If episode 9 was like episode 4 of this season then I would've said it was good, maybe even great. As it is I'm really disappointed that this is the 9th episode with only four remaining. It's like they only know how to tackle 1 topic at a time per episode and spirit vines happened to finally be the topic of the day.

Re:Bolin, I don't care for his relationship with Opal at all. The majority of his actions feel forced and he doesn't come across as genuine. His lines are also downright terrible at times. Seriously no one talks like that. Besides that I was glad to see Asami shit on Varrick's face turn despite his amusing comeback.

Also nice to see Zaheer, but disappointing to know he will never leave those shackles.
 
Funny thing about Zaheer is that he seems to be a damned master of going into the spirit world. In terms of future Avatar lore, Zaheer could have an impact by spending the rest of his life as a more or less permanent resident of the spirit world.

It would be interesting to see spirit Iroh and Zaheer get into a debate.

I was of course extremely sad that he'd be in jail, but that didn't stop me from thinking "Wow how could you be stupid enough to get yourself into this" when I heard the news.

Not the same, at all. The police are (or are supposed to be) someone of fair authority and being held in jail sucks, but isn't necessarily harmful. In general, your brother is presumably safe. He's not even been in long enough for 'don't drop the soap' to apply. I would also be willing to be rational if my parents were put in jail, because one way or another, I'd probably be able to get them out. It'd just be a pain in the ass to do so, but they'll be safe. It's a totally different context. Suyin is in danger of not just death, but being subjected to treatment that no human being, regardless of what they did, should be put through. Opal might never see her again. However it turns out, you'll see your brother again.

So, if you want a more analogous scenario to what your suggesting, this is more like if the police walked up to your door and explained that some gang had taken in your brother, and were cutting him, piece by piece. THey've found 3 fingers thus far, and a toe and say they expect larger limbs next before they find the body. In that situation, I don't see you stopping and asking "Well, what is the gang's side to this story? Maybe they're justified in what they're doing. Maybe my brother did something to deserve it." Even if your brother did do something to piss them off, I find it doubtful you will care at that particular point in time. If you care about your brother at all, you'll just want him back.

First of all, I wasn't trying to compare my situation directly to Opal's, I was just giving you a similar situation that happened to me. You tried to claim how I would act in a situation like that, and I don't agree, and I gave you a similar situation where I didn't think so irrationally. I think I know more about myself that you do.

We should probably just agree to disagree tbh. It'd probably be for the best at this point lol. I struggle with clearly communicating my stance so far into a discussion, especially when a lot of different points are brought up. You can reply to this, but I don't think this is worth too much more effort at this point lol. Hopefully there are no left over hard feelings from this.

Edit: Also, I do agree with a lot of what you've said throughout this though.

I can see that being the case. I like Mako's seriousness, but Bolin has gotten a bit grating this season. It's a shame because I think if they just toned him down a bit, he'd be a fun and great character. But instead they pigeon-hole him into one role that really limits him.

I think the fact that what we are dealing is permanent damage to a loved ones well being is an important factor. As I said, i wouldn't care that much if my loved ones ended up in jail either. It'd suck, but it's just jail. It isn't murder, torture or rape. That is the level of damage Opal is dealing with.

Your brotherr being captured and tortured to death basically is opals situation as close as a contemporary scenerio can be. Or atleast what Opal believes it can be, since she explicitly said she is worried about her mom being tortured and if Kuvira is willing to do that, there is also no reason why she shouldn't be considering killing her as well.

But don't worry about hard feelings or anything. We're cool, it's just an internet discussion.
 
I mean, now that Korra has her mojo back, she can basically one shot Kuvira right? That's probably why they're delaying the next confrontation.

Unless Kuvira gets her deterrent in the form of nuclear spirit bomb.
 
Saw the last few pages and i'm gonna go with Veelk here tbh. Im not saying she is vindicated or anything though.

it seems like the alternate would mostly help out Bolin with less heat and eh the dude doesn't need that kind of defense for the dumb shit he did imo.

Also didn't Katara do something as dumb due to being really irrational because of her mom's death? (instead of saving someone she went to eliminate someone) She calmed down eventually after doing the thing (though not fully because he was left alive) so we'll see if something similar will happen here.

