New day, new reminder for Sony (Shawn Layden, Andrew House, Adam Boyes):

I like that banner. :)

Time to remove the shackles of conservatism and embrace the hype train. My updated predictions for the keynote:

  • [*]A turnbuckle and wrestling ropes rise from the stage, and Shu rushes towards it and reaches over with his outstretched hand. Tretton tags him in.

If it eventuates it’d only be a solid 7/10 show because no Mass Effect or Fallout.

Imagining that, made me seriously laugh out loud at work.

But at the same time, what some people need to recognise is that, in a general sense, the likes of FFVII-R, Shenmue III, Sony Crash or the re-reveal of TLG represent the hypest of the hype. They're about as top-tier in terms of video game announcements as you can get, and this is an upcoming event that, due to some apparently reliable insider info, is going to bust out quite the megaton. So in that context, whining directly to a Sony representative in the thread that this game is a waste of time, or that game isn't worth spending any money on, or don't listen to those fans because they're deluded, is just kind of inappropriate. All you're doing is being this person here...

...a horrid little party pooper.

I don't even want a FFVII remake, because the original is my favourite game and I don't believe Square Enix is in a good enough state to do justice to the original, but sitting here whining about the possibility of it appearing in the next 4 days is just outright obnoxious. I might not want it, but I realise that a lot of people do, and I respect that.
Top-tier in terms of video game announcements as you can get? Shenmue and Crash? In what universe? I get that some element of hype and megatonnage come in the context of franchise which already exist for obvious reasons, but It annoys me that we only a year into this generation and this thread seems to be dominated by wanting games that are literally older than some posters in this thread. I get it's much harder to elaborate upon your desire for games which don't exist (new IPs), but it's disconcerting when people are given free range to really request whatever nonsensical fantasy they can think of people jump to sequels, reboots, and remakes. It makes me question which party is more risk averse: publishers or consumers.

So do I! I can do so and still express my opinion though. It's a hype thread, not a circle jerk. :)

but you're not offering anything better to the discussion, youre just trying to put others opinions down.

I have no problem with people not wanting to see certain games but if you feel the need to express that then express what games you would LIKE to see instead of just being a party pooper.

I don't really want Crash or Shenmue. For personal reasons, Im not going to pretend to be some analyst and know/not know if will make money or not - esp since that has nothing to do w my enjoyment of a game anyway. I'd be happy for everyone if they get that though. I'd like FF7 but its not happening.

I'd like to see a new Wild Arms or Legend of Dragoon, any new first party JRPG would be great. Maybe include some additional content like a Vita version that transfers your party over into a dungeon crawler version of the game to acquire new stats/abilities/weapons etc.

See. is it that hard to express your opinion and still positively contribute to the discussion instead of just being negative and nothing else?? man.

edit: poster above me again just putting others opinions down and offering nothing positive to the discussion. its sad.

You requested it, so here is my poem:

Only 5 days away from our very first
Public event and the Gaf just ‘bout burst

Amazing to see many guesses and Gifs
Until 10am that day you’ll be hanging from cliffs.

The problem with Gaf and it’s vast speculation
Is that even great news brings out your frustration

One person’s favorite is another’s least fave
But we try to bring games that most gamers crave

Our goal is to have fun, share news, announce games
Meet new friends, talk games & also denounce flames

Keep an open mind while we attempt something new
Hope to see you all there where we can share a cold brew!

People seem to be missing the subtle message of this rhyme... Wait wUT

RIME

HOLY SHIITTT OMYGOD

It's a conference celebrating the last 20 years of gaming on PlayStation. These things are megatons in relation to the event.

You just answered your own question. It's hard to treat a new IP as a megaton when you've no knowledge of its existence, when all it is is a project kept away from the public and shrouded in secrecy until it's ready to show. There's no nostalgia involved, no affectionate memories of playing past installments - how are we supposed to get excited about that? On the other hand, Shenmue is a series in dire need of closure, Crash is the old-school mascot that was at his best during the PS1 days and hasn't been nearly as good since Activision bought the rights, TLG is the follow-up to two of the greatest games ever made but has gone AWOL for years and FFVII-R... well, okay, I'll give you that one. I don't think it needs to happen, but a huge amount of people do.

