Concept artists serve at the pleasure of higher powers who don't.

Speak for yourself. Higher powers don't care as long as it gets done on time. So in that time, I spend as much energy into getting things plausible as possible because fans tare this stuff apart if its not right.

ProtomanNeo explained it a bit better :P

Maybe all 3 emiters can expand to blade length?

That way you can have a light tonfa by holding it sideways

Like this?

Concept artists generally do care how their fictional designs would work.

P.S. The whole thing is clearly an homage to the claymore and other large and heavy swords. It looks more medieval than the traditional Katana inspired saber. In fact I'd wager his fighting style differs just as much as the saber design.

These two ideas don't actually compete. While concept artists don't decide what inevitably makes it in the movie, they do pour their own conception of how their designs would work into the actual product.

I think it's incredibly likely that the choice to include such a design is likely stylistic rather than functional. At the same time, any stylistic decision (like the decision to give the villain a claymore) is sure to stem from the way they intend to portray this character, which ultimately feeds back into the way we as viewers digest the story and therefore makes details like this more than simply trivial.

Haven't seen episode 1 in a long time, but was there any reason Maul had the dual bladed one?

Like, aside from it looking cool/different.

Being one of the two Sith standing against thousands if not hundreds of thousands of Jedi seems like a pretty good reason to have a weapon that can repel multiple enemy lightsabers at once.

Now that you mention it, why does every shit idea get thrusted upon us in form of impact font overlayed an image. I think there is a conspiracy in there.

Because it's simple to read? I swear some of you are getting more joy out of attacking nerds than you are from the damn trailer.

Aren't there some sort of materials that are lightsaber-resistant? I remember them being in KOTOR, maybe that's what this one is made of.

EDIT: Beaten, huh.

His fighting style relied on it.

So...because it looked cool.

Why don't all Sith have dual blades?

The EU established Maul created the double lightsaber to Surprise and Kill a Jedi Master, as his final test to becoming a Sith Lord

This new saber could use that same idea.

I can agree with all this.

I just find it ridiculous that people are making big ass images appealing to JJ to "fix" a design that will spawn many lucrative retail items (or on the other hand writing essays defending its practical viability) when he probably doesn't and won't give it a second thought.

Except Episode one clearly establishes that no one on Tatooine would recognize a jedi by their robes alone. Qui-Gon only gets made when Anakin spots his lightsaber

all it takes is one random sighting from an imperial loyalist who knows what those clothes are to report it to the entity that, you know, made it one of its primary missions to exterminate all jedi

it's dumb, just admit it

Why don't all Sith have dual blades?

How many Sith existed during the PT "two Sith, thousands of Jedi" times? 4.

Maul obviously has a dual-bladed saber.

Tyrannus was a former Jedi, and a self-styled "Count." He apparently retained his personal style, which you can see both in his saber design and his fighting style. (His saber design is really the only true "saber" in the films, which seems to be meant to stylistically complement his title.) Despite his involvement in the war, he seems to be more of a figurehead for Palpatine's schemes, and Palpatine obviously treats him as expendable.

Sidious is obviously (and justifiably) cocky and doesn't even really use a lightsaber unless directly challenged. TBH the only reason they bother to ever have him use one in the PT is for the initial shock when he fights back against Windu et al and for that duel with Yoda.

Vader basically wipes out the Jedi as his first act as a Sith. He also thinks he's the most powerful dude in the galaxy.

Why don't all Sith have dual blades?
Because a double-bladed lightsaber is incredibly difficult to actually use without cutting off your own limbs. Maul's actor was a martial artist stuntman, but Christopher Lee, Hayden Cristenson, and Ian McDermond couldn't show anywhere near the dexterity needed for a double-bladed lightsaber to look plausible.

That's bullshit. If it's what they had liked to wear Anakin would have appeared in Uniform. Why would he be wearing robes? He didn't go through a hobo phase late in life.

Wait, how does Ep 1 clearly establish that no one on Tatooine would recognize a jedi by their jobes when Qui-Gon is wearing his parka disguise the whole time he is on Tatooine? If anything it shows that Qui-Gon knew he would be recognized as a Jedi if he did wear his robes.

It's inspired by some of the original McQuarrie artwork:

Nice. I think his sketches are a bit too elegant to mesh well with what they ended up using in the OT. But it's far from a deal breaker, I was always all about that Y-Wing anyway, which I presume will not be in it since they were already considered past it in the original trilogy.

Everyone seems to have access to this magical material except poor old Maul. Seems a bit of a crutch.

I could be pulling this out my ass, but I thought I read it way back. That Phrik required a current through it which is why the Magna-Guards could wield it. But Palpatines lightsaber hilt was merely ornamental because it's considered a precious metal.

Hmm.

Maybe this new villain will have trained to use the bladed hilt.

hmm.

I feel that the cross guard is being underrated as a combat tool.

Many duels have standoffs where the two opponents are pushing against each other with their physical and force strengths. They often end up at very tight quarters when doing this. The cross guard allows for another angle of attack not present in guard less sabers.

Also the wielder can block a swing with the blade of the crossguard and still have the main emitter blade facing the opponent.

I think the idea that the 90 degree emitters can be cut off so easily neglects the force perception nature of a lightsaber duel.

Also if that tactic were viable cutting off the main emitter would be just as easy and would happen often in guard less saber duels.

Okay, I made some adjustments to my last lightsaber edit from several pages ago. What do you all think of this? Yay or nay? Again, sorry for the ghetto paint job, I don't have Photoshop.

The goat. I thought it was known the new X-Wing was based on the old concept art. I remember it being discussed here on GAF, actually. when J.J. first showed it.

I didn't know that. I think it's safe to assume most of what is "known" about this movie isn't really known.

Unless you are an economist you shouldn't believe that everyone knows everything as soon as it is possible to be known :)

Well unlike plot or character identities, this was discussed around the way. The original concept art is everywhere.

It is everywhere. I didn't know they had gone back to that for their designs however. Apologies, I guess?

Here's the thing, most "sword" fighting you see in movies and tv shows, whether in something like star wars, or medieval movies, or fantasy movies (lord of the rings, game of thrones) is bullshit. Everything is done so it looks cool. So enjoy all of this for what it is, entertainment. Even if this light saber makes little sense, it looks cool. I can't believe people are still complaining about it...

I think my problem with it are those side stubs, looks visually unappealing, if it was something like this:

It would look way better IMO
As I said before:
Looks more like flaming sword than a lightsaber. Plus, we've never seen a lightsaber blade bend this way. Then you'd have everyone bitching about that instead.
You don't have to apologize. It's not like that. I was just surprised that more people here at GAF didn't see that, already. Ralph was that dude. His concept work still shines to this day. I actually made it my goal to grab as many things based on his work as possible, like the original Starkiller stuff (statues and art), and the Hasbro toyline based on his concept art. Like the Stormtroopers with lightsabers and shields.

Maybe it was made to look primitive since there aren't any Jedis or Siths left afaik besides Luke. Maybe that guy made the light saber himself in a shed which would explain why the energy blade looks almost like a flame.

George Lucas might have created Star Wars but without him the movies would be nothing imo. Everything he drew looks awesome.
