Elite: Dangerous Standard Beta (Starting Jul 29th - $75)

400 billion stars is not really a gimmick at all in the context of Elite. The reason is that they've mapped the Milky Way galaxy (which has approx. 400 billion stars..), locations and all, the stars you see in the night sky is exactly how they are in the game. So if we want to have a certain authenticity it wouldn't make sense to not include all of them.

Someone could say authenticity for authenticity's sake IS a gimmick. The game doesn't play any better because it has 400 billion stars instead of just 1 billion.

Where did you sold it? How do you know where to get the most profit of it?
I can't answer for him but check out this graph:
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=66538.

If it works like that for all rare commodities it would seem like the price climbs faster as you get far enough from the source and then eventually slows down as you approach a roof price. So basically you'd take your rare cargo and start jumping, checking stations here and there to see how far into the price curve you've gone (and deciding if its worth the risk/time to go even further).

I'm surprised FD took so long to realize that rare commodities profits should be nerfed, or at least the availability on those stations. I'm making 15k profit per ton with a Lakon-6 with 100 cargo, so 1.5m per trip and it doesn't take more than 30 minutes. I suppose some people might be well above a billion now in the bank if they managed to stay awake grinding this way.

Damn it. And I started to do stupid things because I thought everything will be wiped :/

I'm unfriendly for the Federation. How do I get rid of my rep?

I'm in trouble with the federation too and I don't know how to increase the reputation.
Maybe we need only to jump in an empire sector. :P

Mmm tasty tasty profits

How does this work? Are they actually sold at specific stations?

Rare goods are specific to 1 system. Eranian Whiskey and Lavian Brandy are 2 such goods. Those systems are also almost 160 LY apart, so you maximize the profits from them as per the graph posted earlier.

Ok? So have many do they have to remove until it stops being a gimmick? Would it feel more authentic and playable to you if it had 13 stars? The game uses procedural generation, 400 billion isn't that much in that context. They could've put in a few quintillion stars and planets if gimmick was all Braben cared about. But we know that's not how he operates. The original Elite game from 1984 was supposed to have 282 trillion galaxies, but they chose to use only a few galaxies to not overwhelm the player. So bringing up the word "gimmick" in a Elite Dangerous thread is a bit weird. And if you had played E:D you would know the Milky Way doesn't feel like a gimmick, it feels pretty much how it should feel.

New launcher available, note that there is Single Player Combat Training [Maybe this will be the public demo?] and Elite: Dangerous, the game itself.

After all, it's really cool.

Any player near VEGA / ALTAIR willing to do some duo bounty hunting ?
Found a nice anarchy system with cluster belts where groups of 2 or 3 NPCs mine and gang around there, with a station not too far away. Could make for nice profit / fun action :)

System is V1581 CYGNI.

I didn't see anyone post this, here's a interview with Braben (3 days ago):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5BdtK-ZdHI#t=12

Although if you're into E:D there's not much news here. He talks about VR support, 16K support, offline mode, plus more.

Got the link from this article:

Only around 20k stars actually exist, the rest are procedurally generated and empty. So yes, it's definitely a gimmick.

So if they instead made a Milky Way with 0.000005 percent (20k of 400 billion) of the number of stars it actually contains, the game would be less gimmicky? Sorry, that doesn't make any sense whatsoever. That's like recreating New York city in GTA using 0.045th of a building (0.000005 of 900k).

Around 160k star systems are mapped from astronomical data btw, not 20k, don't know where you got that from.

Weirdly, i've started to see green coloured ships on the scanner while SC

As you trade and do missions for a faction their attitude towards you change. When you're green it means they're friendly.

Not entirely sure what benefits there are to being friendly, maybe better prices or something?

Switched to extended mod + nvidia DSR with my DK2, definitly help with text, and there game is far more fluide than with direct mod; but on the other hand it seems to cause big problem with colors, at least the black. Need to spend some time on it to see what can be done about that... hope some improvement about the dk2 support is coming soon ( thought I guess that close to release they have other priorities ).
Curved menu screen ( station, option ) and more room for the side menu would be more than welcome. UI personalisation could be a huge help too ( size, or at least color, orange on orange doesn't help the lack of resolution to read the text )

Also just logged out after a bug ( said I was loitering the docking bay I was leaving, even after I boosted very far from it, not only did that make me have a bounty on my head, and get attacked ( almost killed had to flee and repair ), but also miss my current mission. So since I had just spend my money a things for my mauler, I have about 3000 credit left, avoub 500 to spend to repair, 500 for my bounty in that system; and 4300 for the federation ( I guess because of the mission it made miss ). That... suck; guess I won't try mining tomorow...

Where can you pay those fine ? do you need to go at a station in the system you have your bounty to clear it ? won't they just shoot me again ?

Oh weird, I figured that was the case and then one the buggers tried to interdict me :D

Yesterday, engage a Cobra (!) with my starter Sidewinder... take him down to 2-3% then Another player swoops in and take the kill and get a 75k bounty :(

I had that with an ASP, took him down to 1% and didn't make the last shot :(

They have to change something about that. The kill for 10% of the bounty and the rest for the damage you did.

Yes, a percentage of how much damage you have done would be enough imo. Even a bonus for the person first enaging as well maybe.

Speaking of fighting, other than getting intercepted. Is there any way to have fight without risking your reputation with a faction ?

Isn't there simple "quest/missions" ( even for noob with a shity ship ) about killing a random npc at a specific location with a bounty or whatever ?

Is Gamma (no-data-wipe) release out?

There will not be any more wipes. The game is essentially live and online for the beta / gamma players. Mercenary Edition guys still have to wait until the 16th.

Hrm. Did I screw up? I logged in for the first time in a while, updated launcher and such and noticed I only had 100 credits. I figured this was my "old save" so I deleted and started fresh since I am going to play Open play from here on out for the most part. I then had a 1000CR and my ship was default.

I didn't "delete" my FReagle did I? I am not sure where to find it. Also, there was no 'garage' implemented right, it's all just 1 ship at this point? I can't remember if there was a way to do that.

EDIT: Any quick graphs/guides that explain all the icons? I swear I've spent more time showing people the game in the DK2 and setting up my HOTAS than I have playing!

You should see an icon on the galaxy map if you have another ship parked somewhere.

Dock with a station, go to the shipyard, you'll see your Eagle in the stored ships tab and it'll tell you where it's docked.

Is this definitely official? I've been holding off waiting for this moment to play.

Yes, they have a thread at the forums from the developers.

Hell yes! I can't wait to jump into this again.

I'm hearing they figured out how to get direct mode working with the DK2 and it's much less juddery? Is this true as well?

Stated by multiple FDev officials, so yeah it's as official as the game having an offline mode. Oh, wait......

:D

In my experience extended is actually better than direct mode when it comes to Elite dangerous atm.

I also think it's still not advised to go to DK2 0.4.4 since elite is still using 0.4.3.

edit : and about my quote I found the answer ( didn't try it yet ) https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=70736 direct mode does seems to introduce more judder to the game, and for some people ( me included ) some problem with the black ( apparently because of a weird issue with low persistence ) which you apparently can fixe. Hope direct mode will be fixed soon, it's far more user friendly and also allow mirroring.

Cool, thanks!

On that note, ran a mission for the first time, got interdicted twice but got away. Kind of related to my first question, but how can you tell if the person interdicting you is human or not? From the dialogue they are either role playing, or NPC lol.

Player's will have a CMDR prefix to their names.

Great news that there's no wipe, I messed around with the Gamma when it was released, but I was stuck in the arse-end of the Galaxy. This weekend I'm going to start fresh with 100 credits, because it's Elite.

Is there any way to plot travel with multiple jumps? When I was playing the gamma I wanted to go to Lave, but it was a *long* way away, so I just gave up trying to figure out the galaxy map