And there's nothing risk averse treating sequels and reboots as the major megatons when there's not exactly a dearth of new intellectual properties from Sony on the way. We've got Bloodborne, The Order: 1886, RiME, The Tomorrow Children, Until Dawn, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, Helldivers, Alienation, that rumoured Guerilla game Horizon and more on the way. They've got that part covered.

hasn't been nearly as good since Activision bought the rights

Again, this never happened. Crash has never been sold or bought. Technically, the only time his ownership has actually 'changed' was earlier this year when Activision bought themselves (and Blizzard) back out of Vivendi. Other than that, he was always owned by the same group, their name just changed through mergers and acquisitions of other groups. Sony, during the Crash 1 - Crash Bash era, was the publisher, and marketing, behind the game. I used to be involved with one of the development teams for the series post-ND on a personal level, and know a few things about the Sony/Universal relationship, but I don't know if I'm allowed to say much about that. Basically, let's just say Sony put a lot into Crash behind the scenes, obviously, and as people in this thread have stated, this has a lot to do with why they're so anal about retaining IP ownership at current day.

Activision, as a publisher, has never produced their own Crash game other than the two racing games on iOS.

Beyond Good and Evil?

In an open world where you have to unlock towers?
And blend in with pedestrians and do a shit ton of side missions....they already got 99% of the game/quest design on hand from their previous annual titles already. Just re-skin the models, textures and call it a day; the Ubisoft way!

Yeah and going by the hints that's justifiable megaton. What I'm saying is there is nothing wrong with looking at remasters and past franchises for this event when it is celebrating the past...

If this was e3 then fair enough. But it isn't!
Fair point.
On the other hand, Shenmue is a series in dire need of closure
No -- it's not. Wanting another Shenmue game is more of a joke and a meme than a cogent request.
Crash is the old-school mascot that was at his best during the PS1 days and hasn't been nearly as good since Activision bought the rights,
That's basically where it ends for me.
TLG is the follow-up to two of the greatest games ever made but has gone AWOL for years and FFVII-R... well, okay, I'll give you that one. I don't think it needs to happen, but a huge amount of people do.
Wanting TLG is perfectly fine.

No doubt. But again. We just hit a year. The best available games are ports of two games that came out last year. Sure we're getting Rime and Bloodborne, but we've also already gotten another Infamous and Killzone. I still think wanting more new IPs should dominate most discussions.

All you guys fail to see the obvious hidden message here.

You take the first letters from each line, and you end up with

OP AUT IO BOMKH, which is similar kind of non-language that they spoke in ICO. So this absolutely must mean that The Last Guardian has been renamed, and now we know its new name.

THE LAST GUARDIAN CONFIRMED!

That Boyes poem has chilled my hype.

We're not getting Final Fantasy VII.

We're not getting Crash 4.

We're not getting Shenmue 3.

I think the big 3rd party exclusive is going to be the new Silent Hill game. Which kind of fits because Silent Hill started on Playstation.

Bloody hell, the fun police just showed. Its an event celebrating 20 years in the game. I would be disappointed if nostalgia goggles weren't on and revival IP wasnt mentioned.

DAMN! I gotta say, the hype levels for this thing are getting pretty damn high up into the stratosphere.

It seems like as if some people are expecting E3 in December.

Is this show REALLY going to approach that level? Me thinks this all has been blown out of proportion.

Has anything been officially confirmed or is this all conjecture?

Nostalgia goggles and revival IP confirmed!!!

Now how about a bedtime rhyme to put me to sleep? Pretty please?

first time posting in this thread and I have one question...

is there actually a chance that The Last Guardian will be shown?

Nobody knows, except a few insiders and industry folk, but thankfully they're not giving away anything. I think fans speculating and getting hyped is fun, but some people have been going "ooh I know something you don't maybe if you're lucky I'll give you a hint!" and I personally dislike that.

I don't think Sony will show TLG again until it's almost finished and they can give a firm launch window. But that being said, this 20th anniversary of PlayStation would be the perfect time to re-announce it, if it's ready.

Celebrating 20 years or having nostalgia goggles doesn't somehow make Shenmue 3 a good idea. I grew up with Crash. I have incredibly fond memories of playing that game with my friends and family. But I could give a shit about a new Crash game. Fun police or not.

New IP discussion isn't going to dominate in a thread like this, where rumours of something that's been requested for years actually turning up are circling heavily. That's what gets people excited the most, unsurprisingly. And at the same time, we can all appreciate the fact that Sony are plugging new things at a consistent rate.

Yeah really. God almighty, some people can be real sourpusses.
