Star Wars The Force Awakens Trailer

That's awesome. I've always been curious about Lucas' plans for VII/VIII/IX, he seemed to at least have a few ideas. Like this quote from him on the Wookiepedia page for the sequel trilogy (apparently this was from around Empire Strikes Back's release):

"The prequel stories exist—where Darth Vader came from, the whole story about Darth and Ben Kenobi—and it all takes place before Luke was born. The other one—what happens to Luke afterward—is much more ethereal. I have a tiny notebook full of notes on that. If I'm really ambitious, I could proceed to figure out what would have happened to Luke."

It's interesting how Lucas referred to Darth Vader as "Darth". I think Obi-Wan also does that in Star Wars during their duel. Seems to confirm that Darth was originally just Vader's first name, not a Sith title or anything.

YO you left the door open for me!

So, it was eh. Which is expected. Again, the reason his Star Wars & Star Trek reviews were good were a) he had literally YEARS worth of online discussion and analysis of those movies to metabolize and b) his schtick was still fresh feeling.

Stoklasa killed us all to death with those reviews because he just distilled all the great analysis written by tens of other (better) film writers into a much more easy to digest form, and then performed a very fun character.

I don't think you're giving Stoklasa enough credit here. I could be wrong, but you're making it sound like he read a bunch of books and watched and read a bunch of other reviews and all the fan boards where everyone spent years talking about the issues with the films and then picked pieces from them to form his own reviews, when I just thought all the analysis was his own with no real outside influence, even if it was said before elsewhere.

Are the reviews really not his own personal analyses? Because Stoklasa doesn't strike me as the kind of guy who goes around reading and distilling fan board discussions.

I've made my explainations known, but I think this fan rendition isn't too bad.

GAF > internet > GAF.

I made that 'fan rendition', it's way back in the thread around page 60.

He's a fan of Star Wars he probably particiated in those discussions for years, himself.
i know i did, back in the day, so i can see all those analysis become part of his baggage through the years.
i don't think he went around copypasting ideas, as much as crystallized years of debates into one coherent piece.

Maybe, but that would be really weird to me, as Mike and Jay seem to barely use Twitter and Facebook, let alone discussion boards. They don't really strike me as discussion board types. Of course, that could have come on with age, but I've only ever seen them dismiss such things in a tongue and cheek way. The other RLM guys seem to be more that type.

I'm sure this has been posted before, but realising that the Millennium Falcon's new square dish is due to this blew my mind. If they've got this level of attention to detail, then I have a lot of faith in the film being great:

The villain shall be called Darth Secretus!
Don't give them ideas! :)

Yeah, I think it would have been better that way.

Yeah, that is a pretty cool touch.

the writing on his suit is "pull to inflate"

Good Morning America confirmed this morning (Remember, it's a Disney owned show/channel) that Andy Serkis is the voice over in the trailer and the saber heard at the very end of the trailer is Luke Skywalker's blue lightsaber he lost at the end of Empire Strikes Back.

The fact it is Luke's saber is curious but the fact it's his saber he lost at the end of Empire is VERY curious.

Saw this on reddit... let's compare

If they are trying to capture the feel of the OT I don't think they have quite met their match here. OT just looks incredibly detailed

Could they add more stuff through CGI? I mean, all that blank area behind him could be dressed up some I guess?

the new xwing is cleaner but i think that is to be expected with the advancement in tech.

For the better, I say. For practical reasons, why the hell would you want buttons and things up on the window frame and behind the operator?

Wonder if Oscar's character is the new Wedge. I doubt they would have dropped him in the teaser if he wasn't going to play a pivotal role in the upcoming battles. Or maybe they just wanted to get that shot in for nostalgia pandering.

Ooh thats cool. I guessed it was Luke a ways back in the thread but its Luke's old saber? Interesting.

Snowspeeders are 2 person crafts, there is a navigator/harpoon operator behind luke.

