Fighting Games Weekly | Dec 8-14 | Sony pleads the FiF

Just had an idea about the mechanics in SF5. What if you could hit MP+MK to gain 1 bar of meter for an EX move, and all it would cost you is $1 on your credit card.

Top player treatment. Eating into TO revenue. Wouldn't fly. Maybe if it was 50c

You can clearly see in the video Ryu's fireball starts hitting multiple times after the "power-up". Each aditional hit costs 50 cents

"I've spent 50 bucks but I FINALLY beat that fucking Blanka, totally worth it"

Better hope your Hyper Turbo Super combo doesn't whiff too. That's $10 a pop, and then another $10 to see the cinematic on hit.

What's shocking is that 31% of US has worse Internet than this.
It's not shocking.

I'd tell you how much we pay for this, but I've embarrassed myself enough.
I paid about $75/month for about that much at my previous residence.

It's amazing living in a metro area where a couple ISPs actually have to compete with each other.

So it turns out what Examu's been working on recently is... Nitroplus Blasters: Heroine Infinite Duel. Just what everyone here wanted, another 2D waifu fighter, with all of these being from Nitro+ games. They already have Sonico and Saber in the game already, so they're probably going to print money unless the game is complete ass.

RIP anyone trying to make a fighting game with original characters.

That's sort of Google's plan with Google Fiber. They don't necessarily want to make it a business, just introducing competition into the American market to increase the general level of service in local areas.

Cable company collusion has hurt the US FGC way more than top player collusion ever did, I guess.

The problem is some states have their legislatures bribed enough by the telcos that it makes it difficult for Google to even get in those areas.

My only hope for decent internet here is the local telco expanding fast enough, and I"m in a city of 300k people.

Raleigh's going to get Google though so good for them.

Damn all of you with your bellow 10ms ping, ughhhhhh. It's probably not even my router or wiring but just the stupid cable infrastructure in this country.

That Rivals of Aether thread had a small conversation topic that has always been interesting but I never see anyone talk about it enough. How come Street Fighter exists as the genre king of traditional (for the sake of this discussion traditional = "lifebar depletion") fighters and smaller or more alternative games a la Guilty Gear, King of Fighters, Mortal Kombat, Killer Instinct, et al. still find large or devoted followings, but Smash as the genre king for the "platformer fighter" (basically, Smash's entire emphasis on staying on stage while forcing others off and dynamics involving stage design and interaction) doesn't have any alternate takes period, never mind alternate takes that are successful?

Is it really just about people feeling they have to twist the basics of the design just enough so that they're more originul™/don't appear as straight up derivatives of the game play style or is it just fear that you have to directly compete with the Galactus in the room that is "every character you probably grew up playing at some point in the last 30 years from Nintendo vs. themselves" as just John Doe Entertainment? I personally feel like there's a niche that can be capitalized on as long as a dev team makes an attempt that focuses on the strengths of the design while creating a strong visual identity for themselves.

You can't drop a bunch of names that have been around for 10-20+ years and have multiple sequels, and then be surprised they that have followings.

As for Smash, it does have alternative takes. There were the two Jump games and the Sony game. There's an indie furry game that's set to come out next year, and there was another steampunk indie game that didn't make its crowdfunding goal, but still had some progress when it was revealed.

I think the first thing to understand is the environment these games are being created in. A lot of the SF "clones" were made back when SF2 was insanely popular, or back when game budgets were a lot smaller. SG's budget probably shits all over the first GG's simply because of when it was made, despite them both being from teams of a similar size. Making a game now can be really risky for those invested, so why chase a small niche like fighters when that same amount of money could get a much higher ROI from a shooter?

But even then, we see the platform fighter establishing itself as a legit genre with other games. So the second thing to do is actually understand the games being made. There aren't that many, and the ones that exist have massive problems. The indie ones aren't out yet, so we can't really talk about those. The two Jump ones, both on handhelds, both Japanese exclusive. It's no wonder they didn't take off. Sony's entry. Shit. It tried to be a platform fighter without being a platform fighter, and failed. If the game had reproduced Smash's gameplay more faithfully, we might be talking about a PS4 sequel right now.

Another thing to consider is that Project M exists. For all intents and purposes, this is another game in the genre. The people behind this could have been another indie game trying to make it, but they aren't. And that's worked out great for those that wanted another platform fighter to play.

Really, I don't feel any of your questions are legitimate. Alternatives exist, it's just that they're either bad or too small to realistically compete with a series that's been around for 15+ years.

As much as GB is deep in The Struggle™ with those DL/UL numbers, I'm totally jealous of that ping.

I would trade mine for it if that ping were there 100% of the time.

I think it's cool that licensed fighters aren't as dead as they probably should be. I'm forever saddened that they'll probably never be a Binbougami fighting game.

What's the point of the ping measurement on those things anyway? It's not like it can be used as an indicator for your connection to literally anyone else.

It gives you a rough estimiate of the distance at the bottom. It also shows you that you don't have any routing issues or odd overhead on the outgoing signal.

They have half my ping at probably at least tripple the distance.

Under Night In Birth
Chaos Code before that.

BlazBlue came after Battle Fantasia too.

lol UNIEL

I should retroactively edit my question to define non-indie better, I meant to exclude companies like LabZero or French Bread and refer more to companies with larger resources who can choose more freely between creation of new properties or iterating/licensing known/profitable properties (I thought French Bread was essentially a doujin soft group, but honestly I don't know much about them so).

So I guess the answer is ArcSys, and 6 years. It's funny that I think of BlazBlue as being older than it is. Last gen was so long, lol. Though it's interesting that ArcSys was essentially forced into that position because of Guilty Gear, right?

Rise of the Incarnates?

Speaking of that.. what's going on with all these:

Code:
Q4 Arcana Heart 3: LOVE MAX!!!!! (EU)
Q4 BLADE ARCUS from Shining
Q4 Rise of Incarnates
Q4 Skullgirls Encore
Q4 Yatagarasu: Attack on Cataclysm
WINTER The King of Fighters 2002 Unlimited Match

Love Max EU is already out, and I think skullgirls ps4 is delayed?

EDIT: I didn't actually know till I looked on amazon that Love Max was out 21st of last month though.

Not what I expected to hear from Examu.

I guess Saber's in is nice, but that's it for me. Kinda hate Super Sonico though, personally.

Skullgirls PS4/Vita got delayed to early 2015. Blade Arcus came out in arcades already a couple of weeks ago. Not sure if there's a console release planned.

Mixup Night stream had Haitani, Dogura, and Woshige doing netplay Xrd. Almost every match was 4-5F delay .

I remember people mentioning that's the average they were getting, but it's disappointing actually seeing it.

I am excited about this. Saber! I'm sure they'll have some more interesting characters.

Though Examu is incompetent so EU console will never happen, and even if it will i'm sure it'll be region locked servers again.

I knew it existed, its just that I was able to see it and it was a partial exclusive.

And to be honest it had been so long I had forgotten about it in away, nice surprise to wake up to during the semester final blitz.
