RIP Fountain of Dreams music. :(

I killed a Jigglypuff's final stock with a Lucina shield breaker yesterday for the instant top-of-screen kill. That was my high point besides this story: After the frustrating early attempts, I finally found someone in For Glory that seemed to have practically lag-free matches. I played with a GameCube controller and my monitor on "Standard" instead of "Gaming" mode though I still don't know if that's placebo.

We played for 3 hours straight.

I was doing an experiment starting with Mario and going through the roster in order. Most people would quit after a few matches, or stay with someone annoying like Toon Link using arrow spam. This person actually stayed. After I went through 12 or so fighters, we both ended up with Link, the first mirror match of the night. I wasn't sure if this was coincidence or if they had actually noticed what I was doing. Next match, Zelda. Every match after that was a mirror match in order (aside from one test match where I figured out how to ACTUALLY use Villager's Up+B, due to killing myself not holding B in before). I don't think we ever picked the same costume on any fighter. We would start almost every match by taunting a couple of times, then fighting.

We had Dark Samus vs. Light Samus on the omega Luigi's Mansion roof with Tetris music playing. It was dramatic. We both simultaneously killed ourselves with fast down+B's off the stage because we were presumably noobs to some fighter (I think Sheik or ZSS).

I sucked with some fighters, and overall they were several kills ahead of me, but I would still win some. We seemed very evenly matched occasionally, like ROB vs. ROB going to within 5 seconds of sudden death (we never got to sudden death at all) with 100+ percent on both of us. I believe there was at least one other match like that with very high percentage on the last stock.

Even odder, they apparently had everyone I did past Link, but we were both missing Duck Hunt. I don't know if they had Game & Watch, the other fighter I didn't have. Of course after playing all those matches I did two versus matches offline and got the remaining fighters.

After 3 hours of playing, we finished Sonic vs. Sonic, and they disconnected. I finally figured out that Nintendo lets you see people you have played with now, so I added them. Even if they don't add me back, it was a fun night and a small boost to faith in humanity. And, apparently it's possible to play with very little lag for me after all, so that's encouraging.

My Smash + adapter copy on Amazon.fr switched from "pre-order" to "not yet shipped".
Oh god, hopefully that means dispatched tomorrow so I can get it day -2 :)

What would have made too much sense:

When you play classic mode and you encounter a team battle, give me the option to scan in my amiibo as my teammate (if you don't have one, you can still select one of the characters you've already beaten).

That would get me to buy one instantly.

Honestly, I really doubt a new director would seriously change the way certain series are represented...I think we'd still have underrepresented series, probably just different ones.

I still find it funny it took three games for Onett to... you know, have Onett as a song. Mother as a series always seems to make out like a bandit with music. No rips at all and yet Mother has some of the most remixes of any series, especially a series with only one/two reps and one/two stages per game.

Maybe the third time will be the charm for Delfino actually getting a Sunshine remix. I'm pretty sure that stage will be around forever, it's one of Brawl's best. So maybe next time...

It's especially weird since Sakurai like, is always biased towards Kirby and Kid Icarus one would assume. You would think Fountain of Dreams would be one of the most loved songs of all time in Smash.

Mother has like...6 songs off the get go, I think? Crazy stuff.

If I don't see 4vs4 as an option in big tournaments I'll be desperately disappointing, they are also incredibly fun and in my opinion will make for greater strategies and more characters to shine.

What's going to make 4v4 hard at tournaments is getting 8 players together and those 8 players are going to be holding up the other events at a tournament. I guarantee you that 4v4 will only happen at Smash 4 only events, which means we wouldn't likely see them at big nationals where there's likely to be more than one game -- unless the TOs do some really good planning such that 4v4 wouldn't slow down the other events going on.

3v3 might be more viable though.

I think it's obvious Sakurai loves the Mother Series...you know, since he included it in the first place, when I doubt anyone else would've. Honestly I think he likes F-Zero as well. But I guess he realizes they don't really stand out to most people so doesn't really seem to put as much effort into representing them as his biggest franchises...

