so what is everyones log look like since you got the game? i saw that i was 41 hours total but at least 10 hours was left on when i had to go in for work but unlocked the 10 hour challenge though lol. so about 30 hours or so of actual playtime.

Any tips on how to beat the Kirby's Crazy Appetite event? The one where you have to heal yourself in the Great Cave Offensive. This seems impossible, I've only gotten to about 45%. There is far too little food, a huge area to traverse, and Dedede's slapping gordos everywhere.

I got to about 30% and ran out of time...

Absorb DeDeDe. Your heals are multiplied when using DeDeDe's inhale.

This is how I've always felt. Melee did it right, it didn't have any straight rips from other games (except where it was necessary like the classic 64 stages, but that's something else entirely obviously). They did remixes for every stage in the game, two songs per stage and the quality of each track was amazing. I don't recall a single track in Melee that I didn't like and I could always choose my favorite one by holding one of the shoulder buttons when a match starts.

I don't know why they feel it's a good idea to bloat the game with music ripped directly from other games. It doesn't... make the soundtrack that much more amazing. I'd prefer a focused and well rounded set of remixed music like how Melee had it than 300+ songs where the majority are game rips. It's a bad trend for Smash IMO. :/
I don't mind the game rips at all, assuming the original game had great music. Something like Xenoblade music? It's already fine.

The only thing that bothers me is the really terrible remixes that make it into final release. I don't know if there are many in this game, but I remember some of the Brawl songs being pretty bad versions of songs. But it really doesn't matter, since they give you great control over it.

Though I loved Melee's approach too. I dunno, I think at the end of the day I like the idea of having a massive music collection and tweaking frequencies. Reason being, I rarely notice the music mid match (though after years of playing, of course that music sticks with me and releases nostalgia triggers any time I hear it elsewhere.)

I've been playing not only my own game, but my brother's copy on his Wii U as well, so it's hard to tell my exact smash 4 playtime, but I suspect around 30 hours.

I spent the last 2 weeks trying to 100% the 3DS smash, so i'm a bit burnt out already! I've probably clocked in over 100 hours of smash in november alone.

Oh ok, I got that with the Ness trick (set opponent's health to 999, grab, tap A until you get a 123+combo)

Absorb DeDeDe. Your heals are multiplied when using DeDeDe's inhale.

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA crazy.

So overall, are y'all pleased with the game? Is it living up to expectations? Not a Smash fan but I know how hyped you guys were so I'm curious.

With most of the things, yes.

Though I have to say I'm completely disappointed with the stage creator. Seriously, the core idea of drawing the stages is fantastic, and it had so much potential, but because of some dumb decisions ended up being completely subpar.

The "quality over quantity" adage has never been more applicable than it is now. Some of the new remixes are fantastic, but Jesus fucking Christ, stop remixing the same songs over and over again. Whether it be 1-1, Mute City, DK Island Swing, Green Greens, or the Zelda Overworld Theme, I've had enough. Sakurai's treatment of the Kirby series is really bizarre, and I wish more people would question it. He likes to pretend that the series ended after Kirby Super Star, which is reflected by the seemingly endless amount of Green Greens and Butter Building remixes. There's also the fact that there is ZERO Epic Yarn representation, despise the fact that it's the most well received Kirby game in the franchise, and the only songs from Return to Dream Land are MIDI rips. I think Sakurai needs to take a well deserved vacation and let somebody else direct the next installment.

Well my point is, I'm going to grieve less over old songs not being imported than new songs that never even got made. Hearing that Wario didn't get any new arrangement is severely disappointing since there are many tunes from both Wario series that would have worked well. I'm just saying if the choice came to new songs vs old songs I'd pick new songs every time.

What I find even more annoying though is how there's now two remixes of songs because they're reusing music from Brawl. Or hell, even more than two remixes for a single song like Area 6. WHY are there so many versions of that song? Star Fox has other music, you know! >_<

I don't think the approach is the problem. I like having song rips, because, honestly, Nintendo games have a lot of amazing songs. My problem is with the selection. The selection in this game seems soooo weird, like many remixes of the same song, some games with no music at all (Metroid Prime 3 for example), and such.

