Final Fantasy VII Announced For PS4

(That said, some fans HAVE been rebuilding a version of FF7's engine that reads assets & info from the original disc to make it work on newer hardware: http://q-gears.sourceforge.net/)

This is pretty much how I always imagined the remake; people finding a way to work with higher-res assets.

Things might be 'lost', but I`m sure that if you find a way to get the engine working you`ll just have to start up a Kickstarter and people would gladly put down their money to have all the art redone. You don't need big renderfarms to push out those backgrounds. Everything is already there. You just need to copy and improve it. Biggest issue would be the CGI; but I guess that can be remade with some dedication.

Isn't it more down to the fact that people's ridiculous expectations aren't met in wanting remasters/remakes? An FF7 remake will never happen, it doesn't need to happen personally, I'd rather SE concentrate on their new titles/FF games.

FF7 is a classic and is perfectly playable in its current form. Yes it has aged, but so have most games from that era.

I think a remake for SE is not worth the investment, otherwise it would of happened a while back.

I don't care about an FF7 remake. I was talking more about the grand way they presented the whole thing. Like others have said, we wouldn't be pissed if this was just a post on a blog, but the huge fanfare for a fucking PC port of a 17 year old game near the closing time of a major keynote was messed up.

this is pretty much why people are so mad. No one expected a ff7 related announcement, and then they seriously hyped up this port of the pc version to ps4 :/

Now that I think about it, it probably cost Square more money to fly Hashimoto out to America, stitch together a trailer, and coordinate and plan that troll of a presentation than it did to port the Steam version of FFVII to PS4.

This is why I'm frustrated. It was presented like something big was coming, and it disappointed a lot of people.

I'm sorry for the offtopic but can you guys tell me if this character is from Final Fantasy?

You can see it's 2 eyes, nose and mouth.

I haven't played the Steam port, but other than achievements, what does it offer over the PSone version that's been available forever? Are the battles at least rendered in more than 15 FPS now?

You know, now that I think about it, maybe a REmake-like makeover would be good enough, too. Re-render the backgrounds (imagine Visual Works doing them!), new realistically-proportioned character models, full-directional controls instead of 4-way (you could comfortably play it on iOS/Android this way, like Chaos Rings proves, which makes the investment more attractive for SE) and you're basically done.
Way less work and costs than a FFXV-like remake, though still no easy peasy effort as they practically would have to build everything from ground up with a new engine (not too complex for this kind of game with 2D-movement only and simple animations).

It really wouldn't be impossible and I can't imagine it being more work than FFX/X-2 HD, where they basically had to re-do/touch-up every single texture/model and all of the 3D environment for TWO big games, too, which must have been more work than a few fixed-camera backgrounds and models. They out-sourced that to Virtuos Games for FFX/X-2 HD, and they could do that again for FFVIIR, so it wouldn't take away resources from any of their main FF-teams.

On the other hand, who am I kidding, a full-blown remake with FFXV production values would obviously be more exciting and hype-inducing :D

FMV's are better quality, image quality overall is a bit better (smoother fonts, resolution, animations look better) but otherwise it's pretty much the same.

Someone has made a patch for the battle FPS, haven't tested it yet:

I love ff7. I still play it on my vita.

If this was a remake that had effort put in to it with improved graphics and maybe more side quests I would've jumped for a ps4. I was hyped when I saw this thread but it was a troll. I will stick to my vita, but this has been a poorly thought out reveal from Sony.

20th anniversary of olaystation. They should be treating these games with more respect as there will be many who were not even old enough or born to enjoy these games.

Redeem yourselves... Wip3out collection, and I'll jump..

Yep.

An RE-make style remake is literally all it would have taken.

Would have sold bucketloads as well.

This is all so weird.

I can actually kind of see why they thought it would be a good idea.

"Our fans love FF7, they'd love it if they could relive the experience on PS4!" - Sounds great on paper, in reality...not so much, especially not with an announcement like that.

I wonder what their real internal thoughts are currently on a remake, if the genuine internal reason is money, worry, or lack of motivation.

I wonder if the higher ups even get told about the mass negative reactions to this or they are oblivious to it, which wouldn't surprise me at all.

I still think they should first remake 9 since it's the one without ports on a million platforms, to test the waters of cost, development and reaction, or even 8.