Honestly, it's really just a Stage that they lack, though. I think the music selection for both of them is pretty good, even if F-Zero is mostly rips (but they're good as is really), but they both have an Assist Trophy, and a decent amount of Trophies. If you ported Magicant and Mute City to Wii U, I think their representation would be perfect. Well, Lucas too, but it doesn't bother me too much he got cut.

Of course, Onett is the GOAT so I'm happy. Wish he brought back Big Blue over Port Town, though.

That statement was from Brawl, but I doubt the process has changed. The musicians decided what they wanted to remix, it's not like Sakurai had a list of 5 songs and said "do these or else."

That's a terrible way to make soundtrack decisions, and it's why the Metroid and F-Zero selections have been particularly terrible since Brawl, especially compared to another ignored series, Earthbound (since the former series aren't as popular in Japan, while Mother is still a relative hit). (edit: the only Metroid arrangements in Brawl were done by the series composers, Kenji Yamamoto and Minako Hamano, their only contributions to Brawl, FYI)

Melee's soundtrack was great because it was three guys doing the whole thing, and they had to pay equal attention to each stage. Even with more stages and series to focus on, having a set of composers/arrangers who are required to create music for each stage makes a huge difference in the final presentation.

By having the same three guys do the whole soundtrack, you also end up with a consistent whole, where the various series' music can sound like one game, unlike the mash-up that was Brawl. That's also why we won't see another Smashing Live concert, since the compositions are all so disparate in style.

Half of those are new remixes as well (and very high quality ones!).

Humoresque of a Little Dog is a glaring omission, especially since it makes way more sense on Onett than it ever did on NPC. But other than that, the Mother music is great.

Mushroomy Kingdom got absolutely gutted. I think only one song from that stage returned and it had a ton of remixes of somewhat off beat music (Mario Land, Gritzy Desert)

For once i'd just like to hear what you actually like about smash bros. Every time i tune in to this thread and see your posts, it's only complaining about 'lack of this' or 'lack of that' or 'why did sakurai make these choices, I don't agree with them.'

What do you enjoy about smash, and is that enjoyment greater than or less than your disappointment?

I complain because I care. Maybe I care too much. Maybe that's my problem. But I've spent the past 20 years playing Nintendo games borderline obsessively and it upsets me when things don't go the way I think they should. I guess I can understand how irritating it must be to have to listen to somebody complain non-stop, but why else should I post? Would anybody care if I praised the game? Does anybody care if Super Smash Bros. for Wii U has Gonzo The Great's approval? Probably not. As long as they don't start insulting Sakurai on a personal level, I don't see why people should stay silent regarding arguably the biggest franchise in the history of gaming. If we don't complain, then nothing will change. Like BGBW mentioned earlier, maybe the soundtrack would have been better if we spent more time focusing on that than Ridley and Geno.

Ah, I see what you mean and I have to agree. In the Tournament I attended 4vs4 was the last event. All other tournaments where made between 2pm and 8pm, and at about 7pm they announced it and opened registrations and by 8pm, when all the other tournaments ended, the 4vs4 started. So the solution might be to make it at the start of the event or at the very end, yeah.

Don't spoil what they are but...does it have even more Mother songs that I haven't unlocked yet?

I agree with every word you said, and it's the reason why I believe that Melee still has the best soundtrack in the series.

No more Easton Kingdom, and yet they brought back the 1-1 remix from Mushroomy Kingdom instead? How can anybody be okay with that? If you're going to recycle songs from Brawl, at least include the good ones.

At least they brought back Stickerbrush Symphony and Tetris Type A! Two of the best in the game, I think.

Those two were also done by Michiko Naruke and Yoko Shimomura, who incidentally both did the Spirit Tracks and Magicant songs! Which is why I believe the two of them should be in charge of SSB5.

Um, why doesn't Duck Hunt have a taunt of him laughing at you like on the NES game, with the 8bit "laugh"? There's only one taunt of him laughing and it's completely different. HUGE missed opportunity :(

This is the other huge taunt miss in the game besides Sonic missing his best one from Brawl.