I don't mind having rips, if they can at least can give some variety to the soundtrack. DKCTF has amazing songs, but they use only 2 tracks and one is ANOTHER jungle hijinks remix.

I've "mained" Link since the N64 days but I'm thinking about switching over to Toon Link. Toon Link feels like he plays more like his N64 counterpart than normal Link does. Plus, I swear to god Link's hit detection is weird. I've had multiple instances were the tip of Link's sword clearly hits someone but a hit doesn't register.

The "quantity over quality " well sums up this smash.

the problem isn't so much that there are too many area 6 songs as it is that area 6 v.2 exists

just

why

why was that necessary

why did that need to come back

Melee had far less stages to make music for as well, so they could put more effort into each song.

They also knew it only had 1-2 songs per stage, so they packed sometimes 3-4 songs into a single long medley and this made the music vibrant and amazing. With Brawl/Smash 4 they know they can either remix all the songs they want or include them either way, so I think they don't really try and truly make a great medley.

Stuff like Peach's Castle absolutely breathtaking blend of 1-1 and 1-2 is probably never going to happen again. Stuff like the percussion and bass of 1-2 continuing on while 1-1 plays to this day still impresses me as good music. Fourside includes Fourside's theme mixed with the 8 melodies and touches of the atmospheric weird sci-fi ambient sounds of Earthbound. Onett loops with the enemy encounter jingle. Stuff like that just isn't present anymore. The medley's in Brawl and 4 are mostly just regular songs shoved together with no transition or blend at all (Paper Mario Medley for example).

Honestly the only Smash 4 song that really invokes the feeling of a Melee remix is the Balloon Fight medley. The way it teases Balloon Trip through various jingles and tunes that aren't often remixed is expertly done. It always teases the Balloon Fight theme we all know, but never actually uses it, and I love it.

Dude can pick whatever Kirby songs he likes. I have to agree about DK music, though.

Is ZSS like really good now? I've been playing Smash with my friends since the 64 days and we've never really been into it from a competitive aspect (i.e. no items FD only and all that), more just for fun, but we played some this weekend and I was positively wrecking them with ZSS. My brother mains Shiek and my friend Fox and I've never really been able to keep up with them as a faster character until now. Diggin' it.

I think my main issue is they choose like 3-5 remixes for the same song but no Rhythm Heaven music, one Paper Mario song, and other things that really irks me.
There was 2 Wonderful 101 songs in the game and only 1 Paper Mario song.
The music selection is really off.
That being said ... Mario Fortress, DK Vocal Mix, and Route 10 was awesome.

Yeah, ZSS is really strong in the new games. Keep it up! Sheik is really good too, so I wouldn't blame your wins purely on your character. ;)

Yeah, this makes a lot of sense. I thought the same thing about TF. Where's Busted Bayou?

I'm fine with rips from games, especially since Nintendo is killing it with soundtracks lately. For example, I don't think any of the Kid Icarus Uprising remixes top the originals. Destroyed Skyworld is nice, but the instrumentation is really bad. KI:U already had top notch music.

But if you're gonna take rips, get a variety. If you already have 8 DK Island Swing remixes, maybe pick some rips that aren't DK Island Swing. There is a lot of redundancy on the OST.

I think Fire Emblem made out pretty good. The new remixes were good, all of the good brawl remixes returned, and the rips were all great choices.

In terms of remixes, it's a lot like Brawl: There's a handful of remixes I really, really love, and then a bunch that are weak.

PS: Is the Melee Fountain of Dreams track not in this? If not, that's a tragedy. That song IS smash bros to me.

Rhythm Heaven hype going from a rumoured fighter all the down to just some trophies and a Smash Run enemy is rather sad to hear.

Playing this game with a cube or pro controller is pure bliss

Hey guys, how is the guide for the game?

I've had a lot of downtime in the office and would prefer something offline to read. Helpful? Not helpful?

Thanks :)

How many of you guys are playing with the gamepad? I thought I wouldnt like it but its pretty damn good after I switched grab and block.

The gamecube bundle was all out >_>

After playing Smash for Wii U, I almost feel like the 3DS version was unnecessary. Handheld hardware just intrinsically seems poorly matched for this type of game...

