Say goodbye to your little amiibo friends........

After the November 21 launch of Amiibo, Nintendo’s line of Skylanders-style interactive figurines that connect to Wii U games including Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart 8, would-be buyers started to notice that supply of some of the figurines dried up fast at retail outlets and online, and didn’t seem to reappear.

Today, Nintendo confirmed to WIRED that this was deliberate, and the company does not plan to ship any more of several of the Amiibo figurines after the “initial shipment.”

“We will aim for certain amiibo to always be available. These will be for our most popular characters like Mario and Link. Due to shelf space constraints, other figures likely will not return to the market once they have sold through their initial shipment,” read the full statement.

Fucking sucks if true!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm going nuts with all of this back and forth shit, what's really going on ?!?!?!?!?

I await further statement regarding Gamecube controller adaptor.

Reminder: Iwata said it months ago that some of the Amiibos would be limited.

Then they need to announce which are limited runs BEFORE they go on sale, not quietly admit to news outlets that these were extremely limited a week after they're out of stock almost everywhere.

I swear this is becoming all the more confusing.
So they are confirming that some figures are being discontinued while others are not?
I heard so much conflicting information about this.

That's never how it's worked for toys, and those are toys.

Limited sure but sold out well before release and retail not getting any and you say "oh noes discontinued" is a bit sudden don't you think?

It also seems rather stupid as the only people who win are scalpers, not Nintendo...

Edit: On another hand it is good their in-game functionality is not that great. I worry for parents who have had Christmas ruined by having to pay well over the odds for the Kaos Trap Skylanders Trap Team figure.

Definitely. This whole situation sucks for people that couldn't get the limited Amiibos.

I don't see why they don't just release more of them, Nintendo wins either way. Worst case scalpers buy them and Nintendo gets money and the demand increases. Best case, people actually get what they want, but that's unlikely.

No freaking way! How does this help Nintendo at all for doing this if this is real. I really really don't believe it though.
It pushes the value of particular amiibo up and therefore more desirable to consumers who wouldn't otherwise want them. Nintendo is essentially telling everyone to buy or miss out.

I expect/hope it mainly has to do with supply and demand, IE Mario and Link are obvious shoe-ins to constantly be available, but others are wait-and-see. They'd get made and sold, and if it took awhile to clear out inventory then that's that, but if demand turns out to be high then they'll keep making them or at least bring them out interminently. And so if ALL amiibos are doing great period I can see most if not all sticking around afterall.

It doesn't work like that.

Now you'll buy all the next amiibos day one because you got the message.

I got my Villager Amiibo, all I need now is a Wind Waker Link. Hope I still can get one (for a standard price).

I hope they know what they're doing because I don't want to miss out on special features because some Amiibo is no longer available.

But other than that, whatever. They don't even look that great anyway and I was not impressed by their role in Smash.

Toon Link is not even out yet is it?

Good thing I don't like the ones they're cancelling. I got Mario, DK, Link, Fox and Samus. Plan on getting Kirby, Yoshi, Pikachu, Sonic, and Lucina.

Pre order the ones you want. Ike, being less popular than Marth, should be almost impossible to find

Yep, don't think anyone wanted wft nor Marth till the shortages, now everyone does. Amazon got new Marth shipment today and sold out instantly

So it helps resellers, not Nintendo.
It helps Nintendo as they're releasing amiibo in waves. By making a stand during wave 1, they've essentially told people to buy or miss out. That may translate to higher preorder numbers for amiibo in later waves and almost guaranteed sales of any 'rare' amiibo stocked by stores.

Nintendo stuff is always limited. Anyone surprised by this or the gamecube adapter has not been paying attention to Nintendo for very long. They have always been this way. The gamecube component adapter springs to mind.
