Star Wars The Force Awakens Trailer

I wasn't really sure how I felt about the teaser. It doesn't really feel like it's for me.

I was hoping it'd target the older set by showing the classic characters (props to JJ for the restraint). Instead of Han, Luke and Leia, the classic characters we got were the Falcon, X-wings, Stormtroopers and the familiar snap-hiss of a particular lightsaber.

Disney doing for Star Wars what they've done with Marvel would be awesome.

Parents around here with kids are going to get to watch their kids grow up falling in love with the same universe they did. And I think that's pretty sweet.

Keeping away from this thread. No idea who any of the actors are, no idea what the story is, and I wanna keep it that way.

That rolling droid doesn't really make sense.

Still intrigued and much more excited for this than any other movie right now.

Legitimately just choked on my drink hahahahaha! I love this little droid but this is freaking amazing.

it looks like he should have taken his whole torso.

Shat doesn't make sense about it? It's a platform with gyros on a motorized ball. Something like that would pretty much be possible today even

Yep. With a magnetized little head. I think he makes MORE sense than a human shaped droid because he's going to be rolling over all kinds of terrain and such. Really smart design.

None of it makes sense. It's science fiction. :P

*tilts glasses*

Actually, Star Wars is space fantasy and NOT science fiction. And I resent your characterization of science fiction not making sense.

Fantasy is the fiction of the impossible.

Science fiction is the fiction of taking what could be possible and extrapolating it to its extreme in many cases.

In a world where a beam of light extends from a handle and does not extend indefinitely, the hilt is where some of you draw the line?

I don't care about the science, I just think it's dumb as fuck and serves no purpose unless its meant to be exhaust ports of sort.

Man, the original Star Wars, and several other classics, are fortunate the Internet wasn't around when they released. Holy shit the bitching.

Imagine the reaction to Ewoks if Jedi was released today as the follow up to Empire.

Holy fucking shit it would be Jar Jar levels of hate.

Yup. This is why I consider Star Trek science fiction and Star Wars to be fantasy. Now, JJ's Stark Trek is more fantasy than science fiction, but it's obvious that he's just wanted to make Star Wars for a while now.

While i might think the saber design is a little silly I can understand them wanting to change it up or whatever. Gotta have the sith move away from the standard designs. Shows how how cuh-raaaaizy they really are or whatever.

What bugs me about the hilt is that the emitter part of the hilt sticks out like 2? inches - maybe more? before it pops the actual lightsaber out of it. Doesn't that completely defeat the purpose of a hilt of any sort? If another lightsaber slides down the blade it will just chips straight through the metal part of the hilt instead of touching the mini lightsaber blades? Right?

Maybe it's designed around a different form of lightsaber combat to be used when they do that classic blade lockup thing. Poking people in the face and shit.

Fucking sound design up in this piece is CRAZY GOOD. Like.. at no point in the prequel was the classic Star Wars music used to this same effect IMO. Best part of the dude in the forest is his walk. Comes across as strong but fucked in the best way. Like he's got prosthetic legs he isn't used to or maybe he's just stomping through the woods pissed.. either way - I think Luke or someone flying at him on a speeder is a good call. Would be a fantastic call back and nod to just how badass luke is if this sith dude cut off the front of his bike and Luke just jumps off and lands behind him perfect like "Sup whats your name?"

You're mentioning science as it relates to Star Wars? Dude, you have to stahp. You can think it's dumb all you want but in the same breath you cannot, with the same logic, wholly accept everything else. I can understand minor complaints here and there but I swear it feels like certain things are nitpicked to the point of exhaustion when these trailers are released. And what's ironic, if not hypocritical, is that EVERYONE in this thread will be seeing this movie on day one or around day one. At the end of the day, these nitpick aren't deal breakers for anyone. We all love things like Star Wars and at least get a little excited bare minimum. Just calm down a bit and realize you will watch the movie regardless.

The way some of you are reacting, you'd think he'd pulled out a spoon.

It's crazy because it looks more and more like Abrams is basing a lot of stuff off of the original McQuarrie artwork for the original trilogy. First the X-Wing changes, and now this.

Isn't Star Wars rebels doing the same thing? To be honest I wish they would stop and come up with new stuff. Some concepts are good but others were put on the chopping block for a reason.

The rolling droid makes TARS look like a cunt, and it hasn't even done anything yet.

The design in this trailer alone is spectacular.

TARS design was the boldest in a long time. Nolan had elephants balls to have the courage to go with the designs.

Random SW pic of the hour:

TARS is moronic. Being bold is not something that should be applauded if it's in-conjunction with something stupid.

Regardless, he reminded more of the Hitchhikers robot actually.

Tars was just a giant scientific probe and number cruncher that was interfaced through speech. It was there in part for the sanity of the crew.

Man some of you wear your cynicism on your sleeves. Can't wait until Avatar 2 comes out and Sculli can't enjoy it.

Alright, for those who have read the EU book series, The Legacy of the Force: do you feel that
Darth Caedus
would've made a sinister villain if Legacy's story were used for Episode VII?

That's just the awfulness of the prequels. I hope the maimmings and odd lightsaber grazing wounds are fixed in this new trilogy. It always seemed stupid to me the way Dooku kind of touched Obiwan's shoulder and thigh with his lightsaber.

He was toying with them.... it's part of his characterization.

So just like any robots in sci-fi? TARS was a tool and knew it. Yet this pre-programmed personality output made us feel for the chunk of metal like it was another member of the crew and it didn't need cute beeps and boops to achieve that.

If there were about 20 movies before he turns, certainly.

Ok, I'm guessing Boyega's character was in disguise as a Stormtrooper and is now on the run. He made it to Tattooine to look for a certain Jedi Knight.

TARS is the new best robot in films. Believable, logical yet very cute in a functional way.
No, it's not any of those things.

It's not believable. He looks like he was built from a completely different species. Humanity wouldn't design a robot like that. Firstly, he's a stupid physical shape. The reason we have humanoid robots in media is because that's what we'll eventually actually make. Everything we design is made to be operated by humans, so for a robot to be helpful for anything beyond specific tasks, it needs to be human shaped and to be human-like in articulation and movement. Secondly, he has a screen and firmware bios that looks a good hundred years behind his robotics.

He isn't logical. He says he knows the docking is impossible, and yet it isn't.

Cute is a more subjective one, I don't think he's cute, he doesn't look or act cute.

I like the idea of provocative AI, I love that Siri appears to have a very dry sense of humor and light sarcasm, but TARS didn't work for me.

Yes... my point. I think TARS is one of the best robots in film. It actually served it's purpose, and was always treated as what it was. It was great in it's functionality and was issues around as an extension of the crew's resources. I love it.
