Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin announced for PS4/XBO/PC - April 2015

Honestly that's unbelievable!

How can anybody be excited for this blatant fucking ripoff?

Maybe being a fighting game player for so long made me used to this kind of stuff, but I really don't have an issue, as long as the price isn't too high.

I'm ok with paying for this, even though I'm not the biggest fan of Dark Souls II, I'm still willing to pay for it.

It's a good game...

I'll wait until I have a new card before I play it, though. If the improvements are demanding, I'll have to let go of 3200x1800, and I don't want to >_>

Please don't take too long with those new cards, Nvidia.

My only problem (PC) is splitting the player base. We all knew the massive downgrade the game got before we bought the PC version (well if you were on GAF you would've) so there no room to complain there, but I expect multiplayer to be dead on the new game and that's a real shame. I'll double dip if the graphics get back to what it was pre-downgrade though, but the trailer seems to show the same geometry as already exists so I'll be waiting to see how it turns out.

Yes! I quit playing DS2 after getting my platinum just in case this would happen. I really wanted a DS1&2 pack but I'll take what I can get.

You are going to have to justify this.

If you own the game already, you get to see the content.

If you want to play the game on XBO/PS4, then From deserves to be compensated for porting the game and various improvements.

Justify what?

That I think it's ridiculous that I would have to buy the entire game again in order to play in Dx11?

They could have just made this an upgrade/DLC for those who already own the game, why must we re-buy the whole thing again for full price?

How the fuck are people defending this garbage is beyond me.

Edit: I'm talking about the PC version, just in case some are confused.

Durante, you speak my language. Can I get an amen?

Huntsman's Copse is really cool, Norman's Wharf as well, don't get this "everything is so dull" sentiment. Only place I didn't really enjoy was N64 Woods.

I barely get where the idea that the game literally throws enemies at you comes from. There is that one room in Brightstone with the spider dudes, but that's a trap. You can lure them out one by one.
Exactly. And of course, Shrine of Amana is a fantastic area as well. And so is the whole Dragon Aerie/Shrine passage.

And that's before going into the DLC.

"Dull"? I'm sorry I just don't get it.

I have DS2 on PC, and I think I'll skip this new version and just try to grab the DLC for cheap at some point.

Should have gone with timed exclusivity for Xbox because with Bloodborne coming weeks earlier and how deep the experience of such a game will be, it will definitely hurt sales for the PS4 version. I for one am certainly not going to pick up DaSII over BB.

i think the release date is kind of odd being only two weeks away from Bloodborne. But if they want to change it, they need to do it for all versions. The PR of trying to do a platform exclusive here could damage the brand similarly to what happened with Rise of the Tomb Raider.

The DkS2 DLC is some of the best areas in any Souls game, period. It's vastly more content in terms of sheer size/play time than Artorias, and every bit as good (does everyone forget the dull parts of that well loved expansion? Because I don't. It was great, just not perfect).

The fact that this includes that AND extra content is a great deal. Only game this year I've sunk 100 hours into (we'll see how DA:I keeps up).

All of the B-team nonsense regarding DkS2 needs to stop also. Yes, the game had issues (the way the world is connected isn't perfect, but it also vastly improved pacing, so I'll take the trade-off) but it's easily my GOTY. Combat felt near perfect, visually the art style is still unmatched and it has atmosphere in spades.

Anyone who missed out because of all the Gaf negativity needs to give it a shot. Especially if it's running at 60FPS as I really hope it is (game was incredibly well optimised on PC, it'd be bizarre for it not to).

Glass half full kinda guy :)

Amen brotha

With that, I think im done with the PS3 version anyway then as i Havent played it months anyways after taking an extended break

What "B-Team nonsense"? Are you upset at the fact that that is what the community calls them?

It has been confirmed that a completely different team worked on Dark Souls II. Call them "Team 2", call them "The Better Team", or call them "FromSoft Ninja Squad" - it really doesn't matter. The fact is that the majority of the community found a the B Team's game to be inferior to Miyazaki's, so the name stuck. There's nothing to "stop".