This was already covered and discussed several hundred posts ago, but a REmake style remake is actually quite costly for Square because they no longer have the original assets for FF7.

The difference between development for FF10/10-2 HD and a REmake of FF7 is that 10/10-2 were primarily 3D. While textures required some work to get it to HD standard, that amount of work pales in comparison to building and rerendering all of the 2D backgrounds of FF7, on top of building new character and monster models and texturing and animating them, as well as essentially making a new overworld map. That is not counting the work they will have to put into sound, music, and the money that will have to go into making new HD CGI cutscenes. In no way is it just "a few fixed-camera backgrounds and models". At this point, they might as well make a new game.

Moreover, the backgrounds of 7 were created with the proportions of the stumpy field character model in mind; if they were to make a realistically proportioned Cloud, the backgrounds would have to be adjusted for a new character size from the references that they could rip from the game disc (assets that can at best only be references, because 640x480 cannot simply go through magic software and come out looking gorgeous in 1080p).

So even if people have been reduced to the bargaining state ("We don't really want a full blown modern game version anymore, just give us something with spruced up graphics"), it's still not that financially appealing to SE. They're better off investing their money into new games.

A direct 1-1 port of the PC version would be sad at this point... they should make it full aspect ratio, fill in art gaps where needed perhaps, apply a good filter to the art to make it less pixilated but also acceptable, give it a clean score (I remember the PC version score was crap compared to PSX), etc.

See, I understand everything that you're saying, but you seem to miss one pretty important fact.

I really want it.

It's amazing that they feel trolling us like this is cool lol.

They act like they couldn't just remake it with some updated graphics. Doesn't have to be ff15 quality.

The live reaction of me and a friend from when we thought we were getting it to the bitter realisation!

I even joked about FFVII remake literally 10 seconds before Sony said "Our next guest is Square Enix", too

Watching this unfold live was truly legendary. I kept watching the video thinking the cutscenes were going to morph into 'next-gen' any second, then the crashing realization they are simply talking about the PC port. Man... and the reactions on Twitch and NeoGAF, holy shit.

The more i think about this whole thing, the more i realize, its not even that i was expecting a remake, i wasn't at this point, how many years later, i had actually figured it wasn't ever coming, but it was the way they set up that reveal on stage, that truly makes me angry (and i'm not one to get angry over video games very often) but that just felt like they did it to be assholes, and i hope they realized how bad that made them look

Yeah, the whole thing was planned so poorly. Forget the expectations of the people watching online for a minute. When Hashimoto said "17 long years ago" and the FFVII logo appeared on the screen, the audience went absolutely crazy. They weren't going crazy because they all thought we were getting a PC port. They were all thinking the remake was about to be shown.

I just realized the more offensive / hilarious part here is they never bothered to have it on Vita too. Get fucked with Ifrit's flaming horn.

The PS1 version is already available on Vita, and is no doubt cheaper than what they'll expect people to pay for the PS4 release. Sure, the PS1 version isn't running in a high resolution - but with a portable device like the PS Vita with a small screen, how high def do you need it?

See, I figured these companies out. They are done with us as customers. If they really wanted to give respect to these titles you would see proper effort.

They are eating at the best restaurants & buying houses for their families. They don't care about these things.

It's why I stopped buying games and consoles.

So...a port of the PC game is going to take months to get on the system? Just port the PS1 version and call it a day.

Yeah I think the final kick in the groin is not only is it simply the PC port but they gave a nebulous "Spring 2015" release date as if that's something we should be looking forward to. lol

Huge missed opportunity by those at the show. Was it mostly press for that presentation? Maybe there was more of a reaction, because watching the stream it seemed like they cut a lot of the noise out.

I seriously never thought I would ever see a remake, but I am certain the Square today as absolutely no desire to. I don't buy that it would be too difficult, take too much time or too many people. It's such a cop out answer. Other studios have shown that when it is too difficult to follow up a big game with new technology what you do is sell it in smaller pieces for full price over a long span of time.

Also, this is pretty much how I see PS1 support happening on the PS4. Small numbers of headliner games sold at a higher price tag.

People are still giving out about this?

I was annoyed for about 10 minutes but I got over it.

I am sure there will be more information on the port at Jump Festa.

I will be buying it anyway.