I sort of wish the Smash for 3DS was limited to 2 players. That way we may still also have Ice Climbers and the camera wouldn't need to zoom out quite as often to accommodate the action. Plus, there'd be less to sync up online which would possibly help out the experience. Althouhg you could stick to 1 v 1 for multiplayer, the single player modes all have 4 characters duking it out which is a bit difficult to deal with on such a tiny screen.

Indeed, playing the Wii U version on the big screen sort of makes the 3DS version comparatively annoying to play for long periods of time. Even on the XL, things are just too small. It's amazing what they were able to achieve on the 3DS, but it feels like a bit of a square peg in a round hole.

There are also 2 Air Ride songs (ripped), Squeak Squad, O2, and a new Amazing Mirror remix. So there's a healthy amount of more recent Kirby music, even music from games Sakurai never influenced.

Air Ride was directed by Sakurai, Kirby 64 was made while Sakurai was still at HAL, and Sakurai served on the advisory board during Amazing Mirror's development. All things considered, that's not very impressive.

Canvas Curse - Nothing
Squeak Squad - One remix in Brawl
Super Star Ultra - Nothing
Epic Yarn - Nothing
Kirby's Return to Dream Land - Two audio rips
Kirby Mass Attack - Nothing
Kirby: Triple Deluxe - One audio rip

This should have been in the game but it's not. Cue another rant.

Yeah I didn't notice that a friend had messaged me until the next day. They should fix that and allow you to play CPU's/Amiibos in a friend room until someone joins.
I don't like that they'll allow us to put in a CPU and choose a stage but we can't start the match. Really silly

I know complaining is your favorite pastime, but at least aim it at the people actually responsible.

Sakurai said:
We've asked our group of arrangement supervisors to listen to an elite selection of Nintendo music and asked them to arrange several of their favorite songs...which means there will be quite a number of songs.

That statement was from Brawl, but I doubt the process has changed. The musicians decided what they wanted to remix, it's not like Sakurai had a list of 5 songs and said "do these or else."

So to summarize:

"I dont like how Sakurai treats the Kirby franchise in Smash games and thus would like to see a new person in charge of the next Smash game"

wow

I think it's naive to believe that Sakurai doesn't have the final say. I also don't think it's a coincidence that the only new Kirby remixes are derived from games he was personally involved with. Sakurai is a talented game designer, but I feel like the franchise is beginning to stagnate.

I don't like how Sakurai treats 90% of Nintendo's franchises minus maybe Mario and Pokémon. I'm not insulting him or downplaying his ability to direct a great game, but I think it might be time for some fresh blood. Stop the presses!

For once i'd just like to hear what you actually like about smash bros. Every time i tune in to this thread and see your posts, it's only complaining about 'lack of this' or 'lack of that' or 'why did sakurai make these choices, I don't agree with them.'

What do you enjoy about smash, and is that enjoyment greater than or less than your disappointment?

Anyone know how to turn off the live global smash power ranking that shows up in anything that tracks gsp?

Also I'm so glad W101 music got in, I still really want a stage though

Hey guys! I have been smashing non-stop so I have had no time to come here and talk a little bit x).

Yesterday we had our first 4vs4 tournament and holy shit is it SO MUCH FUN! Our team when up against people who are top players in both singles and doubles in our area (They had the guy won the singles tournament and the runner ups in doubles), and the chaos and chemistry between you and your team is vital. The way you have to play between large stages and small stages is completely different.

We played two out of three, 7 minutes with 2 stocks, no banned stages, friendly fire on.

First battle was in skyworld. Red team spawned in the left, Blue in the right. Marth and Pacman made most damage while Link and Dedede finished the opponent in our team. Choices of where to be, when to run away, checking on your teammates to see they are out of danger and knowing when your teammate is going to go for the kill for you to get out of the way or throw the victim into hitting range its all really exciting, and the constant communication (mostly yelling and swearing), tense atmosphere and seen how little by little your opponents and teammates fall... its all so fun. We ended up losing, but it was so damn close. We also played in Temple, who had the same experience. And Big Battlefield, who allowed for even more shenanigans since space is reduced and hits hit harder. All in all provided great variety and more clever thinking.

If I don't see 4vs4 as an option in big tournaments I'll be desperately disappointing, they are also incredibly fun and in my opinion will make for greater strategies and more characters to shine.