Hell now that i think about it this current attempt seemed almost lifted from that ATLA event (iirc Zuko helped her on that crazy quest mainly because he wanted her forgiveness after all the shit he did)

Bolin and Mako worked well in season 3. And of course Bolin and Varrick as well, for different reasons. Mako is serious and Varrick is almost goofier but in a different way. Bolin worked well with both.

I think his relationship with Opal provides no chemistry though, but let's see in the next episodes.

Also, I guess it just occurred to me that Varrick is a bit of a goofy character. But he's not stupid. I guess that's the main difference between him and Bolin. Except when they're together. Then Bolin somehow is the more rational one with common sense and Varrick is the one doing crazy things. Interesting how that works.

Verrick is eccentric, not stupid. He makes connections between ideas that seem like they'd never work together or are inappropriate for one another. It's creativity.

Bolin's problem is a failure to make connections between even sensible connections.

For example, Bolin never questioned Kuvira just because he didn't think to do so, even though he had reason to. The best argument you could make is that he just likes to think the best in people, but while that'd fit his character, I don't think that's indicated in the show. On the other hand, Verrick never questioned Kuvira because he didn't care, until he had that random growth of conscience.

Varrick seems more of a eccentric though since he's smart as hell but just does some weird shit for someone that smart. Its apparently enough to make Bolin look adjusted in comparison.
 
I just can't get over how awesome Zaheer was in the last episode. The writers just handled him so well, mainly with showing that Zaheer knew full well that he fucked up by bringing about Kuvira.
 
Bolin is at his peak when he isn't trying to force horrible, shit tier quality that would at best get a grin from a 3 year old high on weed.

Sokka was more naturally funny, Bolin has been desperately trying to be the "Sokka" of the group without any of the seriousness to balance it and the jokes are HORRIBLE.

When he's paired with someone else for a long period of time that oddly enough seems to be when the jokes die down a lot. Being with Varrick has made him much more likable, especially since Varrick takes all of the comedy and does something hilarious with it.

Bolin needs to stop joking around, he clearly can't do it.

the beifong reunion as a sneak peak for episode 10. They even have a big ass photo with toph, lin, opal and bolin on facebook that just popped up on my news feed. Argh.

Yeah that's what I meant. For example when Varrick decides to stay on the train after it's going to blow up, or he gives up in the forest, etc. Bolin seems like the reasonable one in those situations.

I just enjoy the humor we get from Varrick a lot more than anything we get from Bolin. Maybe Bolin's brand of humor is targeted at a younger audience? Not sure.
 
Woo! Watched through all of TLA earlier this year and now I'm finally caught up on Korra. Not sure what to do with this whole waiting an entire week for an episode now.

LOK has always been sorely lacking for a dynamic as hilarious as that of Sokka and Toph.

The VA for sokka was a kid in high school. He nails his lines because he is a kid.

The VA for bolin is a professional standup comedian and it shows. He's a funny guy but the way they explained his method is he just improvs hundreds of possible lines and they pick the "best". That's terrible.

Sokka's voice actor was an actor on All That. That technically counts since it's a sketch comedy.

Bolin is just joke after joke after joke. No breaks. His best moment was during Book 2 when he fought in the mover theater. I think that's the most serious I've ever seen him.

Mako at least has some awkward comedy to back up the serious nature at times.

Yeah Nick ain't the best at hiding spoilers. Though at least it hasn't got quite as bad when Nick put a big spoiler gif of Zaheer killing the Earth Queen on it's site a couple of days before the episode aired during Book 3.

I agree with this.

We saw plenty of serious Sokka (who was serious by nature and not goofy, that alone makes a HUGE difference in how comedy should be approached) even back in S1 such as episodes where we meet the water tribe member whose friends with Sokkas dad.

Bolin on the other hand is just a joke. Literally. There's no personality because he's goofy and being designated as the "sokka" of team korra means he rarely gets a chance to shine. Even with his moments with Varrick I felt like they held back from maturing Bolin simply because he would lose his "funniness" when in reality it'd be maturing out of his "goofiness".

Not sure if I'm explaining that right, seems like I just jumbled up the words I wanted to say but *shrugs* thats all I got to say about Bolin.

Bolin can be extremely lovable (as a goofy person is) and I feel that if they cut down on the jokes tremendously we could really get to like Bolin.

Not to mention that if Bolin did show his more endearing and serious manner that we only ever see glimpses off his shipping fanart would increase a thousand fold.
