I think in one of commentary DVDs you see George talk about the body guards and deliberately trying to get it across that they can stop light saber without having to stop and explain it.

That whole bit plays out in the movie just fine.

They could, with a few lines of dialog, or even a "show, don't tell" someone strikes the material, it doesn't break, surprised looks all around.

And like most things awesome about the EU, it's from Old Republic era, tales of the Jedi and up, and according to wookipedia, even mentioned/shown in the clone wars, which means it's Canon!

Well it's a teaser, there's not much to discuss. Other than the silly droid and new lightsaber it was pretty much standard Star Wars stuff.
