the sky the game will stutter. It only happens with those creatures from what I've seen. This is the only stuttering I've experienced with the game.

For those that want to try this for themselves go into training mode and wait for those creatures to drop. If they don't drop just press 'reset' from the training menu until they drop.

Just curious has anyone tested if the game loads fast on the Wii U internal storage as oppose to the external HDD. Just curious though the game loads pretty fast in on a HDD anyways

^On that note, I think I ran into a bug yesterday. The controls literally stopped working save for like the B button and the shoulder triggers on my gamecube controller. None of my other controllers worked either. I had to restart my Wii U.

Are you certain it's not just what normally happens as it levels up though? I leveled up a Peach Amiibo almost exclusively using Peach last night, but it seems to me that it somewhat reasonably matches the normal increasing CPU level progression, with added Cruel Smash style powerups becoming noticeable in the final 10-20 levels.

As a total amateur with about 2 hours under my belt, my thoughts on the characters I've played so far:

Link - seems to be just as good as I remember him, but he's a bit slower. Tried to switch to toon link, but his dash lunge is just way too short.

Villager - surprisingly tough. Lots of ways to get back to the stage. But that whole four-move thing to cut down a tree is almost worthless. Is there a strategy there I'm missing?

Zero suit samus - she's pretty, she's fast, she's tough... but I'd never use her. I hate when B-down doesn't go straight down, and instead goes toward an angle.

Who is everyone else playing as?

I know Link isn't considered a top-tier char; but he's just what I gravitate toward cause Zelda games are my favorite Nintendo titles. Meh, I'll never be that great so I may as well have fun.
For Villager, you can use the falling tree as an edge guard against players coming back onto the platform from below.
For Zero Suit, Down-B has two outcomes: Pressing it once and letting it hit an opponent sends them straight down. Pressing it once, then presseing it again will make her kick diagonally and cause them to fly at an angle.

dumb question, am I able to use customized control layouts in normal smash mode? Works in classic, but normal (with friends) smash doesn't let me select my name and I HATEEEE the default controls

Smash anyone?

You can use your customized button lay out anywhere. Click the names under your... name?

Orange-spiked guys are Zeros for future reference. They're larval Ki-Hunters.