I guess i'm just more happy about what I do get than what I don't get because I know it's impossible to please everyone. There are things that seem like obvious inclusions to us, but maybe their omission is a bit more complicated than we know. Maybe some of the stuff we wanted was prototyped but removed for whatever reason. Sakurai nearly killed himself making this game and i'm just really grateful we get it at all. It's my favorite smash bros ever. I love the way it handles and I love the character roster.

There will *ALWAYS* be things left out simply because it's impossible to please everyone and there's not enough time in the world to add everything.

Get some Western artists in there. Hire Shinesparkers to do soundtracks for the Metroid stages.

It's also criminal we didn't get any new Prime representation in the stages - one from each game along the lines of Phendrana Drifts, Sanctuary Fortress (with Quadraxis as a possible boss) and Skytown, Elysia would all make great places to fight. Skytown could probably share assets with Kid Icarus stages.

Nintendo itself has a huge issue with re-using classic music too much (see World 1-1 and Jungle Hijinx in every Mario and Donkey Kong game ever), so I can see why that's ingrained in Sakurai haha.

I sort of agree Melee had a nicer focus, soundtrack wise, but there are quite a few stinkers for me. I for one really dislike all the Mario remixes in that, bar Dr. Mario. But I do agree I think going back to two-songs per stage, like the 3DS Version did *but all new songs and not repeats* would be stellar for Smash 5, especially if every series gets at least two stages, that's a good four for each.

I just don't really agree with the "replace Sakurai!" being the magical cure-all for every ailment of Smash like I see it nowadays. I'll call it right now, if we get a new director for Smash 5, people will be thrilled at first, but I imagine they'll get a ton of hate as soon as the game hits and people will want Sakurai back.

I've always felt that, ultimately, there are as many good and great songs in Brawl and Smash 4 as there are in Melee. The only problem with the former two is that they have a lot of redundant and weak songs as well, while Melee's soundtrack is more "consistent" all around.

So, here's a thought experiment...

From the soundtrack, cut down each Stage to having only two of its songs, the ones you consider the most necessary and representative.

I'll have to think this over first...for Duck Hunt I know I'd go with the Duck Hunt Medley, and Swan Lesson. Fucking love that song.

Soo uhmmm any youtube channel with all the music yet?
This game is insane to much stuff to unlock, especially those rewards on hard in events are sometimes frustrating.
Also the first 2 rows in the Challenges, WTH

So I went to the onlne option yesterday and got my Global Smash Power ranking. Quick question though, going purely by Global Smash Power I can see roughly only 80,000 people have signed in online at least once and I don't think that can be right... When do the GSP 'leaderboards' update? Does it only update each time I enter the online menu?

I think one problem overall is the porting of content instead of the creation of new content, which lends itself to the idea of throwing in as much content as possible.

As others have said. This game definitely suffers from quantity over quality, and aside from the characters and fighting engine, everything else feels half baked or misdirected.

Shocked at how many remixes of the dkc1 main theme there are, but no aquatic ambience? Shame that we get jazz, tribal, original, vocal, etc... Renditions of the same song, and yet some of the best dkc music isn't represented.

Skytown deserves its own assets.

Where do I see these leaderboards?

Are there any Shop exclusive Trophies? Like the Alt. ones?

Seem this Shop is pointless otherwise as it's way better to get Trophies via Trophy Rusk and Classic, plus you wanna save dough for Crazy Orders.

just like

aim for at least two songs that haven't been arranged before in smash bros per franchise. i think that's a pretty reasonable goal

I don't think the quantity has to take a hit while improving the quality of the selection. They can port every song over from previous Smash games, just... give us something interesting and new for every franchise.

How is the Hori Battlepad for Wii U? I'm thinking of picking one up since I messed up and didn't preorder an adapter.

I'd like to go ahead and buy it if the quality is good and it's similar enough to a GC controller.

I like how Donkey Kong has the Arcade, Country, and Returns represented...no EAD now with Rumble Falls gone, but eh.

Every series should strive for that "equality", imo.