I was going to buy DSII (PC) over winter break, but now I'll just wait for this to come out and play it next summer. If the price is $40 will buy on release date..

I have no issue with them being compensated for porting the game to Xbone/PS4 for DX11/PS4-equivalent features. BUT I do take issue with the fact their essentially treating the PC platform like it's a 360 or PS3, it's not, and could from the very release of the PC port easily accommodate these "graphical/sound adjustments" now being done for the XB1/PS4 and still have the balls to charge money for it, when there's really no real hassle in implementing DX11 stuff on any mid-range modern PC. That's the issue I have.

The fact they seem to want to charge for a "upgrade" or possibly whole new game for what amounts to a game that could easily be ran at 60fps at max settings on a GTX 460+Q9400+8GBDDR3 is a mindblowing ripoff to say the least. If you're gonna charge money for a "upgrade" that's mostly visual, than it sure as hell better compete with Crysis 3/Witcher 3/AC:U/FC4 at Ultra max settings, otherwise it's ridiculous and a waste of money. It's like paying $15 for Doom 3: BFG Edition to look like the best graphical mods that exist for the original game. It's dumb.

Specifically to Dark Souls 2 - there is a lot of content yes but almost all of it is... kind of dull. A fair amount of it feels aimless, it feels like people just trying to make "content" instead of levels with a point. Like just look at a level like 4-2 in Demon's, you get an immediate feeling of what the level designers were going for (with enemies custom made for that scenario, the grim reaper and those dudes who shoot laser beams a mile away, all meticulously placed). Most of the enemies in Dark 2 feel interchangeable, beyond aesthetics they could work in most areas. Also Dark 2 has a shit ton of bosses, with most of them being pretty bland (in boring circle arenas). I don't think Dark 2 is a bad game but it probably could have used some more focus. Like, if you look at a level/section after completing it and you can't figure out what the "point" of the level is (what element of the game the level is trying to stress) - it is probably a level that should have been removed. Also Dark 2 has the problem that it tends to aggressively reuse ideas from the previous games (and even some enemies/boss) with almost no spin on them.

Magic got more balanced over the course of the series, but this series to me always felt like it was designed around melee weapons (and maybe shields if you wanna be a wimp) with magic as a crutch. Killing enemies from a distance is probably the most boring thing you can do in the Souls games, so I try to avoid it. Also I appreciate image quality and framerate but ultimately game design > all that if there is no choice in the matter.

This is what I feel too. Sorry Durante.

Most assuredly it won't be full price. A discount for previous owners is pretty much a given.

Wait so PC people will have to pay to get what the game should have looked like in the first place?

Not cool.

Yeah, pretty much this.

So they intentionally gimped our features to match the current gen consoles, just so they could repackage those cut features when they re-released the game for the next gen consoles and we have to buy it all over again.

Fuck. You.

They are patching some of the new stuff in (new npc and encounters, which seem to be the meat and potatoes of this) and i really don't see how much of a visual upgrade Dx11 could bring (the trailer looks the same, really).

And again, it's not like R* patched in the first person of GTAV current gen, in last gen's versions.
So i don't see it as that outrageous, but of course, i'll wait on more detailed explanation on what's new, before calling them out on it.

Sweet!

Probably gonna skip Bloodborne for this and FFT0.
I need my Sakuraba fix

I didn't buy any of the DLC, so I'm looking forward to the new stuff.

Also, that sounds like a live violin I hear at the beginning of the trailer. :D

Exactly. And of course, Shrine of Amana is a fantastic area as well. And so is the whole Dragon Aerie/Shrine passage.

And that's before going into the DLC.

"Dull"? I'm sorry I just don't get it.

Shrine of Amana is beautiful.

But seriously, fuck Shrine of Amana. Those casters. At that cave. FUCK SHRINE OF AMANA.

Nice music too. Y'all people saying DkS2 looks bad have not seen it at 1080p60FPS on PC. Gorgeous game.

P.S. Fuck Shrine of Amana.

You know, if the new versions actually fix how fucking awful the hitboxes are, I think that alone seals the deal on it being the definitive version.

