Box Office Challenge! 5 highest grossing films worldwide of the next three years?

Avatar 2 could be down 46% from Avatar's WW box office and still tie for Avengers WW. The first movie was a colossal monster of epic proportions and yes I'm sure a lot of that will be due in large part to being a cultural phenomenon at the time but I really don't see how you can't fathom Avatar 2 having profound success financially considering the success of the first movie combined with the state of the WW box office and how well iMax has been doing in the last 10 years of which Avatar plays strongly towards

It's certainly a possibility that another movie takes the crown from Avatar 2 in this comparison but Avatar 2 is going to do extremely well unless something goes horribly wrong

I don't think there's many people that think Avatar 2 will make more than the first. But it makes sense that it could come within spitting distance of it worldwide. Even if the sequel suffered a $500m drop WW from all territories EXCEPT China, China has since exploded like crazy since the first film essentially opened that market for the taking. Cameron and Fox have been very savvy about partnering with the right Chinese distributors and production houses since to make sure that when the sequels do hit, China will be where they hit ridiculously hard.

I'm sure Avatar 2 will open big and make a shit ton of money, more than a billion dollars (2bil? maaaaaybe), but some people here are expecting it to hit the 3bil record, which tbh would be shocking to me. As I said, the 3D thing isn't hot anymore..and it is no longer "Cameron's first movie in more than a decade after TITANIC!". Avatar made that much money mainly because the hype at the time, not to mention that 2009 only had UP, Half-blood Prince, Trans2mers, ice age and the twilight crap.
2016 will have BatvSup, Captain America 3, Finding Dory, New X-Men, How to Train your Dragon 3, Marvel Project (Dr. Strange?), 2nd Lego Movie, New ice age, Planet of Apes, Alice in Wonderland sequel, Terrible Spider-man 3 and apparently Independence Day 2 and a Harry Potter spin-off.

Yeah, it's gonna be a blockbuster orgy.

Avatar made all that bank because of word of mouth. Not some pre-installed bullshit 'Hype' that was contained to pretty much the internet alone. Second weekend with less than 6% drops don't happen because of hype. And certainly not because of hype over a director's name that hasn't been at the head of a feature in 12 years.

The revisionist history on Avatar is always hilarious. '3D gimmick factor' also doesn't account for Avatar holding the record for highest-selling 2D bluray.

I hope that theaters will do some screenings of Avatar 1 by the time 2 comes out. I still haven't seen it in 3D and really want to do so. The ultimate edition blu will have to suffice for now.

I wonder if any of these movies people are mentioning will have high profile Chinese actors? Seems to have helped Transformers and X-Men this year.

The haven't even started filming the Avatar sequels yet, I won't rank them until I see a teaser, the second one cold come out in 2018 for all I know.

Batman v Superman will make a lot of money but not enough to crack the top 5, it won't even make as much as Mockingjay 2.

Well the reason GotG2 isn't filming sooner than it is, is precisely because Zoe Saldana has put aside most of next year for the Avatar films.

X men: DOFP beat Cap2 and almost beat Guardians and you think BvS will loose to Cap3?

Man of Steel wasn't that well received so I don't expect BvS to get a boost from that and Affleck as the new Batman will make many people say "Eh, not Bale", it will make hundreds of millions, no doubt but it will definitely lose to Cap3, after Cap2 and Avengers 2 Cap3 will make crazy money.

I forgot about the new X Men movie.

1. Star Wars : The Force Awakens
2. Avengers : Age of Ultron
3. Captain America : Civil War
4. Batman vs Superman : Dawn of Justice
5. Hunger Games : Mockingjay - Part 2

Last one could easily be swapped out for Avatar 2, Jurassic World, or Fast & Furious Seven.

Too many variables, too hard to predict. Will Avatar 2 suffer a similar fate Sin-City did?

If quality is top notch across the board (90%+ RT).

1. Avengers AoU
2. BvS
3. Star Wars : Episode VIII
4. Avatar 3
5. Guardians 2

I need to change this up a bit since I have more info on the content coming up.

1. Avengers AoU
2. Star Wars : Episode VIII
3. CIVIL WAR
4. Avatar 3
5. Guardians 2

Based on a lot of peoples rankings they are predicting Episode VII will make LESS than Revenge of the Sith which came out before the overseas box office blow up and 10 years ago when ticket prices have inflated a lot since then.

I...don't understand that logic?

Edit: oh it was before they saw the trailer. Makes sense. I mean people predicting Fast 7 will make more than Star Wars. Hilarious.

I expect that a completely unexpected film will show up anywhere in positions 2-5. Nobody thought that Skyfall would be as successful as it turned out to be, and only the insane would have predicted that Frozen would catch fire the way it did.

Avatar 2 should be the biggest moneymaker because it's the follow up to one of the most beloved films of all time made by the director of two of the most beloved films of all time. I expect that Cameron will show the world something that hasn't ever been seen before, and that it will bring in the crowds.

Nolan and Bale aren't making Batman vs. Superman, and Man of Steel had a mixed reception so I don't expect this film to be as successful as the others on the list. Finding Dory is only a placeholder - there will probably be at least one really successful family film, and this is the most likely of the bunch.

The revisionist history on Avatar is always hilarious. '3D gimmick factor' also doesn't account for Avatar holding the record for highest-selling 2D bluray.
Home video sales are also a good indication of how enduring a film's popularity is.

I do think that James Cameron's name did help Avatar, but it did so by selling the film in places like China and Japan where Titanic was really popular. After it metaphorically got it's foot in the door, Avatar was able to sell on its own merits.

You have to remember we are on a forum where people have said that Star Wars isn't relevant anymore.

1. Episode VII
2. Age of Ultron
3. Avatar 2
4. Batman v Superman
5. Guardians of the Galaxy 2

BvS is more likely to be awful than any of the others mentioned so that's the only one I feel iffy on.

Well let's see.

Avatar 2 and Avengers 2 are the obvious top two (if Avatar actually comes out). Star Wars seems like an easy 3rd. It depends if the JJ name will hurt it, even then 1B is a lock at least.

4 and 5.. I guess a toss up between BvS and an animated movie. Would love for BvS to top #1 but unfortunately probably won't come close. But i will have the nerve to say it will probably be the best of the bunch story wise.

...I just watched the star wars trailer...

1 Star Wars
2 Avengers
3 B v S
4 Avatar
5 GotG 2

why does star wars hype always work on me.... dammit!

Cap 3 has Cap America, Iron Man AND Black Panther.

It's going to get IM3's gross at BARE MINIMUM. I'll go even as far as to say it'll gross close to Avengers 1.

Now Age of Ultron, if it's just as fun and good a crowd pleaser as the original? 2 billion.

Bat vs Supes will do a billion, but I'll say it won't out gross Cap 3. Deck is stack against them.

Star Wars will do wonderfully. Though I'm hesitant to say how well. Still think Avengers will beat it.

My friend strongly believes that people have realized that Avatar wasn't that good and won't watch the sequel next time around. I mean that could be the case domestically but definitely not globally. I still think it'll crack $2bn.

Avatar 2 will be big but that lightning isn't striking twice, especially when so many went sour on the first after release and the 3D train having essentially run it's course

Episode VIII is what you need to be keeping an eye on.

If Episode VII is awesome VIII can hit into the 2 Billion easily.
