Star Wars The Force Awakens Trailer

Exactly what I was thinking when I first saw it. Screw practicality, it's a freaking lightsaber claymore, and that's pretty amazing sounding to me.
Yeah, I'm in this camp. Long time SW fan, but I never cared about the more intricate nerdisms of the series, which is why I think the sword looks badass. People get so worked up over the stupidest things, cue Conan O'Brien's nerd mocking sounds(nasel-pitched voice spouting gibberish about Star Trek and Gandalf). That, and Triumph.

Saberstaff was just Lucas fucking around, reading expanded universe novels trying to incorporate it into canon history made me laugh. With saberstaff, a lot of your movements are limited, the only advantage of using one is not many people are used to fighting against one.

this makes sense, the dual saber always reminded me of the Klingon bat'leth, looks cool but it's damn wonky to use (and dangerous for the wielder), but at least its got a purpose in a fight, since it sort of doubles the chance of hitting your enemy with all sorts of swings. This one has a laser hilt that makes no sense imo, and it also looks bad (still imo)

...Did this scam website pay all these people to participate in this fake conversation about a movie 13 months from release being "leaked" online to promote their website? They even upvoted that person 40 times. Damn these guys are really going the extra mile to trick people

I have shuddered!

What do you mean crossguard makes no sense?

"I'm sure it's true because it's a highly authority blog about movies and they wouldn't risk their reputation just because of this one "hot" article."

Of course, but I cant understand why having a crossguard is worse than high chance of self-mutilation.
It's more the impractical design that sucks. Saber users haven't needed a guard in any of the movies, why is it necessary now? If it's meant to be actually be used as a guard, why not have the extra blades actually be connected to the primary blade so it can actually work? If the guard emitter is made of resistant metals, why not make a simple guard made of metal in the first place?

It just screams poor design. Plus, if it's meant to resemble a claymore instead of the light sticks Lucas used in the prequels, he should be using two hands instead of one.

You're not even considering the possibilities it's 1) aesthetic and/or 2) offensive, not defensive.

The shot of the X-wings coming in over the water is absolutely nasty!!!! I could watch that gif all fucking day. That shit is red hot. Nuclear.

If they're vents like it's been suggested then whatever. As an offensive tool though, I just can't see how that'd work, and I even if it could, we'd have evidence of historical weapons with sharp, bladed hilts.

Yeah, their dedication is hilarious.

Considering I threw it together in a couple seconds, I thought it was fun for something i didnt try hard with.

Any Suggestions for a better one?

Needs more Spaceballs.

i cant see it. what purpose does a crossguard lightsaber have?
Umm protecting the wielder?

First, no one thought about hacking at other people's hands before, ask Lucas. Second, light saber hilts are not made from resistant materials, you can easily trash one as shown in the prequel trilogy. Third, people use one hand, two hands interchangeably in the movies, is this a serious question?

Ahh that. Yea that won't happen at all. Instead of FOX fanfare expect the Disney theme.
There is no Disney logo at all on the end of the trailer just lucasfilm. They are doing this marvel studio style it seems. Don't expect any Disney logo.

Also for those who missed Lucasfilm confirmed the voice over was Andy Serkis

If you're grinding saber against saber, you could pivot around their saber a bit and drive one of those crossguards into your opponent's head or whatever. Especially if you've got a high, horizontal position with your saber. I could see the wielder using it defensively, using their opponent's momentum against them and stabbing them with a crossguard in one fluid parry. Also good for attacking their hands.

Oh and it fucking looks cool which is the only defense for lightsabers in the first place.

Since the crossguards have a sort of smokey appearance, they could simply be heat exhausts for what is a larger "blade" than we've seen before.

Hell, I like that there's no logo at all.

I think it'd be cool if the movie started that way. Final trailer plays. house lights go down.

THE VERY FIRST THING YOU SEE is "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away..."

I'm trying to keep hope alive that Disney and Fox can come together and release a remastered, unaltered version of the originals some day.

Disney's much better about doing things fans want because money. I'm sure they're pushing for it.

I'd really like to watch the original films again. Haven't seen them in a decade or so, no thanks to Mr. Lucas.

It's impressive how you missed the point of every single thing that I said. Bravo!

First, a guard would make sense but they've never been used before so their sudden inclusion stands out. Second, other people have suggested the guard emitter is made of resistant metals, not myself. Third, I was talking about the poor claymore imitation the new saber is trying to pull off, not anything seen in previous movies, and that a claymore used with one hand is dumb. If they're just going to use the new design in the same fashion as the traditional saber, it's superfluous in the worst way, with changes being made simply because it doesn't want to look like what came before. Of course we have barely anything to go by at this point but it's reasonable to not like what's been shown, just as reasonable as it may be to be excited.

This is like, up there with the greatest unrealized business opportunities right alongside an Axl and Slash Guns n Roses reunion tour.

Both Disney and Fox really like money, so I'm confident they'll figure it out.

EDIT:
Yeah, it was a compromise. Iger wanted Summer 2015, Abrams wanted Summer 2016. December 2015 split the difference, gave Abrams a little more time, and Iger got to keep his promise to shareholders about Episode 7 hitting in 2015.

Thanks for this reply. Totally forgot about Iger painting himself and Abrams into a corner with the shareholders.

All my responses to this basically boil down to "if you were reading the spoilers, you'd see why your argument is problematic."