Yeah, but it's the same in the X-Wing above. It would make sense to have buttons on a transportation vehicle but a combat vehicle should have stuff at your fingertips or not far off. Having to reach up to press a button in combat doesn't really make sense.

but it's Star Wars, so anything is game

Like Windu said, the bottom one is a snowspeeder and there's a harpoon gunner sitting behind the pilot. Those buttons could be for him.

If the previous thousands of years of tech didn't make them sleek, I doubt another 50 would do it :) I like the older cockpits better, but the effects may be unfinished.

I really like that actually. Looks like an ancient saber, could even play it off as being Bane's.

The one in the trailer doesn't look ancient, it looks experimental, like it was jerry-rigged by somebody with no formal training in lightsaber construction.
I believe that is the point. Notice how the saber flows more like plasma and not the smooth line if light. Or its JJs rendition of a lightsaber.

You can hear the classic light saber sound at the end of the trailer so there likely be more standard ones too.

I really like the idea that these are exhaust vents rather than crossguard.

Boyega has an instant "I want to like him" look to him that pretty much everyone in the prequels lacked.

based Abrams

Haven't you read the youtube comments, liberal brainwashing diversity quota censorship, 2/10 would not torrent.

It will be hilarious once these people he realize he isn't a random stormtrooper but the main character hah.

Yeah the 2 new actors looked completely out of place as the atmosphere was completely OT as opposed to glycerine mess of Lucas but the actors were different and i wanted more or old crew but after seeing the teaser 30 times, I think both will kill it in their new protagonist roles.

Agree. Boyega showed more personality in 2 seconds of trailer than Hayden Christensen showed at any point in his two Star Wars films, ever.

There is something old school about the teaser, just a few seconds that it feels so much better than the prequel universe that Lucas created. I can't put my finger on it but it feels like how Luke was watching the sunsets in the OT, that epic feeling that just wasnt there in any of the new lucas movies and I feel it again in the desert shot, then the Falcon shot.

I wonder if the new saber design is partially meant to evoke a sort of anti-Christ tone. I mean it looks like a fucking blood-red upside-down cross. It wouldn't surprise me as Star Wars has always bathed in Biblical relations (which is why I don't mind Anakin being conceived by the Force). Sorry if I worded that inappropriately as I mean no offense to anyone.

I'm sure there are various reasons for the choice, but that's the one that sticks out to me.

I think the unstable saber leads me to believe the hilts are actually releases of energy because that saber is too powerful to be controlled.

I mean have we ever seen a saber that unstable

How cool would it be if you have this sith collecting all these ancient relics, banes saber,
Vaders mask
, used as inspirational fuel used by him to revive the sith legacy.

1.) It's tense.

2.) It doesn't have clowny CG.

3.) There is light-heartedness without feeling forced or obnoxious (the R2 unit).

4.) There are X-Wings, Tie Fighters and Millennium Falcons.

5.) There are desert planets.

success.

I'm usually not a fan of hyperboles but this is actually true.

no doubt. it wasn't really hyperbole. he was really bad in his role as Anakin.

Nevermind

It's based on all kinds of shit, honestly. Like with most hero's journey stories they can come across as borrowing from Christianity (The Matrix, Harry Potter, etc.) as their protagonists end up sacrificing themselves for everyone. Anakin was conceived by a higher power and sacrificed himself to save his son, so there's absolutely no way that isn't totally deliberate.

I think the unstable saber leads me to believe the hilts are actually releases of energy because that saber is too powerful to be controlled.

I think this could be one of a few reasons for the choice, sure.

I am looking forward to crybabies exposing themselves for what they truly are in their comments.

And I am looking forward to watching Boyega and the rest of the crew in action.

Although it's unlikely that's the case it's not impossible either. For example this shot of Blink from Days of Future Past is from the trailer. However in the movie
there are Nimrods stabbing her in this exact scene.
So there definitely is a possibility of there being additions added later but we'll just have to wait and see. :)