There was just something so baffling in a game that is supposed to be around reasonable defeats being the same game where attacks that don't even get within inches of your character cause damage and death. As many shortcomings the game had, shit like that almost automatically makes it a weaker game than the prior Souls games, as it's more potent than ever in Dark Souls II. And the people somehow defending it just astounds me.

I'm sure the DLC is good, because the entire design around them seems like an apology for the rest of the game. Despite this, the core meat of the game is like rotten flesh on a decalcified bone; jiggling it about is going to highlight how messy of a thing it is. Three badass areas do not make for a game that is mostly haphazard in design and scope.

Playing this game after bloodborne will be a dissappointment. I will probably skip or play this game first.

I have no doubt in my mind, that Bloodborne will be a much better game than DkS2, but actually going from a 60fps game to what will most likely be a sub30 one (as tradition imposes) will be the bigger shock between the two.

This doesn't look like a remaster at all. Where the hell is the old lighting?

They can't add lens flair and expect everyone to think it has greatly enhanced graphics, right?

To me they have no excuse, they have to put the old lighting back in the game for this to be worthy of a repurchase. The systems can handle it, so to me the only excuse would be Namco not wanting to spend the time adding the lighting back in. If so, they can't expect me to spend more money for the same game.

Soooo, does this mean Heide's Tower has drakes in it now?

Would kinda make sense considering the Dragonrider boss is there.

The issue isn't just about lighting. The E3 footage had significantly higher polygon count and much better textures (texture tiling and fixed timesteps in 2014 LMAO).

The PC version will be handled in one of two ways. Either they will set up an,upgrade DLC or a separate app in the registry.
With either choice, they will likely tie ownership of the original game and apply a loyalty discount.

Shrine of Amana is great aesthetically and very atmospheric, but I always hated the enemy placement.

Damn... I was really excited to hear this, but clearly I misread things the first time around!

Folks on PC need to rebuy for the graphical updates? That's seriously some bullshit. If this game has been rebuilt from the ground up, then maybe I'd understand, but I certainly haven't seen anything to suggest that.

It sadly doesn't seem like there are any significant asset upgrades in the screenshots they've released so far. Or lighting for that matter.

If the required HDD space for the new version ends up being 15gigs like the Japanese site says, there's not a lot of room for ton of new assets there unfortunately since vanilla with all dlc takes 14gigs.

This is exactly my thought too. When I'm on my way to Dead Man's Wharf (that was the name, wasn't it?), when venturing somekind of a flooded interior of the tower, I'm wondering what was they thinking when made it because the enemies were hulking iron giant while there is no big entrance, at least as big as they are, to be found. In Anor Londo, I remember in the cathedral where you fought Smough and Ornstein, there is huge door where supposedly the iron guardian that guard the way to boss can enter.

Level design in Dark Souls and Demon's Souls are organic. They feel like an actual place where someone live or built it for certain purposes. On the other hand, Dark Souls 2 level design is defintely feel more "gamey" to me rather than organic. This is no way means that Dark Souls 2 is bad gameplay, it's just missing something that makes Demon's Souls and Dark Souls so engrossing and memorable in the first place.

Why would you skip Miyazaki's game for this? Honest question really.

At first I was like yeeeaaah,

but then i saw those spiders in the trailer and knew i wouldnt be double dipping (I just really hate fighting those things)

Besides, Bloodborne is a coming (and I still have the ps3 copy of Ds2

Still on the fence for this.
On the one hand I haven't played the DLC yet and would like to experience it, on the other hand I've had absolutely no desire to replay DSII again after getting the plat on PS3.
Was a fun game but hardly the unforgettable experience that was DeS and DS1..

Will wait for footage of the released PS4 version. If it's with revamped lighting, 1080p and 60 FPS I might bite..

Dark Souls 2 was the largest launch on Steam this year. Needless to say, the PC ports have been very successful for From and Namco.

I know right? Then why didn't they upgrade the PC version beforehand? Why wait for the "new gen" consoles? They either think that the latter is more profitable than a PC port, or they needed some funding and waited for a change to remaster the game for multiple platforms.
