CM Punk tells all about walking out of WWE (podcast)

Flair/Steamboat is a good suggestion as well. I don't think War Games or TLC matches are good for someone who hasn't watched wrestling. WG are usually just bloody brawls with little story, and TLC matches are stunt shows. Something like Steamboat/Flair or especially Rude/Steamboat Iron Man match will teach someone how things work. How the heel/face interactions work. How selling works. How general psychology works. How timing works.

I feel like Steamboat/Rude is an excellent teaching kind of match. Someone completely alien to wrestling could watch that and understand how everything works. In a lot of ways I think Macho/Warrior at WM7 can also do that, but I feel like you need to understand the characters at least a little bit before seeing that match. You don't at all with Steamboat/Rude. Everything you need to know about those characters are explained within the match. Everything you need to know about what makes a heel a heel and what makes a face a face is explained in that match.

After all of the wrestling talk on the Bombcast and now this thread popping up, I almost want to watch wrestling for the first time in my life at the age of 30. I keep reading wikipedia articles about Hulk Hogan and I don't know why, because I never had any interest in this stuff before.

This may be a little too niche but you also may love it, but check this match out:

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2a23dm_prince-devitt-vs-kota-ibushi_sport

It's from Wrestle Kingdom 8 and is Prince Devitt's last match in Japan before coming to WWE - against Kota Ibushi, one of the most talented high flyers in Japan, and a goddamn good looking man as well. It's a fantastic match.

People don't need to know any of that. They just have to be entertained. Gimmick shit like TLC or MITB are good for first looks.

I think the first wrestling match anyone should see is Mankind vs Undertaker Hell in a Cell because that's crazy memorable to anyone watching for the first time.

I agree with Liu Kang bakes a pie. I think if you want to show someone a first match, you should show something that will make them go "Holy shit" and freak out the whole time. Something that would leave a big impression. Like Hell in a Cell 1998. Or a TLC. Or RVD vs Lynn.

Compares him with Austin? WTF! Austin is a freaking legend. There is no comparison. One is one of the greatest wrestlers of all time who changed the industry while the other is just a mediocre wrestler with mic skills no one would have given a shit about in the attitude era. Was Vince high when he compared Punk with Austin?

I love how people believe this nonsense

People loved Road Dogg and he was garbage outside of his New Age Outlaws intro. You also can't compare today's wrestlers with back then. They weren't creatively shackled because whatever helped them get over WCW was fair game.

idk why everyone thinks people in the AE were all Rock/Austin tier. they weren't. there were a lot of mediocre people.

Also Bam Bam Bigelowe vs Lawrence Taylor is a must watch.

LT had Salt and Pepa play him out

I think it might be a little too MUCH for the first time. Like, if you set the bar so high off the bat with a big moment like that, it kinda numbs you to everything else? I don't know what I'm trying to say here, honestly... I guess like.. don't crank it up to 11, you gotta adjust slowly, so you can truly take in how special and crazy that Hell in a Cell match is. I mean, for most of us, we've seen it and heard the sound bytes too many times to count, but if that's someone's first match, it's kinda nuts. D:

if punk ever heard the vince interview, you think he buys the story that vince is saying the wedding thing was a coincidence?

I'm not sure CM Punk ever thought that Vince asked for that to happen. Just that the WWE is such a fucked up business that someone there made the decision to give him his papers on his wedding day to spite him.

We're not old, DM!!! I'm making the most out of this one month of WWE Network. I'm watching Wrestlemania 5 again and pretending to be a kid. I'm gonna hook up the NES and find some Pop Rocks on Amazon.

When's WWE Network going to offer this? They mentioned they would carry it at some point I think.

My uncle works for Nintendo, he says Super Mario Bros 4 is coming out next year.

Man the Rockers against the Twin Towers are up next. Wonder when the WWF is going to let Marty ditch this Sean Micheals guy and give him a proper solo push.

Road Dogg was a solid in ring guy. Even as the Roadie. He certainly wasn't great, but he could do what was ask of him against just about anyone. He was for sure a better singles guy than Billy Gunn ever was.

A black guy, with chains around his neck... subtle.

To be fair to Vince McMahon, who has done a TON of racist as shit angles and gimmicks in the past 30 years, JYD and his chains were an established thing before Vince hired him. In fact, JYD was past his prime by the time he made it to the WWF. Blame Bill Watts and JYD himself for that.

I don't know if it's the writers or the wrestlers, but the only person I've seen that isn't disgraceful on the mic is Paul Heyman. All the things I've seen in the last few weeks ( I haven't watched a full WWE show since 2006) are awkward and not funny. And man, the commentary is absolutely terrible, surprisingly due to JBL.

I've never seen a CM Punk match but I heard his whole interview...

I have to watch a match of Punks on YouTube to verify, because Austin was one of the best of all time and was captivating nearly every moment he was on tv from 1997 on... Comparing Punk to him seems like an insult to me

Great ones to start in regards to Punk matches off the top of my head.

Dat reaction at MITB :o

Plus when it comes to JYD, and a lot of you may not remember or were around for actual junkyards' heydays in the 70s and 80s, most of them had a mean-ass dog chained up. If a junkyard dog comes for you, your ass is DESTROYED.

No doubt. If you hated someone that be like....something you'd wanna do.

Sounds like what happened was Triple H wanted to talk business with Punk (hence the text message) but since Punk told him he'll talk to him after his honeymoon (in the meantime paying him his royalties) Triple H became angry for whatever reason and thought it'd be a good idea to fire him on his wedding day.

Triple H is bad for business.

I'm thinking Punk didn't shake Triple H's hand day 1 and that was pretty much that. Shit list for life. CM is an ass but you can still make ton of money with that flabby fuck. Oh well, I guess Trips thinks he can still make up that lost revenue elsewhere.

could someone PM me a link to an archived video or audio of the Steve Austin Podcast? id really like to see it after reading the recap this morning.

CM Punk is exactly the guy Triple H would hate. He's a guy that talks back to him when he does something that doesn't make sense.

Triple H doesn't seem like the kind of guy that likes to get called out by anyone outside of the handful in his inner circle.

One of the absolute best is CM Punk vs Brock Lesnar. The pop during that match was absolutely insane!! Everyone loved both wrestlers and it would have never happened if it weren't for both wrestlers having incredible chemistry together. I LOVED IT! Definitely a legit awesome match that more than proves Punk's worth in the WWE and beyond:
