I wasn't previously aware of the very, very racist parts of reddit.

There are whole sub-reddits dedicated to n*ger this and n*gger that.

Now, I don't really know how to feel about the site. Damn, some of that stuff is just disgusting. I know we like to promote free speech and whatnot, but stuff like that isn't cool.

How do you feel about "big" sites allowing racism and probably other forms of harassment, insulting content, and more.

Inb4 4chan, of course. I might try to visit it less from now on. Any other similar sites I can check out?

I don't care about the site "allowing" it. It does disturb me, however, that so many of what I assume are young, tevh-savvy individuals are so unable to comprehend racial context.

A lot of subreddits are like that but not focused on that entirely. One in particular comes to mind... It isn't just Reddit. There are racist parts of all sorts of sites if you look for it honestly.

It's not some subreddits. The site is infested with racist comments. Reddit has turned into another Yahoo, Youtube comment section.

It's definitely not good, it gives these clowns a place to get together, rile each other up and pat each other on the back.

Hah, that's just the tip of the iceberg, there are some really fucked up sub-reddits if you dig deeper.

It shouldn't bother you, in that, you don't have to go to those particular categories. Reddit is a big site, with a big community, and every community has its share of weird/bad apples.

Same goes for 4chan, yes /b/ is a hive of stupidness, but that doesn't mean places like /sci/ or /vr/ are prohibited.

You wouldn't leave an entire place just because there's some avoidable undesirables no?

Like how I do when I use the internet. Unless I'm actively seeking out, I'm not seeing it.
Yep. It's hard to accidentally stumble upon subreddits like that. People that go there and complain are just looking for something to be offended about. It's unreasonable to expect that none of that stuff exist on a site like reddit

If you're using reddit for anything other than nakey pics you're doing it wrong.

+ gamedeals is all I use reddit for, tbqh

The back bayous of GAF ain't exactly utopia.

The good news is these places echo chambers of irrelevance. Might as well be hosted in the Titanic's Debate Hall.

I always felt racist undertones in many places on reddit. While the site is a good place for info or keeping up to date on certain subjects, I had to stop visiting this year because it became really uncomfortable for me (as a black male) to keep browsing the site.

I don't really use reddit, but I know there are also specifically misogynist subreddits. chances are there is a subreddit for pretty much every hategroup out there.

I'm not sure how to feel about it.

On one hand, having a community of like minded individuals can easily lead to "groupthink", and when you're basically bouncing ideas off a wall you don't have anybody there to step in and say "Um, no. No, you're not right at all. You're just biased and ingorant.".

On the other hand, at least it kind of segregates their opinions into little communities that you never have to read unless you want to see how ignorant people can be.

Overall I don't think there's any point in places like reddit closing those communities down. If they did that, the people from them would just find/form another community elsewhere.

So ultimately until the day when every person alive has no traces of ignorance left (don't see how this would ever happen) we will have communities for ignorant, like minded people. And we'll have to deal with the fact that other people hold opinions borne from ignorance which we either don't agree with, or are outright offended by.

internet is an uncontrolled domain, reddit is not. it happens UNDER reddit which is why I think its wrong. nomatter how hard reddit tries to spin it, its under their watch.

It's just a representation of real life. In the corners of your school campus or social circles you got the same not so hidden kind of crew hatin just to be hatin.

I really don't understand why Reddit allows those subs and subs like TheRedPill to exist.

They even let a child porn sub exist until the media shut it down, right?

and the school would remove it if it found out. social circles are uncontrolled circles which ins and outs.

does reddit allow antisemetic subreddits? and I mean actual blatant nazi subreddits

There are racist people everywhere even here on GAF its just not so open because mods keep it in check so big ups to them for doing that. However if you look for racism on the internet its not hard to find. People are more comfortable spreading there hate online then they are in public because they are safe and for the most part anonymous to the real world.

Fuck reddit.

When you decline to create or to curate a culture in your spaces, you’re responsible for what spawns in the vacuum.

Yeah, reddit is full of racist content and it definitely bleeds over into some of the bigger subs. Best thing to do is avoid the huge subs or reddit altogether.

not surprising, racism is everywhere, and Internet being the world's landfill will only amplify that shit. Isn't Stormfront still active?

the goal of reddit seems to be the 'internet's forum', so naturally it will be 90% noise. on the other hand, there are some good subs out there if you know where to look. still can't deal with comment nesting tho.

There's a reddit called /r/cutefemalecorpses or something like that.

Someone go there and find out if it still exists.

If you want a look at the real face of reddit go to r/all with a logged in account which shows the nsfw posts. Tons of racist and women jokes. On top of that the front page is filled with jilted exhusbands and boy friends, making every female look like satan.

Yep. I don't care if the specific subreddits are the way to go, I'm not hanging out anywhere where the top posts are memes about women being cheating sluts and black people jokes.

I remember a reddit admin posting to an LGBT subreddit a picture of a rainbow flag (or something of the effect) in their office and stating something along the lines of, "We stand with you!" Immediate response was "talk is cheap". Harassment, slurs, and casual homophobia are the name of the game on most subreddits and nothing's done about it. You can claim to be supportive all you want, but few will believe you when you condone hate.

There's zero opposition to subreddits that outright refer to members of racial minorities as "it". One subreddit specifically made to be a safe place for black people (which is actually very much needed on reddit) faced daily invasions of spammers from other subreddits. The moderators there appealed to the administrators and no action was taken. One of the moderators took to asking allied subreddits for help with moderation; an administrator outright banned her for it.

As I've recounted before, back in r/adviceanimals' heyday when "confession bear" was popular, the front page of reddit was flooded with those "memes" relating things like, "I'm not racist, but..." or "I'm totally black and I don't like how those other black people act". Ridiculous. Last I checked, most default subreddits are still on the "South Park is the bible" bandwagon and spam the word "fag" at each other. "Totally not in the homophobic sense" they say as they specifically use it in homophobic contexts. One post was about a gay kid having problems coming out and being supported by his father; the immediate top-voted comments were slurs toward him in a "funny" manner. Then you've got all the "stop flaunting your sexuality" posts...

Edit: Oh yeah, and some CP subreddits are still alive and well, I've heard. I mean, seriously?

Totally agree with this. I mean, I'd prefer if they didn't allow it, but the latter half of your statement concerns me much more overall.

How could you not notice? Reddit is a rascist, sexist, hateful place.

And I'm just talking about the default subs. Let's not even get to the sub reddits dedicated to hate and ignorance.

I still go there everyday :l

Human beings are horrible, violent, hate-filled beings. So you'll find that stuff online.

The question is whether or not there's something noble in allowing people to congregate and find community around the worst aspects of themselves.

Is it better to let honest representations of humanity exist, as a kind of abstract idealism that "honesty" is an inherent good? Or is public space not supposed to simply reflect humanity - but is instead meant to act as a "healthily repressive" structure that deliberately suppresses the worst in us?

That's a complicated fucking question, because lots of those words are super loaded.
